Tom Hanks says he would boycott woke versions of classic books
ACTOR Tom Hanks says he would boycott woke versions of classic books such as Roald Dahl tales.
Hanks, now a bestselling author, said he was “of the opinion that we’re all grown-ups here”.
His comments come after publisher Puffin announced it would remove or rewrite “offensive” language around issues such as weight and gender.
Asked if language should be changed in classics by children’s author Dahl and Agatha Christie, Forrest Gump star Hanks said: “We understand the time and the place and when these things were written.
“And it’s not very hard at all to say: that doesn’t quite fly right now, does it?
“Let’s have faith in our own sensibilities here, instead of having somebody decide what we may or may not be offended by.”
Hanks, 66, added on BBC Radio 4: “Let me decide what I am offended by and not offended by.
“I would be against reading any book from any era that says ‘abridged due to modern sensitivities’.”
PM Rishi Sunak has also previously spoken out against the woke rewrites.
He weighed in after Puffin Books altered passages deemed offensive – including removing the word fat when describing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Augustus Gloop.

Not to be left behind in any trend-chasing, Hollywood is scrambling after the promise of artificial intelligence. In this case, one movie is banking its premise on the promise of AI-driven deepfake tech.

Tom Hanks gives ultimate grandpa energy in ‘A Man Called Otto’ trailer
Is it really Christmas time if we don’t have at least one movie with an old grumpy guy’s heart thawing thanks to a bunch of kids and family?
Tom Hanks’ latest endeavor, A Man Called Otto, is a heartwarming little story of a lonely widower who finds a family through his new neighbors. Adapted from Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove and directed by Marc Foster (Finding Neverland), the touching feature sees Otto Anderson’s (Tom Hanks) whole world turning upside down when his pregnant neighbor, Marisol (Mariana Treviño), knocks on his door.
I don’t know about you, but personally, I’m ready for more Tom Hanks grandpa-core.
A Man Called Otto is premiering across select theaters on Dec. 25, with a wide release on Jan. 13.
There’s a trivia app in Tom Hanks’ boot, and it’s coming to Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade’s latest exclusive is… a Tom Hanks passion project?
Hanx101 Trivia, a trivia game that is narrated by actor Tom Hanks, will soon be one of the games exclusively available on the Apple Arcade subscription service (via Variety). Despite the name, it’s not a game dedicated to quizzing you about Hanks’ career — a press release from the game’s developer, Blueline Studios, says it’ll feature “tens of thousands of questions” about subjects like history, math, geography, and food. (I’m hoping the later set contains at least one question about a box of chocolate.)
The game will feature a head-to-head competition mode, a team mode, and a “Hanx101 mode” where you apparently try to get a high score while answering 101 questions. There will also apparently be “unique formats such as ‘Word Jam’ and ‘I…
Tom Hanks created a trivia game and it’s coming to Apple Arcade this Friday
Tom Hanks has leaned into one of his passions by creating a trivia game with the help of developer BlueLine Studios. Not only is it Hanks’ first game, it’ll be the only trivia title on Apple Arcade to date. Hanx101 Trivia will feature questions in several categories, including history, math, geography and food. You can try to beat your high score or face off against other players in head-to-head bouts and team matchups when the game arrives this Friday.
This isn’t the first time Hanks has worked on an app for Apple devices. In 2014, he debuted Hanx Writer, a typewriter-themed writing app that became a hit on iPad. His production company also has an exclusive deal with Apple. Hanks’ movies Greyhound and Finch are Apple TV+ originals.
Several other games are coming to Apple Arcade in September. One of them is Gris+, an updated version of the gorgeous indie hit. Apple named it the best Mac game of the year in its 2019 App Store awards and called it a “masterpiece in visualization and atmospheric storytelling.” Apple Arcade subscribers can play it at no extra cost starting on September 30th.
Along with those, you’ll be able to try arcade racer Horizon Chase 2 (September 9th, coming to PC and consoles next year) and Garden Tails: Match and Grow, a new match-three puzzler from Two Dots studio PlayDots (September 16th). Farming sim Farmside will join the Apple Arcade lineup on September 23rd, as will a long-in-the-works Shovel Knight game, Shovel Knight Dig. The latter will hit Steam and Nintendo Switch on the same day.
The next epic platformer in the Shovel Knight saga is finally on the horizon!
We are proud to announce that our ambitious co-developed title, Shovel Knight Dig, will be coming to Nintendo Switch, Apple Arcade, & Steam on September 23rd, 2022.
