Foxconn to Make AirPods for the First Time, New Factory Planned in India
The Taiwanese contract manufacturer plans to build a factory in India to produce the earphones, underlining efforts by the key Apple supplier to diversify production away from China.
According to the report’s sources, Foxconn will invest more than $200 million in a new AirPods assembly plant in the southern Indian state of Telangana.
Construction of the facility is expected to start in the second half of this year and begin production by the end of 2024 at the earliest.
Foxconn officials are said to have debated internally for months about whether to assemble AirPods, due to the relatively low profit margins, but they ultimately decided to go ahead with the deal to “reinforce engagement” with Apple.
The decision to set up production in India was requested by Apple, according to one of the report’s sources. Besides the Telangana facility, Foxconn reportedly plans to ramp up its investment in India with a view to manufacturing smartphones, EVs, and semiconductors.
It’s not clear which model(s) of AirPods are included in Foxconn’s order, but there’s a high chance they will include a USB-C connector instead of a Lightning connector, as Apple is rumored to be planning to introduce iPhone 15 models with a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port in 2023.

‘iPhone 15 Ultra’ Won’t Be Exclusively Assembled by Foxconn
Rumors suggest that there will be increased differentiation between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. As a result, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the Pro Max could potentially be renamed the iPhone 15 Ultra, like the Apple Watch Ultra.
Last month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Luxshare and Pegatron had each obtained about 10% of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max orders from Foxconn, but he noted that mass shipments would not begin until late December at the earliest. TrendForce said this will serve as a trial run for Apple diversifying its iPhone production partners.
Foxconn has experienced “significant strain” since October due to COVID-19 outbreaks at its factory in Zhengzhou, China, resulting in significantly reduced production capacity for iPhone 14 Pro models, according to TrendForce. The research firm said China’s supply chain has also started to experience a labor shortage this month as the Chinese government eased COVID-19 restrictions, leading to increased spread of the virus.
Due to the production issues and economic headwinds, TrendForce has lowered its iPhone shipments forecast for the first quarter of 2023 to 47 million units, which would be a year-over-year decline of 22%, according to the research firm.

Kuo: iPhone 14 Pro Sales Are in Big Trouble Due to Foxconn Factory Protests
Kuo today said iPhone production at the factory in Zhengzhou has been “significantly affected” by the protests over unfavorable working conditions, leading him to cut his iPhone shipments forecast for the fourth quarter of 2022 by 20% to 70-75 million units, compared to a market consensus of 80-85 million units.
The average capacity utilization rate at the factory was only about 20% in November, and is only expected to improve to 30–40% in December, according to Kuo. He said Pegatron and Luxshare have each obtained about 10% of iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max orders from Foxconn, but said mass shipments will not be until late December at the earliest.
Kuo believes that the production issues could result in iPhone revenue being “significantly lower than the market consensus by 20–30% or more” this quarter.
Due to lengthy shipping delays and a recession, Kuo believes that most of the demand for iPhone 14 Pro models this quarter will simply “disappear” rather than be deferred, suggesting that many customers who would have purchased an iPhone 14 Pro right now will not return to order the device in January or later once supply improves.
iPhone 14 Pro models currently face at least a four-week shipping delay on Apple’s online store in the U.S. as the company struggles to maintain supply.
