Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s coolest new feature is named as a tribute to Nintendo’s pre-gaming past
We’re in the midst of a fairly exciting time in video games right now, where the history of gaming is such that there can be exciting looks back as well as leaps forward.
I’m not talking about remakes and remasters here, either – I’m just talking about those silly little winks and nods that just add texture to the culture of a medium. Things like when you hear the Wilhelm Scream or Tarzan Yell in TV or film; a nudge in your ribs with a knowing grin. For a long time, gaming generally felt too young to embrace this sort of thing, but now we have enough history behind us that it’s becoming delightfully more common.
One company that’s been able to do this more often than most, however, is Nintendo. Founded 133 years ago, Nintendo’s history stretches back long before Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to take a punt on digital games, with a history making real-world toys and playing cards. It follows that occasionally Nintendo dips back into that history for a reference or two – and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a delightful new one.

A couple of bug researchers have named a cockroach after a Pokemon
A new cockroach just dropped, and the pair of entomologists that discovered it have named it after a bug-type Pokemon.
Pokemon, obviously, are not real. That’s probably a good thing considering the animal rights issues that would be at play, but it would be nice to have a pet Grubbin, they’re just such a funny lil critter. While Pokemon might not be real, that doesn’t mean there aren’t living creatures with Pokemon names, as just recently a newly documented cockroach was named after Pheromosa, a bug-fighting type Pokemon (yes I know it’s technically an Ultra Beast, go away).
As reported by The Straits Times, the species, called Nocticola pheromosa, was discovered in a forested nature reserve in Singapore. While it was first observed in 2016, it wasn’t until now, after dissecting specimens and comparing them to other species of cockroach, that Nocticola pheromosa was labelled its own species.

Keanu Reeves Now Has A Fungi-Killing Substance Named After Him
Keanu Reeves is known for playing a deadly killer in the John Wick series, and his reputation helped encourage scientists to name a deadly new bacteria after him.
Researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology discovered a new substance that can help kill fungal diseases and fungi that affect humans. The name? “Keanumycins,” which is named after Reeves.
“The lipopeptides kill so efficiently that we named them after Keanu Reeves because he, too, is extremely deadly in his roles,” researcher Sebastian Götze explained.
