Arm’s gains are SoftBank’s gains
Not so long ago, things were looking bleak for SoftBank, the investment holding company headed by eclectic — and controversial — tech mogul Masayoshi Son. The Vision Fund, SoftBank’s venture arm, posted a $6.2 billion loss in Q2 2023, tied to WeWork and other unfortunate bets. But — thanks in no small part to chip […]

Tesla App Gains Ultra Wideband Support to Improve Phone Keys
Ultra Wideband support provides more precise tracking capabilities than Bluetooth, which means the Phone Key feature will better recognize when an iPhone is near a vehicle to unlock/lock it at the appropriate time. From the release notes:
Ultrawide band (UWB) technology is now available for Phone Key. So your vehicle and Phone Key can communicate with greater accuracy to more responsively lock, unlock, and open Automatic Doors.
Tesla owners will need both a vehicle that supports Ultra Wideband and an iPhone with Ultra Wideband to take advantage of the new capabilities. Enabling the updated UWB key requires going to the Phone Key section of the Tesla app (which must be upgraded to version 4.29.5) and following the upgrade steps.

Porsche Taycan Gains Support for Apple Maps EV Routing
The Apple Maps EV Routing option will allow Taycan users to plan travel routes that include stops for charging. Prior to now, Taycan owners had to exit out of CarPlay in order to create a route that included charging stops.
Taycan vehicles include the Porsche Charging Planner, designed to optimize stops based on the anticipated state of charge upon arrival to a destination, traffic conditions, and average speed, but Apple Maps EV Routing is now available as an alternative for those who use CarPlay.
Apple Maps EV Routing uses real-time vehicle information to help customers get to their destination, with charging stops recommended when necessary. Apple Maps analyzes elevation changes along a route and other factors to determine when to suggest a charging stop, and if the vehicle’s battery gets too low, it will provide a route to the nearest compatible charging station.
Porsche says that Apple Maps EV routing is available to U.S.-based Taycan owners who have installed the latest My Porsche app on their iPhones.
