UFC 285: Watch Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane face off in extremely TENSE final staredown ahead of title fight
JON JONES and Ciryl Gane took part in a heated final staredown ahead of their heavyweight title fight.
The duo, 35 and 32 respectively, will throw down for the vacant heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 285 in Las Vegas.
The pair took part in a semi-intense staredown during Thursday’s pre-fight press conference at the MGM Grand Garden’s KA Theater on Thursday.
But it was a lot tenser the second time around.
Gane, who weighed in a 247lbs, took the scale first for the ceremonial weigh-ins and had to deal with a cascade of boos.
The Frenchman lapped them up and showed no sign of being rattled by the pro-Jones crowd as he waited for his opponent.
UFC legend Jones came out to a chorus of cheers from the raucous crowd and chants of his name.
And the fans went into a tizzy as he hit the ceremonial scale.
But their anticipation for the fight, and that of MMA fans around the world, really blew up when the pair went face-to-face for the final time before fight night.
During Thursday’s pre-fight press conference, he said: “I respect Ciryl Gane, I really do.

“But I study film constantly and I just see a lot of patterns.
“When he’s in one stance, there’s things he really loves to do.
“He goes to the same well a lot. When he’s in the opposite stance, he has his tendencies.
“Outside of that, I realized that he doesn’t have much wrestling.
“He relies on evasion, trying to get away. He relies on jiu-jitsu instead of solid takedown defense, and same with the ground game.
” I watched Francis Ngannou be able to rack up maybe five, six minutes of top time in that fight, and Francis is not a guy that’s known to control people on the top.
“He does have the striking down. I don’t think defensively he’s a very strong kickboxer. He has a really nice offense.
“Like I said, his defense is mainly in his footwork, and two other big holes are jiu-jitsu and wrestling.”

MMA fans have been champing at the bit to see them go at it after it was confirmed Jones would move up in weight to challenge the former interim champion.
The pair got the opportunity to size one another up during a pre-fight press conference at the KA Theater at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Thursday night.
They traded verbal jabs much to the delight of the rabid fans in attendance.
And they got up close and personal a few moments after the conclusion of the presser.
A fired up Jones strode confidently towards Gane before UFC president Dana White separated them and placed the vacant title between them.

Hall of Famer Jones was last in action at UFC 247 in February 2020 against Dominick Reyes in what proved to be his final outing at light-heavyweight.
Jones retained his light-heavyweight crown with a unanimous decision victory, although many thought he lost the final.
Gane, meanwhile, bounced from defeat in his unification bout with Ngannou last January with a stunning third-round TKO victory over fan favourite Tai Tuivasa in Paris last September.

What’s been said?
Jones said: “It’s kind of short time for me. I wish I had a little bit more time to prepare
“This idea of preparing for a new opponent in about six or seven weeks, I’ve done it before and I think it’s more than enough time.
“I would have liked more time, but I do think that this is a good amount of time, I feel great.”
On an elusive clash with Ngannou, the former pound-for-pound king told RMC Sport: “I don’t think I deserve any criticism.
“I’m here. Francis had the opportunity to face me and he opted out of the opportunity.
“If anyone should be criticized, it’s Francis Ngannou.
“If I’m correct, he was offered the biggest contract in Heavyweight history.
“He had the opportunity to be a guy that dethroned me and he didn’t believe in himself. He wasn’t willing to gamble on himself.”
Gane said: “I know I’ve got good footwork at first, I think I’m a little bit more well-rounded [than Francis Ngannou].
“I look a little bit more like Jon Jones.
“Yes, when you have a big guy that just wants to kill you with one punch, it’s more easier for a guy well-rounded and smart like Jon Jones to manage the situation.
“Me, also, I am not like that. I like to manage the situation. It’s going to be really good.”
Weigh To Go
Jones told SunSport of his body transformation:
During the UFC 285 media day, he told SunSport: “I ended up off training camp bench pressing 315 (143kg) for five [reps].
“Deadlifts was about 640lbs and my squat was about 500lbs, maybe 520lbs, somewhere around there.
“Towards the end, I wasn’t going for big numbers.
“I was just going for explosiveness and muscular endurance. But I’ve got pretty strong over the last three years.”
He added: “A few months ago, I got up to 267lbs.
“But I felt a little more bloated and I didn’t like my endurance at that weight.”
“I plan on competing right around, anywhere between, 245 and 250lbs.”
