Project L news: More info discreetly revealed to pro players ahead of Evo Japan, still no release date
Reset the clock, we’ve got more Project L news. Riot Games‘ very own in-development fighting game rarely pops its head up, but the latest news from Evo Japan stands out as one of the most impactful early info drops we’ve seen to date.
This information comes from professional player GamerBee, who was invited to a behind-closed-doors “banquet” where Riot staff showed off a new Project L video to select players, answering their questions and addressing their concerns. While recording was not allowed, attendees were allowed to share waht was discussed online. As such, GamerBee did us all a favour by translating their notes into English and posted them online.
However, these notes were translated via ChatGPT and as such aren’t 100% accurate. We reached out to Riot to confirm the validity of GamerBee’s notes. A spokesperson responded by saying the gist of the post was correct, although as an AI translation it was not a verbatim representation of exact points made at the meeting.

Project L: Riot’s League of Legends Fighting Game Resurfaces With New Gameplay
New Project L dev update has us pumped over tag system overview, core gameplay details, and Illaoi
The wait is over. Project L has just received its second and final update for 2022, featuring some in-engine Illaoi gameplay, a core gameplay breakdown, as well as an overview of the tag system that’ll play a major part in Riot’s free to play fighter.
This update comes with lead designer Tom Cannon providing much needed info as we’ve come to expect, as well as Shaun “unconkable” Rivera. Rivera joined the team earlier this year, having transitioned from the Legends of Runeterra team. He’s also a big name in the USA fighting game scene, notably being an excellent Tekken player back in his day.
You can watch the full Twitter update video above, but if you’re looking for a breakdown of what’s been shown we’ve got you covered. First off is Illaoi, who we got a glimpse at back with the game’s free-to-play announcement earlier this year. Since then, the bruiser has been added in-engine, giving us a broad overview of their hard-hitting playstyle.
There’s a “leaked Project L roster” going around — take it with a heap of salt.
There are rumours circulating of a Project L roster leak right now. The source, a League of Legends client survey revealed online by Youtuber Innovate Gaming, has many in the early Project L community excited for potential picks. However, it’s worth taking the “roster leak” with a pinch of salt.
The client survey, recently shown off to the world by Innovate gaming but first filled out back in June 2022, features a list of 22 League of Legends characters. For each character, the video shows the question “how would you describe your relationship with the champions below?” Innovate Gaming also claims the survey asked about the characteristics of certain characters, and what made them memorable. If it is a real client survey, it very much appears to be Project L related.
There are several reasons why a portion of the early Project L community are convinced this features future characters. For one, each of the six characters we’ve already seen in Project L are present. Secondly, questions surrounding champion characteristics and memorable aspects line up with what the Project L team has established as a core character design goal, as seen in Illaoi’s concept blog post.
