Civ 6 players are good managers and science proves it
Civ 6 players are cut out to do well in business management, or so a study from the Review of Managerial Science says. The study, Good Gamers, Good Managers? A Proof-of-Concept Study with Sid Meier’s Civilization, was published in the Review in 2020, but since most of us don’t spend our disposable income on JSTOR subscriptions, parts of it are making the rounds on Reddit now. Here’s the gist of the study (without having to buy a sub).

PS Plus Premium’s August update is good, bad, and ugly
Earlier this week, we heard about the next batch of games coming to bulk out the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers on Sony’s newly dressed-up subscription service. At first glance, it’s not a bad offering – for owners of PS Plus Extra, you’ll be able to pick up three different Yakuza titles (including the best one, Yakuza 0) – but beyond that, there are some glaring issues with this month’s rollout.
Sure, these three triple-A RPG games are a fantastic entry point for anyone jostling to get into the series for the first time. You can even come in at the ground floor, play Yakuza 0, and get to know gangland heartthrob Kazuma Kiryu and his stomping grounds of Kabukichō. For the sake of the headline at the top of this piece, this is Good.
Being able to play the first three full chapters of the Yakuza series (with the promise of the rest of the saga to come to PS Plus later) is objectively Good. There is nothing Bad, or indeed Ugly, about that. It’s moves like this that keep PS Plus a viable rival to Xbox Game Pass, and halt critics of the service calling it ‘a disaster’.

Mac Hacker’s Code Is So Good, Corporations Keep Stealing It
One of the central examples in Wardle’s case is a software tool called OverSight, which Wardle released in 2016. Oversight was developed as a way to monitor whether any macOS applications were surreptitiously accessing the microphone or webcam, with much success: it was effective not only as a way to find Mac malware that was surveilling users but also to uncover the fact that a legitimate application like Shazam was always listening in the background. […] But years after Oversight was released, he was surprised to find a number of commercial applications incorporating similar application logic in their own products — even down to replicating the same bugs that Wardle’s code had.
Three different companies were found to be incorporating techniques lifted from Wardle’s work in their own commercially sold software. None of the offending companies are named in the Black Hat talk, as Wardle says that he believes the code theft was likely the work of an individual employee, rather than a top-down strategy. The companies also reacted positively when confronted about it, Wardle says: all three vendors he approached reportedly acknowledged that his code had been used in their products without authorization, and all eventually paid him directly or donated money to the Objective-See Foundation. The Verge notes that Wardle’s cousin Josh Wardle created the popular Wordle game, which was purchased earlier this year by The New York Times.

Amazon finally added a good slideshow feature to the Echo Show
Amazon Echo Show smart displays have never been as good as Google’s Nest Hub or a dedicated digital photo frame for doing one thing well: showing your pictures. This is because Amazon clutters up the screen with questionably useful info and alternates your pretty pictures with suggestions for the latest Alexa skill you might like to try, a recipe for egg salad, or a news tidbit about a tomato shaped like a duck.
But as of August 5th, you can now command your Echo Show to show you just your pictures and nothing else for a whole three hours.
Amazon’s digital photo frame feature, previously only available on the Echo Show 15, is now on all…
