Revisiting The Columbus Poltergeist – Skeptical Inquirer
In his “Ghosts in the Machine” podcast, skeptic Kenny Biddle revisits one of the most famous poltergeist cases in the United States, which involved the odd goings-on around 14-year-old Tina Resch in Columbus, Ohio, in 1984. Biddle tries to find conventional ways to explain some of the “poltergeist” disturbances that took place around Resch, including glassware, eggs, and candlesticks that were allegedly thrown about by an “unseen force.” But the Psychical Research Foundation (PRF) has found numerous issues with Biddle’s re-examination of the case, which are spelled out in detail in Comments on a Recent Skeptical Revisitation of the Columbus Poltergeist Case. Although Biddle says he read the definitive text on the case, Unleashed, Of Poltergeists and Murder: The Curious Story of Tina Resch by the late parapsychologist William Roll and co-author Valerie Story, he seems to ignore “the most interesting and crucial parts of the case, and the ones that skeptics do not seem to ever mention (much less address).” The PRF kindly advises “caution” in accepting Biddle’s re-examination.
