Linux Kernel Gets More Infrastructure for Rust, Increasing Interest in the Language
And there’s still no actual Rust code in Linux:
“You need to get all those things that can make sure that Rust can compile, and you can do the debugging and all these things,” explained Joel Marcey, director of advocacy and operations for the Rust Foundation, “and make sure that the memory safety is there and all that sort of stuff. And that has to happen first before you can actually write any real code in Rust for the Linux kernel itself.”
Marcey explained that Linux is going to be doing this inclusion very piecemeal, with lots of little integrations here and there over time so they can see how it is working. “I would imagine that over the next year, you’re going to see more small incremental changes to the kernel with Rust, but as people are seeing that it’s actually kind of working out, you’ll be able to maybe, for example, write Linux drivers or whatever with Rust,” said Marcey….
According to Bec Rumbul, executive director of the Rust Foundation, Rust being added to the kernel is an “enormous vote of confidence in the Rust programming language.” She explained that in the past other languages have been planned to make it into the kernel and ended up not getting put in. “I think having someone with the kind of intellectual gravity of Linus Torvalds saying ‘No, it’s going in there,’ that kind of says an awful lot about how reliable Rust already is and how much potential there is for the future as well,” she said.
Rumbul believes that there will be an increased interest in the language, which is still relatively new (It first made its debut in 2010) compared to some of the other languages out there to choose from. “I suspect that because Rust is now in the kernel, and it’s just being talked about much … more widely, that it will seem like an attractive prospect to a lot of people that are looking to develop their skills and their knowledge,” she said. Rumbul hopes people will also be inspired to participate in the language as contributors and maintainers, because those are some of the less popular roles within open source, but are extremely critical to the health of a language, she explained.
The Rust Foundation also launched a new security team in September to ensure best practices (including a dedicated security engineer). Their first initiative will be a security audit and threat modeling exercises.
“We want to basically shore up,” Rust operations director Marcey tells SD Times, “to ensure that Rust itself is actually as secure as we always say it is.”
In this year’s Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 86.73% of developers said they love Rust.

Kuo: Apple Increasing iPhone 14 Pro Production Due to Strong Demand
“Due to strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro models, my latest survey indicates that Apple has asked Hon Hai to switch the production lines of the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 14 Pro models,” said Kuo in a tweet today. Foxconn is formally known as Hon Hai.
Kuo said Foxconn will convert some of its iPhone 14 assembly lines to iPhone 14 Pro assembly lines as a result of the move, adding that the conversion will be equivalent to about a 10% increase in the shipment forecast of iPhone 14 Pro models. The analyst noted this will help to increase the average selling price of iPhones in the fourth quarter.

In the United States, most iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max configurations ordered today on Apple’s online store are estimated for delivery in mid-October or later, while the standard iPhone 14 is more readily available. iPhone 14 Plus launches October 7 and currently remains available for delivery on that date.
Key new features of iPhone 14 Pro models include the Dynamic Island, an upgraded rear camera system that can shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos, an always-on display option, a faster A16 Bionic chip, new Deep Purple and Space Black color options, and more.

PlayStation 5 Price Increasing In Europe, Canada, And More
Sony Interactive Entertainment is increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 across various regions, citing global economic challenges and adverse currency trends as the primary reason.
SIE CEO Jim Ryan states in a blog post that the decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) for the PS5 has been a difficult one, but that global inflation as necessitated it. Regions affected by the price increase include all of Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and parts of North America. The United States is, however, unaffected.
Below is a breakdown of the new prices for both PS5 versions across affected regions. The price increase will only take effect in Japan from September 15 due to how the region handles sales through a lottery system. Other increases are immediate.
Tesla is increasing the price of its Full Self-Driving software to $15,000
For the second time this year, Tesla is increasing the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature. On Saturday, Elon Musk tweeted that the upfront cost of the driver assistance software would increase to $15,000 on September 5th. The automaker will honor the current $12,000 price on orders made before that date but will deliver those vehicles at a later date. “Note, you can upgrade your existing car to FSD in 2 mins via the Tesla app,” Musk added. He didn’t say if Tesla would increase the price of its FSD subscription plans. Depending on the current Autopilot capabilities of your Tesla, adding the software currently costs as much as $199 per month.
Tesla has consistently increased the price of its Full Self-Driving feature over the years. When the company first began offering FSD as a separate option from Autopilot, it cost consumers $5,000 to add the software during configuration and $7,000 post-delivery. At the start of the year, the price of FSD went from from $10,000 to $12,000. Elon Musk telegraphed Tesla would increase the price of FSD yet again back in July when he said the software was “ridiculously cheap” at $12,000 and that a price hike would mean the difference between Tesla “being worth a lot money or worth basically zero.”
After wide release of FSD Beta 10.69.2, price of FSD will rise to $15k in North America on September 5th.
Current price will be honored for orders made before Sept 5th, but delivered later.
