“There’s no real need” to turn games into movies, says Death Stranding movie director Hideo Kojima
Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima has claimed his upcoming Death Stranding movie is “taking a direction that nobody has tried before with a movie adaptation of a game”, arguing that other attempts to wring movies out of game-ies have failed because they “cater to gamers”. His will be different, he says, because he’s “taking the approach of changing and evolving the world of Death Stranding in a way that suits film well”.
He also says there’s “no real need” to turn games into films, which is a true and enjoyable acknowledgement from someone who is doing that.

Death Stranding is getting a film adaptation, giving Hideo Kojima what he always wanted
Death Stranding, the game that is basically half movie, is officially getting a film adaptation.
He finally did it, folks: Hideo Kojima is getting something he made onto the big screen. OK so, he’s not making it himself, but for the man who says “70% of my body is made of movies,” this is probably somewhat of a big deal. This comes from an exclusive report from Deadline, who reported that Hammerstone Studios will be helming the project. Hammerstone is fully financing the film, with Kojima and the studio’s founder Alex Lebovici serving as producers, and Kojima Productions and Allan Ungar also serving as executive producers.
It’s not stated whether it’s a direct adaptation of the game, but it will apparently introduce new elements and characters into the Death Stranding universe. No writer or director is attached as of yet either, nor any cast. If you weren’t aware, Death Stranding does actually feature a number of prominent actors, like Norman Reedus, who plays Sam in the game, previously best known for his role as Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead, and Lea Seydoux, who appeared in multiple James Bond films. So it wouldn’t be entirely unsurprising to see them reprise their roles for a live action adaptation.

Hideo Kojima had to rewrite Death Stranding 2 due to the pandemic
Death Stranding 2 was revealed this week, and according to Hideo Kojima himself, the game was rewritten due to the pandemic.
When the first Death Stranding launched in 2019, some thought that the enemies you occasionally faced obsessed with stealing packages from one of the few remaining delivery drivers in a post-apocalyptic America was a bit over the top. Then a pandemic hit in 2020, retroactively making the game an incredibly prescient one. So despite Kojima having had the story written prior to the pandemic, he had to completely change it once he experienced it.
“I had the story written before the pandemic, but after experiencing the pandemic, I rewrote the whole thing from scratch,” Kojima told The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley following the reveal of Death Stranding 2. “I also didn’t want to predict any more future, so I rewrote it.”
