GTA Sells 5M Copies In Past 3 Months, Jumps To 180 Million In Total Sales
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has revealed that GTA 5 has sold over 180 million units. Even more impressive is five million of these were only sold within the last three months, nearly a decade after the game was first released.
The news comes from Take-Two’s latest earnings report, which stated that GTA 5 has reached over one billion dollars in retail sales “faster than any entertainment release in history.” The report also states that the franchise has sold over 400 million units and that “active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.” Although no date was given for the next GTA, it’s known that Rockstar has been working on another installment. Late last year, a massive leak showed off early gameplay footage and screenshots of GTA 6.
In addition to GTA 5 reaching over 180 million units, the Red Dead Redemption series has also seen continued success. The franchise has sold over 75 million units worldwide, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 53 million units and is the second best-selling title in the US based on dollar sales in the last five years.
GTA 6 Might Release As Soon As 2024, Take-Two Suggests
Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive may have just revealed the release window for the next entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto 6. Based on statements made during Take-Two’s annual earnings call, it seems likely that the highly-anticipated title could launch as early as next year.
In the company’s annual earnings report, Take-Two shared a staggeringly high $8 billion net bookings goal for fiscal year 2025, which kicks off next April. To put that number into perspective, the company reported a record-breaking net bookings of $5.3 billion this past year. In years prior, Take-Two’s net bookings has hovered around $3 billion. The company elaborated on these projections during the call, stating:
“Looking ahead, fiscal 2025 is a highly anticipated year for our company. For the last several years, we have been preparing our business to release an incredibly robust pipeline of projects that we believe will take our company to even greater levels of success. In fiscal 2025, we expect to enter this new era by launching several groundbreaking titles that we believe will set new standards in our industry and enable us to achieve over $8 billion in net bookings and over $1 billion in adjusted unrestricted operating cash flow. We expect to sustain this momentum by delivering even higher levels of operating results in Fiscal 2026 and beyond.”

Before I Knew New York, I Knew Liberty City: A Retrospective on GTA IV’s Setting
Grand Theft Auto IV is celebrating its 15-year anniversary today, April 29, 2023. Below, a New Yorker recalls how Rockstar’s imaginary version of Manhattan helped him connect with his home.
Ask anyone I’ve ever shown around New York and they’d tell you that I refer to myself as “the worst New Yorker.” That’s because, for the longest time in my life, I just didn’t know it. I knew the city as a skyline I could see from my window and maps I could reference online, but I rarely went out and explored my own home. I couldn’t tell you up from down on the Manhattan grid and I certainly couldn’t point you to any specific locale. Early in life, this flaw was easy to chalk up to having a busy immigrant family that couldn’t afford to take me out as a kid. Later in life, though, when opportunities arose as a teenager, it was social anxieties and unfortunately learned behavior that kept me indoors and playing games instead. And so for the longest time in my life, I had no intimate knowledge of or connection to the only place I’ve ever called home. That was, at least, until Grand Theft Auto IV came into my life.
15 years ago, GTA IV upended my relationship with New York City by providing me with one. Before I knew the sights and sounds of my own home, I knew Liberty City like the back of my hand. Around the time of GTA IV’s launch, Rockstar went all in on increasingly detailed and realistic simulations of people and places. To its credit, GTA IV felt like enough of a simulacrum of New York (for the time) that I treated it as a substitute for the real thing. So, yes, reader, I first mapped out my home of New York City via Liberty City. In turn, I learned to love a place I had never given a proper shot.

GTA 5 system requirements 2023
What are GTA 5 system requirements? You won’t need a ridiculous rig to run the Rockstar crime caper, but Grand Theft Auto V still benefits from decent specs. The minimum bar is low enough that you can actually play without a dedicated GPU, but if you’re looking for a stopgap until GTA 6 arrives, we’d suggest using a proper graphics card.

Former GTA boss unveils MindsEye, a new “blockbuster” available in Robloxlike Everywhere
Everywhere (not to be confused with Everything) was a big fat question mark at last year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live. It comes from Build A Rocket Boy, the studio founded by ex-GTA boss Leslie Benzies, and despite its cryptic reveal trailer, AliceB theorised it was some kind of Robloxlike. Turns out her hunch was correct – Everywhere is a platform that allows players to create their own custom content. To show off what the tools can do, Benzies and the team unveiled MindsEye, an episodic “blockbuster” adventure available inside Everywhere. A game set inside a game, if you will.
GTA 6 release date rumours, news, and speculation
Want to know more about the GTA 6 release date? Given how many years it takes to create open worlds of the same calibre as GTA V, it’s no surprise that Rockstar Games has already spent years developing GTA 6. Like most developers, Rockstar prefers to keep its secrets close to its chest until they’re close to the end of development, so we may not see any official GTA 6 gameplay for some time.
Early gameplay footage of GTA 6 recently surfaced online, along with lines of source code from the game itself. Rockstar has issued a statement on Twitter which confirms that an unauthorised third party managed to access and download information from their systems, including development footage for the open-world game. However, its statement notes that the developers don’t believe this leak should impact the development of their long-term projects or disrupt their live service games.
