HARBINGER ‘OWL’ Encounter Shared by Native Woman in Oklahoma
A native Kiowa-Tanoan man living in Oklahoma recalls a story of an encounter that his grandmother had with an ‘owl.’ Could the sighting have been a death harbinger, as stated in native lore?
The following account was found on a paranormal encounters forum:
“My grandma recently passed and I wanted to share a story she used to tell. Now some of the supernatural or paranormal stories weren’t really that scary, more mythical, like the stories both she and my dad would tell of little people called ‘Minapeds’ or little people. The name might be a rough spelling as it was in Kiowa-Tanoan and I don’t know the spelling of it, but that’s how it sounded in English.
There was one story she’d always tell when we drove the old road around Mount Scott and Lake Lawtonka near Medicine Park in Oklahoma. In the late 1960s before my dad was born, she lived close to the tribe in Carnegie, but still lived closer to Medicine Park. Usually, she would go to Carnegie during the week for groceries as she worked nights at her job during the weekend, but on the odd occasion, she’d go to Medicine Park to get whatever groceries we needed that weekend that she had either forgotten or didn’t get enough of. The reason she did is that there were no stores in Carnegie that were open late in the night but there was one in Medicine Park.
She then told us that the mountain we drove around was sacred to the tribe, and were promised that no road would be built there by the government in the 1900s. But, of course, they build roads there anyway so when driving you can get a good view of the mountain and the lake. Because of this, it is now haunted by a spirit that’s aggressive, especially if you drive at night.
Now a lot of people can agree that native creatures and supernatural stories were just made up, but this was the first real event that made her believe more than what she thought was real regarding native “ghost stories.”
This particular night the clouds covered the moon and stars so it was darker than usual. It didn’t bother her much as she can still see the road. But around halfway through the trip, her car stopped. It just turned off by itself. She thought it was weird but probably just something wrong with the car. She went to turn it on and nothing. So she tried a second time. Immediately after attempting to start it a second time she said she heard something ‘woosh’ above the car. Then she tried to start it a third time and it worked. But in the span of about 4 seconds, she said she saw a large black figure in the middle of the road, not 6 feet away from the car. When she noticed it she said it reacted to the lights shining as it quickly turned its head and showed its big glowing eyes. It then flew up into the air never to be seen again. She just called it the ‘owl’ but I and my brother prefer the name ‘owlman’ better, kind of a joke as we’re obsessed with the silly cryptids.
But the reason she claims this was a significant encounter was that owls in our tribe are taboo and are said to be bad omens. If you see one, it means someone close to you is going to die very soon. And about a year after when my dad was less than a year old, they found out my grandpa had cancer. It would be a little over a decade before he died from it but the owl and the bad news were not coincidental.
Now, do I believe it? Yes, I do. My grandma was dead set on it being a true story and my dad believe it was too, probably because he also had stories of paranormal stuff happening to him. He said it himself, “There are things out there you can’t even imagine. Think of how many times things sounded fake until it was found or had happened.”
If I ever get with my dad again I’ll ask him more about those kinds of things and maybe post them. But for now, what do you think of this encounter? I know it didn’t happen to me but it happened to someone who was very close. Plus I never see native paranormal encounters other than skinwalker or what have you.” B
NOTE: I have experienced (and know others who have also experienced) strange owl encounters in the past. Yes, I do believe that it foretold the death of someone close to me. The humanoid owls, in Kiowa tradition (as well as in other tribes), are known as ‘stikini.’ That moniker was also brought up during our investigation of ‘owl humanoids’ seen in the Chicagoland area, as well as the term ‘lechuza,’ which is more prevalent in the South Texas / Rio Grande region by resident Hispanic people. NATIVE AMERICAN ‘WAR DRUMS’ Heard by Western Pennsylvania Hikers
A western Pennsylvania resident and his girlfriend were geocaching in a PA State Game Land. As they were hiking through the woods, they both began to hear unexplained rhythmic drumming.
I received the following account from Kyle & Cam at Expanded Perspectives.
“I’ve got an incident of hearing drumming in the woods. To this day, one of the oddest occurrences I’ve ever experienced. In the summer of 2014, my girlfriend at the time and I decided to go Geocaching. I had gone out a few times before with friends and really enjoyed it. She was new to the whole concept. So I looked up a geocache close by, logged the coordinates into my GPS, and off we went.
This geocache took us out into the State Game Lands in Western Pennsylvania. So we parked in a designated parking lot and began our hike into the woods. It was the afternoon of a hot and humid Pennsylvania day and the location was only supposed to be about half a mile from the car.
