Creative Assembly’s extraction shooter Hyenas gets a playable alpha tomorrow
Does Hyenas play better than it looks? Find out this weekend
Just before the year is over, Sega and Creative Assembly are giving players one more shot at getting some hands on time with the studio’s upcoming multiplayer shooter, Hyenas. This is the game’s biggest alpha weekend, meaning it will be open to a lot more players.
You still need an invite, as it’s not an open test, but your chances of getting in are much higher this time around.
The Hyenas alpha 1.10 test kicks off tomorrow, December 2 at 1pm PT, 4pm ET, 9pm UK. It’s avialable until Sunday, December 4 at 1am PT, 4am ET, 9am UK. If you played the game before, you’ll notice several UI, HUD and gameplay flow updates from previous builds.
Hyenas opens up its alpha to European players today
Sega’s team-based space shooter Hyenas is welcoming Europeans into its closed alpha from September 23rd, which just so happens to be today. If you signed up to the alpha anytime in the past few months since the game was announced then you might want to keep an eye on your emails for an invite. The FPS is currently only playable on PC, but the Hyenas team have said that’s set to change in the near future.
Hyenas needs more Escape From Tarkov, less Apex Legends
How is it that a squad-based FPS game like Hyenas, which is all about raiding vaults for rare treasure, is passing up the chance to add Escape From Tarkov’s persistent loot to its class-based, Apex Legends style action? When the first trailer for Creative Assembly’s forthcoming shooter arrived, it sounded like loot would be a foundational aspect of its gameplay loop, but after seeing it in action at Gamescom I’m surprised to discover that the merch you’re stealing is a mostly superficial means of progressing through each match.
Here’s how a Hyenas match plays out. You and a couple of friends pick characters from a roster of six, each with unique weapons, abilities, and play styles, and then you dock at a floating shopping mall called a Plundership with the goal of stealing as much pop culture merch as possible. You’re not the only pack of Hyenas onboard though, and as you move between different stores you’ll come up against rival squads who are competing for the same merch. There are a variety of different stores you can rob, and you’ll need to hit up a few in order to meet the loot quota, at which point an exfil route opens up. You’re effectively racing to fill a meter.

Alpha Gameplay for Sega and Creative Assembly’s Hyenas Has Leaked
Someone has broken their NDA, as evident by an hour-long Hyenas gameplay footage uploaded to YouTube. It’s likely from Hyenas’ July alpha and is splashed with watermarks all over the screen.
The leak first begins with a tutorial section, a guide that includes how to heal and revive downed teammates and how to hold the “getaway zone.” The character menu also shows that each Hyena comes with a primary and secondary weapon–and some of them look unique to each individual character.
Hyenas was first announced on June 22 and is a collaboration between Sega and Creative Assembly. Its gameplay skews towards battle royale PvP with PvE elements. In a single match, there are five crews with three “hyenas” each competing for merch. Win conditions are filling your merch quota–whether through finding it or ambushing other crews for the merch they have–and escaping with it. Once a team’s quota has been met, they need to protect it until the teleportation zone is available to use.
