Hundreds of Amazon workers will go on strike, Britain’s GMB union said Friday, marking a first for the company’s employees in the U.K. Employees at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse in central England voted Friday to go on strike, with the walkout likely to happen in January 2023. Roughly 1,000 people work at the Coventry facility.
The workers are unhappy with a pay increase of 3%, or 50 pence per hour, Amazon introduced in the summer, which they say fails to match the rising cost of living. They want Amazon to pay a minimum of £15 an hour [roughly $18.22 USD]…. Around 98% of the workers who turned out to vote opted to go on strike on a turnout of more than 63%.
In an emailed statement to CNBC, an Amazon spokesperson said: “We appreciate the great work our teams do throughout the year and we’re proud to offer competitive pay which starts at a minimum of between £10.50 [$12.75] and £11.45 [$13.90] per hour, depending on location. This represents a 29 per cent increase in the minimum hourly wage paid to Amazon employees since 2018.”
Amazon also cited benefits they offer, adding “On top of this, we’re pleased to have announced that full-time, part-time and seasonal frontline employees will receive an additional one-time special payment of up to £500 [up to $670 USD] as an extra thank you.”
GMB’s senior organizer argues that “Amazon can afford to do better,” writes CNBC. “It’s not too late to avoid strike action; get round the table with GMB to improve the pay and conditions of workers.”

Look what you made Ticketmaster do.
The ticketing service has released a statement addressing the bungled sale of tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour saying, “we want to apologize to Taylor and all of her fans – especially those who had a terrible experience trying to purchase tickets.”
For those who haven’t been following the chaos, here’s a brief rundown. Ticketmaster canceled the general sale of tickets to Swift’s first tour since 2018 this past Thursday after rescheduling the Capital One cardholder sale. On top of that, the service was unprepared to deal with the volume of fans trying to purchase tickets through the Verified Fan presale this past Monday. The Ticketmaster website crashed ahead of the Verified Fan presale and fans endured hours-long queues with some getting an error message when they finally reached the front of the line.
“We estimate about 15% of interactions across the site experienced issues, and that’s 15% too many, including passcode validation errors that caused fans to lose tickets they had carted,” the press release reads.
Ticketmaster blamed “unprecedented traffic” on the site due to bots and fans without presale codes for the issues with the site during the Verified Fan presale.
In their lengthy statement, Ticketmaster runs through the numbers that informed their approach to the Eras Tour. It reports that 3.5 million people registered for the Verified Fan presale — the largest registration in its history. Around 1.5 million fans received presale codes and 2 million tickets were sold during the Verified Fan presale breaking their record for the most tickets sold in a day.
Yesterday, Swift broke her silence on the debacle in a statement on her Instagram story. The Midnights singer wrote, “we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they would.”
Hopefully, the story of Swift and Ticketmaster might be ending soon.
PRINCESS Anne is trying to “emulate her parents’ resilience” with her behaviour according to a body language expert.
Expert Judi James says Anne is trying to exhibit strength by keeping “formal and regimented” – but “her grief is clearly taking its toll”.

Body language expert Judi James said Anne is trying to exhibit strength[/caption]
Anne, 72, appeared stoic as she followed the Queen’s coffin on its journey from Balmoral to Edinburgh on Sunday.
And yesterday she took on the role of being the only royal to accompany the Queen’s coffin on its final journey to Buckingham Palace.
She has reflected a calm sense of continuity at a time of massive change over the last few days of mourning.
Of all the royals she has appeared the one looking determined to handle her grief in a very solitary way, body language expert Judi James said.

Arriving with the coffin last night she “marched” in step alongside a woman from the RAF, with her husband walking behind, Judi said.
But the expert said she looked “drawn and rather agitated, touching and moving the bag she had clasped tight under her arm”.
And Judi said that the Princess Royal seemed “to rock on her feet slightly” as the coffin emerged from the plane.
She said: “[Anne is] trying to show strength in mourning in the style of her mother and her father.
“The memory of her mother sitting isolated but still resilient at Prince Philip’s funeral seems to be a stance Anne is trying to emulate.
“But the grief is clearly taking its toll, possibly more than for her other siblings who seem to be more open about expressing and sharing their grief and receiving tactile support from those around them.
“Anne arrived in London with her mother’s coffin and despite having her husband close by there appeared to be no exchanges between them. This could have been deliberate.”
The expert added how “she clasped her hands in a steepled gesture of self-control” but her thumbs were “rubbing against one another in a self-comfort ritual”.
And Judi also noted: “She has inherited the strong, stoic, stiff-upper-lip body language attitude from both of her parents but that could be making the experience more intense for her.”
The other royals have appeared hugging and visibly supporting each other in a unique display of unity and family support, according to Judi.
Judi continued: “Anne though is still acting as her mother’s personal protector and supporter, escorting her on her final journey and emerging hollow-eyed from the plane.
“She looks determined but exhausted and desperately isolated despite the fact she has her husband following behind.”
It comes as…
Yesterday, Princess Anne said she felt “fortunate” to have been with her mother just before she died in a touching tribute.
The Princess Royal added that it has been “an honour and a privilege” to accompany the Queen on her final journey.
Members of the family gathered to meet them – led by King Charles III and the Queen Consort.
And she has been humbled by the love and respect shown towards Her Majesty, she wrote this evening.
Princess Anne said last night: “I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother’s life.
“It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys. Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.
“We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss.

“We may have been reminded how much of her presence and contribution to our national identity we took for granted.
“I am also so grateful for the support and understanding offered to my dear brother Charles as he accepts the added responsibilities of The Monarch. To my mother, The Queen, thank you.”
