BioShock Infinite’s Complicated Legacy Overshadows Its Greatest Failure
BioShock is celebrating its 10-year anniversary today, March 26, 2023. Below, we reexamine the game with modern eyes, in the context of its place in the series as a whole.
If you’re reading this, odds are that you have some opinion of BioShock Infinite, and it’s likely to be a passionate one. When it released in March 2013, it generated enormous fanfare, inspiring strong stances from both excited series fans and those who felt let down by the final product. It continues to garner polarized reactions 10 years later, perhaps to an alarming extent. Once you go beyond the social media furor and the thwarted expectations, you have a game that ultimately failed to live up to the identity of its own series–and one that deserves neither the seemingly-bottomless stores of love and hate that some still heap on it.
The by-the-numbers nature of BioShock Infinite is perhaps most apparent in its moment-to-moment gameplay. Though ostensibly intended as the true successor to the original BioShock, Infinite simplifies the mechanics of the “immersive sim”-inspired series to the absolute minimum. The FPS part of this so-called “FPS RPG” series is tuned to max, and the RPG part is nearly cast away entirely.

If you got your blue Twitter verification checkmark the old-fashioned way—you know, by not paying for it—then I have bad news for you. The Tesla CEO turned Twitter CEO reiterated today that legacy blue checkmarks on the platform will be yoinked from users’ authenticated hands on April 1…or will they?

To celebrate Deep Rock Galactic’s fifth anniversary, developer Ghost Ship took us back in time to the mystical land of 2018 and let us play Deep Rock Galactic Legacy, a version of the co-op shooter as it was back in 2018, before all of the updates. It was a fun, nostalgic way to let fans reminisce on the game’s infantile days. Ghost Ship had planned to remove Legacy today – March 23rd – but after fan feedback, they’ve decided to keep Legacy edition around indefinitely.
Twitter will kill ‘legacy’ blue checks on April 1
Twitter has picked April Fool’s Day, otherwise known as April 1, to start removing legacy blue checkmarks from the platform. Despite the significance of the day Twitter chose, the removal of legacy checkmarks has been anticipated for months now. Musk tweeted in December that the company would remove those checks “in a few months” because […]

Twitter has announced that it’ll start “winding down” its legacy verified program and removing “legacy verified checkmarks” starting on April 1st, and is telling users to subscribe to its Blue subscription if they want to keep their blue check.
There’s a lot to unpack here. First, the announcement isn’t necessarily a surprise. CEO Elon Musk has been promising to get rid of “legacy” blue check marks, or verification badges that were given under Twitter’s previous rules, since November, and he’s reiterated that they’d be going away “in coming months” several times. According to Musk, those verification badges were given out in a “corrupt and nonsensical” manner (though they are in fact quite useful for letting users confirm that the…

James Gunn explains his plan for the DCU movie that will launch a new era
James Gunn To Direct Superman: Legacy For Warner Bros.
James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, has officially announced that he will be directing Superman: Legacy. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report.
Superman: Legacy is set to be the first major film of the Gunn-Safran era, with a scheduled release date of July 11, 2025, according to Warner Bros. The movie will explore Superman’s balancing of his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, as he embodies truth, justice, and the American way. Peter Safran told The Hollywood Reporter in late January that Superman is “kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

Superman will not be played by Henry Cavill, who portrayed the superhero in previous films. After Gunn and Safran took over DC, they decided to go in a younger direction for the hero.
