Instagram fixes sound issue that hindered TikTok exports
Instagram has fixed a recent bug that removed the sound from Reels video clips that were downloaded from the editing screen. The bug impacted iOS users and was detrimental to creators who use Reels as a filming tool and then export to other platforms, like TikTok.
After The Verge published a story about the issue, Seine Kim, a spokesperson for Instagram’s parent company, Meta, reached out to say the change wasn’t intentional and would be fixed. Kim said today that the issue was fixed in an update to Instagram released on Friday.
The issue appears to be resolved on my own iPhone. In a test this afternoon, I was able to download a clip from the Instagram Reels, complete with sound, the same as I could before the bug. This fix will help…
Apple’s Boot Camp Gains Precision Touchpad Driver Update and Bug Fixes
This is the second Boot Camp update that Apple has pushed out in the last week, with Boot Camp 6.1.16 released on August 22. That update introduced WiFi WPA3 support and fixed a Bluetooth driver issue that could occur when resuming from sleep or hibernation.
Boot Camp users can navigate to the Start menu in Windows and open the Apple Software Update app to install the new Boot Camp drivers.
Boot Camp is a feature that is only available on older Intel-based Macs. It is not compatible with Apple silicon Macs, and these machines are not able to run Windows without virtualization software.

Zoom fixes security flaw that let attackers hijack your Mac
Zoom users with Macs can rest a little easier. Ars Technicareports Zoom has updated its Mac software to patch a vulnerability that let would-be intruders take control of systems. The video calling software’s auto-updater software not only had root-level access, but had a signature verification system that you could fool simply by giving your package a familiar file name. A hacker could force your app to downgrade or otherwise enable exploits.
Objective-See Foundation (OSF) creator and researcher Patrick Wardle first discovered the security hole, and disclosed it to Zoom in December last year. Zoom fixed that problem, but introduced another bug in the process. Zoom addressed that, too, but Wardle found still another flaw. The OSF founder discussed his findings at Def-Con last week. Zoom acknowledged the issue that day, and patched it afterward.
This isn’t the first time Zoom has grappled with security headaches, including for the Mac. In 2019, the company raced to fix a webcam hijack exploit that relied on a locally-created web server. Increased scrutiny of Zoom at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 also prompted a full-scale review of the company’s practices. While that did lead to changes, it’s clear Zoom isn’t immune to missteps.
Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 151 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements
Safari Technology Preview release 151 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web Inspector, WebDriver, CSS, Rendering, Media, JavaScript, Web API, Web Components, Accessibility, Lockdown Mode, and Web Extensions.
The current Safari Technology Preview release is built on the Safari 16 update and it includes support for feature coming in macOS Ventura such as Live Text, Passkeys, Web Extension improvements, and more.
The new build of Safari Technology Preview is compatible with machines running macOS 13 Ventura, unlike prior versions of Safari Technology Preview, but it no longer works with macOS Big Sur.
The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.
Apple’s aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.
