Instagram’s next feature might be a copy of BeReal
Instagram is testing a new feature called Candid Challenges, which bears a striking resemblance to BeReal, a photo sharing app popular among Gen. Z. The currently unreleased feature was spotted by Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer known for reverse engineering apps and finding early versions of upcoming updates. An Instagram spokesperson confirmed the feature is an “internal prototype,” but declined to provide additional details.
According to Paluzzi, Instagram users participating in Candid Challenges will see a notification at a different time each day to snap a photo of their surroundings. Upon getting the prompt, the Instagram camera will also open with both front and rear-facing shooters, and give users a two-minute window to snap a pic. Content shared via the challenges will appear in the Stories tray.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because the functionality sounds nearly identical to BeReal, a selfie app marketed as a more candid and authentic alternative to mainstream social media platforms. The app, which originally launched in 2019, also prompts users to take a photo using their phone’s front and rear-facing cameras at a random time each day. The daily prompts also expire after two minutes, after which users can view all the photos shared by their friends that day.

It’s not yet clear if or when Instagram intends to launch the feature. An Instagram spokesperson described the feature as an “internal prototype” that’s “not testing externally.” But the fact that the company is testing the functionality suggests it’s at least considering replicating the app inside of its own service.
BeReal has a big following among Gen. Z, and has been rising in popularity over the last several months. BeReal is currently sitting in the top position in Apple’s App Store, ahead of both Instagram (No. 8) and Facebook (No. 18). It’s been among the ten most-popular free apps for much of this summer.
Mark Zuckerberg has said Meta’s future relies on appealing to young adults, who are increasingly spending their time on non-Meta platforms. And while TikTok is currently its top competitor, the company is known to closely monitor its rivals and has often copied features from other services. Instagram also recently added a new “Dual” setting to its in-app camera that mimics the shooting style popularized by BeReal.

Kuo: New 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro to Enter Production This Year and Might Still Have 5nm Chips
In a tweet, Kuo said that given TSMC’s guidance indicated that revenue from 3nm chip production will not begin until 2023, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models may still have chips based on TSMC’s latest 5nm process.
New 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with new processors will enter mass production in 4Q22. Given TSMC’s guidance that the 3nm will contribute revenue starting in 1H23, processors of 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models may still adopt the 5nm advanced node.

Kuo’s information seems to conflict with a report from Taiwan’s Commercial Times that claimed the M2 Pro chip may be Apple’s first 3nm chip.
While the situation is a little confusing right now, it’s clear from reports that TSMC plans to begin production of 3nm chips for Apple in the near future, so we’ll have to wait and see which Macs they appear in first. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple has M2-based MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro models in development.
The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were released in October 2021 and have 5nm-based M1 Pro and M1 Max chip options.

Netflix’s ad-supported tier might not play commercials during new movies
Netflix’s forthcoming ad-supported tier could include programming without commercials. According to Bloomberg, the company doesn’t plan to run ads during original movies, at least when they first premiere on the platform. In doing so, Netflix reportedly hopes to keep its service appealing to high-profile filmmakers who may find the idea of commercials interrupting their stories unappealing.
Content for children could also be free of ads. Netflix has reportedly told partners it won’t run commercials during original kids programming. Some of the company’s current agreements would not allow it to run ads during licensed content either. Netflix may feel serving commercials to kids would be more trouble than it’s worth. In 2019, Google paid $170 million for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act after the FTC found YouTube had illegally collected data from kids.
Bloomberg warns Netflix is still finalizing plans for its ad-supported tier, and the company’s strategy could change between now and when the service eventually launches. On that note, code recently found by developer Steve Moser suggested the new tier could also drop support for offline viewing. Netflix quickly responded to the rumor by pointing out it was still in the “early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad-supported option.”

A new tweet from game industry leaker The Snitch suggests that Pinocchio Dark Souls game Lies of P might be Game Pass bound, ahead of an expected appearance of the soulslike game at Gamescom. We first saw Lies of P gameplay in 2021 – the creepy-looking game from developer Neowiz sees you guiding Pinocchio on his “unrelenting journey to become human.”
The tweet in question (warning: flashing lights) comes from now-famed insider The Snitch, who has proven to be a very reliable source of upcoming game news in recent months, often leaking multiple titles ahead of major events. This latest tease is a video showing a simple green screen with white lights and sounds pulsing out a message in Morse code.
“The wise man say, you’ll find your way.” That’s the message, translated into English. The rap fans among you may recognise that line as a lyric from the Kanye ‘Ye’ West track ‘Pinocchio Story,’ which has led fans to surmise that the tease in question is related to news of the upcoming game. Lies of P is scheduled to appear at Gamescom 2022 in Germany with a demo on the show floor August 24 – 28.

You might sleep, and dream, like a spider
![A jumping spider hanging upside down from a silk thread](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/07ikaiw6myRcStkzCziUXOC/hero-image.jpg)
The next time you spot a spider hanging upside down in your apartment, it might actually be snoozing somewhat like humans.
Behavioral ecologist Daniela Rößler made this accidental finding when she first observed jumping spiders dangling in her laboratory in 2020. Rößler and her research team recently published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Rößler, a researcher at the University of Konstanz in Germany, originally set out to study predator-prey interactions in spiders. She used baby spiders for her experiment, and opportunistically filmed the animals at night using an infrared camera.
The spiders exhibited something like rapid eye movements (REM), a behavior we and many animals often experience when sleeping. During REM, activities in the body such as heart rate escalate, while the eyes remain closed and move rapidly.
While watching the spiders, the research team also observed the animals occasionally twitching their limbs, another classic REM behavior. Together, these findings suggest that a dreamy, sleep-like state could exist in spiders. There is already evidence fruit flies sleep. But this is the first time the REM pattern was documented in a jumping spider, said Rößler.
But what looks like sleep to us may or may not be sleep in spiders. Though the research team’s findings very much suggest that spiders do sleep, the evidence isn’t yet certain, noted Rößler.
“If we really want to understand the function of sleep, we need to look at it where it happens.”
As an extension of this research, Rößler is planning to conduct sleep studies in a field atmosphere as opposed to capturing spiders and studying them in an artificial lab environment. “If we really want to understand the function of sleep, we need to look at it where it happens,” she explained.
Yet the lab setting still produced compelling results. It is a well done study that has documented twitching in spiders, said Mark Blumberg, a professor at the University of Iowa who researches twitching and REM sleep in rats and human infants. Blumberg was not part of this newly published study.

Blumberg acknowledged that it’s tricky to study sleep in animals, because animals may experience sleep differently than us. “I agree with much of the study. I don’t agree with everything about it,” Blumberg told Mashable. The nervous system of a spider or fly is very different from that of a rat or a human, and so we cannot expect all features of sleep to be similar in spiders, he emphasized.
Rößler’s study touched on the possibility of spiders dreaming during sleep, thanks to the eye movement patterns the arachnids experienced in REM sleep. During REM sleep, vivid hallucinogenic dreams occur in humans. The new study raises the potential of studying the existence of visual dreams in spiders. But in Blumberg’s view, the dream connection is too uncertain, and unconvincing.
“I think we’re gonna find amazing things in the next couple years.”
For Rößler, dreaming in spiders also remains a big question. She hopes to better understand if humans can even fathom how a spider might dream, if they dream at all. “We always have this human bias in trying to understand the world,” she said.
There’s still a lot to unearth about sleep in animals. But more insights may be on the way. “I think we’re gonna find amazing things in the next couple years,” Rößler said.
