A WOMAN who bought three homes for just £2.60 in Italy has revealed new plans she has for the properties.
Rubia Daniels intends to retire in picturesque Mussomeli, Sicily, where her houses are – but has now revealed she plans to create two businesses in the buildings.
The enthusiastic new home owner from California, who speaks Italian, first became aware of the 89p (€1) homes after reading an article about the small town online.
While she hadn’t intended to buy so many homes in 2019, she added: “It’s how the people make you feel that makes you say, ok, I’ll buy three.”
The properties are only a ten minute drive from one another.
She plans on turning one into a wellness centre.
The other will be an art gallery, and the third is reserved for her and her boyfriend to retire in after the massive £16,000 renovations.
She said: “You don’t even get a car for £16k in California, it’s a very small investment.
“We have one mostly completed already when we go, and hopefully the second will be done by October.
“I never felt overwhelmed or fearful about this project – it’s a big task but a great opportunity.”
Rubia plans to restore all three buildings to their former glory, and help restart the small town in which they lie.
She said: “It was a fantastic new concept for me.
“I work in the environmental industry and to use what we already have where properties have been abandoned – it’s a great opportunity.”
Several towns in Italy have made headlines in recent years for offering up the practically free houses to buyers.
The Sun previously reported that there are around 25 regions who have taken part in the scheme, each with a number of properties.
Many of the areas have a dwindling or aging population and hope to build the community again.
But while some do sell for 89p (€1), on average houses sell for around £4.4,000 (€5,000), although some are up to £17,000 (€20,000), according to Meredith Tabbone who bought one herself.
Not only that, but there are often fines for buyers who don’t complete their renovations in time.
Buyers are also often required to pay a £4.4,000 (€5,000) deposit, which they lose if they haven’t finished sprucing up their property within a set time.
Buyers are also advised to check on whether they are required to live in the property full time before buying, as some towns sell the houses on the condition of moving to the area, as well as working or starting a business there.
Dias claims that she ultimately “loves the architecture of the house and the history” of the old building, despite the pricey cost of the renovation.

When President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law in 2022, it put $52 billion in tax credits and funding on the table to help bolster the semiconductor industry in the US, with $39 billion specifically earmarked for semiconductor manufacturing incentives. Now, we’re starting to see how that initiative is going to play out: The Biden Administration has officially launched the first CHIPS for America funding opportunity, laying out the application process for “projects to construct, expand or modernize commercial facilities for the production of leading-edge, current-generation and mature-node semiconductors.”
The “first” in first funding opportunity is the key word here: At the start, CHIPS for America is specifically looking to fund projects that align with the program’s “vision for success” that seeks to have a number of leading-edge logic fabrication facilities and DRAM chip manufacturers by the end of the decade, as well as hitting specific production capacity goals for “current-generation and mature-node” semiconductors. The program plans to offer more funding opportunities for R&D and manufacturing equipment facilities at a later date. Applications for those programs won’t launch until late Spring and Fall of 2023, but the CHIPS Program Office is open to receiving statements of interest from hopeful applicants.
The program also includes strict guardrails for how funding is used. Applicants who are awarded CHIPS funding will be prohibited from using the payments for stock buybacks or to pay out dividends, and payments will be tied to meeting specific milestones. It’ll be awhile before the first recipients of CHIPS funding are announced, but hopeful projects can begin submitting applications on March 31, 2023. Want all the details? Wales earthquake: ‘Whole houses shaken’ by 4.2 magnitude tremor that was felt as far as the midlands
A POWERFUL 4.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the UK on Friday leaving “whole houses shaking”.
The tremor struck in South Wales just before midnight at a depth of just over one mile, according to the British Geological Survey.
It is said to have hit several miles north of the borough of Rhondda as stunned residents were tucked up in bed.
People situated as far away as Wolverhampton claimed to have felt the effects of the quake.
Locals in Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Llangynidr Llanover and Llanfoist reported that even their windows quivered from the force.
One person from Merthyr Tydfil described how their “whole house shook” as the 4.2 magnitude tremor struck.
Another reported they experienced a “slight shaking of their house” while the “handles on the furniture rattled”.
A resident in Mountain Ash told how their young son was woken from his slumber by the earthquake.
They wrote: “Thought something had fallen upstairs, then my son came down to say his bed shook waking him”.
Others said their properties “vibrated” and their possessions “actually moved” when the quake hit.
One woman added: “I heard a low rumble, then the wall shook and the chair jumped forward, which takes something with me sitting in it! Blimey. Not pleasant.”
Another local from Gilwern, 15 miles from the epicentre, said the tremor felt like an “explosion”.
A third wrote in a tweet: “My whole house shook and it felt like the roof was falling off.”
It comes after the UK was rocked by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake on February 12.
The tremor – which struck under the North Sea – was felt in areas along the Norfolk coast.
Residents in Essex were woken by a loud bang and rumble as a 2.6 magnitude quake hit the county on February 8.

In the midst of a chronic housing shortage, he urged town halls to let developers build so increased supply can drag prices down.
Mr Lewis said if 400,000 more homes were built every year, the economy would grow by £17.7bn – an increase of £600 in GDP per household.
And at least an extra 250,000 families at least would finally be able to buy a house per year, with landlords, movers and second home owners filling the rest.
In a new report for Policy Exchange the ex-minister also argued for a major expansion of social housing and for councils to be more upfront about what developers must do to secure planning approval.
The average UK house currently costs an eye-watering nine times average earnings.
It’s the worst prices have been since 1876.
Last year Housing Secretary Michael Gove watered down mandatory building targets after caving to NIMBY MPs.
Mr Lewis said: “To fulfil our country’s great potential, we must give young people cause to believe that, like their parents, securing a good job will enable them to buy a home of their own, and to settling down and have children.
“These ambitions depend on us delivering more homes. Addressing the UK’s housing shortage is a huge challenge, perhaps the greatest that we face as a country.
“At the same time, though, solving the crisis holds out the dual prospect of placing rocket boosters under our economy and selling a new generation on the British dream of homeownership.”
