Seth Rogen, Chris Pratt, And Charlie Day All Want Mario x Metroid
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here, it’s great, and it’s poised to dominate the box office and spawn a new movie franchise–or maybe even a full-blown cinematic universe with some of Nintendo’s many other intellectual properties.
It’s an enticing prospect, and hardly impossible to imagine when mega-franchises like Marvel and Star Wars continue to dominate pop culture. And so we couldn’t help but ask Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong themselves–that’s Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Seth Rogen–about the possibility of moving past the borders of the Mario galaxy and meeting some other Nintendo folks.
All three had the same first answer: Metroid.
Metroid Fusion remains the scariest 2D game ever
If you’re good enough, you only need 240×160 pixels to scare the shit out of players. Released alongside the first Metroid Prime in November 2002, Metroid Fusion marked the long-awaited return of Samus Aran to the 2D action-adventure genre. Something had changed beyond the gorgeous new visuals and gameplay improvements though; Fusion was substantially more hair-raising than its predecessors.
Even Metroid Prime, which launched literally the following day in North America, didn’t manage to capture that same feeling of dread (pun intended) despite its flashy 3D take on Samus’ previously untold misadventures. Time has told us many times that true terror in video games comes from distinct stylistic choices and meticulous game design, things that are often hard to nail down.
The story takes renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran to the planet SR388, where she’s attacked by parasitic organisms known as, simply, X. Her body is recovered and transferred to the Galactic Federation for medical treatment. They cure her with a vaccine made from Metroid cells; it gives her the ability to absorb X nuclei and even gain new powers – but also burdens her with some of the Metroids’ weaknesses. Meanwhile, the Biologic Space Laboratories (BSL) station that was studying her damaged suit goes silent, so off she goes to investigate and save the day.

‘Metroid Fusion’ comes to Switch Online Expansion Pack on March 9th
One of the Game Boy Advance’s better-known games is officially playable on a modern console. Nintendo has announced that Metroid Fusion will be available to Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers on March 9th. The 2D exploration title hasn’t changed in the past two decades, but that might not be a bad thing — it represented the culmination of the original Metroid formula before the arrival of Metroid Dread in 2021.
Metroid Fusion added some twists to the plot and mechanics when it arrived in 2002. You have to fight shapeshifting parasites that include clones of Samus Aran — you’re not just battling another wave of Metroids. The game also has a more linear, story-driven experience than past titles (there’s even a Navigation Room to tell you where to go), and new abilities to climb ladders and grab ledges made you more nimble.
An Expansion Pack membership costs $50 per year. It’s not necessarily worth the investment just for Fusion, but the addition makes the Game Boy selection more compelling. That’s on top of perks like classic Nintendo 64 releases, Genesis games and Switch game add-ons. You’re effectively paying for a nostalgia trip alongside Online’s base multiplayer, cloud saves and NES/SNES catalog.

Metroid Fusion will be the next GBA game on Switch Online
Nintendo puts the whole mainline 2D Metroid series in one place from next week
Metroid Fusion Is Coming To Nintendo Switch Online On March 9
As a part of Nintendo’s recent move to bring its more iconic Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles to its subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online, the company has announced a port of Metroid Fusion is on the way. The classic Game Boy Advance title will be available for all subscribers starting Thursday, March 9.
Originally released in 2002, Metroid Fusion follows the iconic bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the surface of planet SR388 in search of parasitic organisms referred to as X. The 2D action game is commonly regarded as one of the best entries in the Metroid series. In GameSpot’s review of Metroid Fusion, we stated its “extremely responsive controls, terrific graphics, and great audio make Fusion easily one of the best action games for the Game Boy Advance.”
Metroid Fusion’s surprise announcement comes hot on the heels of Metroid Prime Remake’s reveal last month. And, considering Metroid Dread is also a fairly recent entry in the Metroid series, we’re crossing our fingers all this means the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4 is coming sooner rather than later. Announced back in 2017, the fourth entry in the series has been in and out of development repeatedly over the course of the last six years. However, development on the game restarted in 2019 after producer Kensuke Tanabe, who also served in this role on the first three games and Metroid Prime: Hunters, decided to return to the series.
