Apple Mini-LED Display Supplier Says Demand Shrinking As Rumors Suggest Transition to OLED in Coming Years
A new report from DigiTimes today cites industry sources within Epistar, which has been providing mini-LED displays to Apple for some time, saying that demand for mini-LED displays for use in consumer electronic devices is decreasing and that it expects demand for mini-LED displays for use in dashboards and displays for vehicles to spike in 2023.
A report last week suggested Samsung is now prioritizing the development of specific types of OLED displays that Apple plans to use in upcoming iPad Pro models. According to reports, Apple is expected to announce the first iPad Pro with an OLED display in 2024, which has sparked mini-LED suppliers to eye other applications for its displays, according to DigiTimes.
Alongside an OLED iPad Pro, Apple is also rumored to launch a 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024. Apple is also considering using an OLED panel in an upcoming iPhone SE refresh, but the company is debating between using an LCD or OLED display, according to reliable display analyst Ross Young.

Upcoming 11-Inch iPad Pro Rumored to Miss Out on Mini-LED Display
Replying in a tweet, Young reaffirmed previous rumors that the upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro will not gain the newer mini-LED display technology, meaning customers who want the more advanced display will need to revert to the larger 12.9-inch size.
Early rumors suggested that for the next iPad Pro update, Apple would expand the mini-LED display it introduced in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in April 2021 to also the smaller 11-inch size. The Liquid Retina XDR display in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro brings extreme dynamic range to the iPad Pro, offering a “stunning visual experience” with more true-to-life details and HDR.
The 11-inch iPad Pro display is an LED Liquid Retina Display that still has many of the same features as the 12.9-inch size but misses out on the extreme dynamic range, higher brightness, and darker blacks. Young said today he expects the upcoming 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros to feature the same displays as their respective current generation models.
The new iPad Pros are expected to be incremental updates, featuring a new chip and potentially new charging capabilities. The new models will be powered by the M2 Apple silicon chip, offering performance improvements compared to the M1 chip in the current models.
Reputable Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is not planning to hold a digital event for these new iPad Pros this month. Instead, Apple is expected to announce the new iPad Pro models in a “matter of days” through a press release and updates on its websites.

Apple Rumored to Launch 27-Inch Mini-LED Display in Q1 2023
In a tweet shared with super followers, Young said that Apple had “pushed” the debut of the monitor to Q1 2023. Young is presumably talking about the first calendar quarter of 2023, aka the months from January to March.
Young was a guest on the MacRumors podcast in July where he said that Apple was planning to launch the mini-LED display sometime in early 2023. Young initially expected Apple to introduce the display in June at WWDC, but he said in May that the launch had to be delayed until October because of design delays. Apple is also unable to meet the October goal, and Young believes the company is now aiming for 2023.
Throughout 2022, Apple has been dealing with supply constraints across products that include Macs and its displays, which may be the reason for the delay.
Apple’s upcoming display is said to feature mini-LED technology along with ProMotion support, allowing for up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The device is not expected to be a direct replacement for the Pro Display XDR, which is a larger, 6K display. It will instead be similar to the Apple Studio Display, which is a 27-inch monitor.
With ProMotion support and mini-LED technology, the rumored 27-inch display is expected to be more expensive than the Studio Display, which is priced starting at $1,599.