As we are following the GPS down a clearing with woods about 100 feet to either side of us we began to hear drumming to our left. Kind of far off but it still seemed like we should be able to see the origin of the sound. I asked if she heard it too, which thankfully she did. We both thought it was pretty strange but after about 10 seconds it faded out and we began our search again.
After walking about 50 yards further, the drumming returned, louder this time. It sounded like Native American war drums. We stopped and peered into the woods, we saw absolutely nothing. The only excuse I could think of is that maybe there’s a Boy Scout camp nearby, which is a flimsy explanation at best. We listened for a few seconds, then I grabbed her hand, did a 180, and power walked back through the clearing, the drums fading with every step. We didn’t say anything to each other on the hike back, just got in the car and left.
As we drove down the dirt back road lined with trees, I looked for anything that could be the source of the drumming. There wasn’t another living soul in the area until we reached the main highway.” T
Witness notes: This https://youtu.be/u8VX2ot6xs4 is the closest match to what we heard.
NOTE: I have been made aware of a similar phenomenon reported in PA State Game Land #244 a while back. This is in Jefferson County, PA. The Iroquois Nation dominated the region in the 17th century. These were predominantly made up of, what was referred to by the settlers as the Mohawk. Their great chiefs were Cornplanter and Guyasutha. This tribe was the most numerous, powerful, and warlike of the Iroquois nation, and comprised the Indians of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Lon

Native Instruments pads out its Komplete 14 suite with some welcome new toys
Komplete, Native Instruments’ flagship music production bundle, has a little bit of everything. That’s always been part of its appeal. It’s pricey, but you get monstersynths, a top-notch drum sampler, a virtual guitar rig and Kontakt — which is also a sampler, but calling it one seems incredibly reductive. Native Instruments is still one of the biggest names in the music software world, but it’s an increasingly crowded and competitive market. And much of it is moving towards a subscriptionmodel (even Native Instruments). So this year the company is adding some new software in hopes that customers will come back for at least one more big-ticket purchase.
Komplete 14 is the first version to be released since Native Instruments (NI) joined Soundwide, a collection of brands including Izotope and Plugin Alliance, among others. As such, one of the biggest additions to the Komplete library (at least in the $599 Standard version and higher) is Izotope’s Ozone 10 Standard. This mastering plug in has legions of fans thanks to its powerful feature set and simple interface. But for many, the biggest selling point is it’s AI-powered mastering assistance. Many amateur musicians (myself included) rely on Ozone to master their tracks. You simply play the loudest bit of your song, click a button, and the plugin will suggest a starting point for mastering including compression and EQ. You can then accept the settings, tweak them to your liking or toss them and start from scratch.
The new partnership also allowed Native Instruments to beef up the bundle with a handful of smaller items from Plugin Alliance and Brainworx like bx_Oberhausen, bx_Crispytuner and LO-FI-AF. None of these instruments or effects individually are likely to convince you one way or another that Komplete’s more expensive versions are worth the outlay. But I don’t know anyone who is going to complain about having too many plugins.
The only issue is it might not be immediately clear to many users how to get access to those. They’re not in the Native Access manager. Instead you’ll have to go to your products and serials list on the NI site to get the “Plugin Alliance Bundle for Komplete 14” code. Then you’ll head on over to Plugin Alliance and redeem it the code and download a separate plugin manager. Hopefully at some point the two platforms will be integrated to remove the addition steps.
The big centerpiece of Komplete, as always, is Kontakt. The new version — seven — isn’t a giant departure for this industry stalwart. The browser has been updated for better compatibility with HiDPI displays and improved search and filtering tools. The factory library has also been overhauled to take advantage of the graphical overhaul and for better sound. The process of building your own Kontakt instruments has also been simplified with improved creator tools.
Kontakt 7 may not be a significant change from version six, but if you spring for the more expensive versions, like the $1,199 Komplete Ultimate or $1,799 Komplete Collector’s Edition, you do get some unique and powerful expansions like Lores, Ashlight, Kinetic Toys and, one of my personal favorites, Piano Colors. The latter combines samples of a grand piano, various synths and textures, along with effects and modulation tools to create complex sounds that walk the line between organic and synthetic.
The one piece of bad news here is that Kontakt 7, while it is technically included in Komplete 14, isn’t available yet and wont ship until some point in October. Komplete 14 is available now starting at $199 for the basic Komplete Selects package, and going all the way up to $1,799 for Komplete Collector’s Edition.

Human-Like Entity Summons Native Boy. What Was It?
A native Oklahoma boy is playing with his sister and cousins. While he is hiding he observes an unexplained human-like being that was calling his name. If not a skinwalker, what was it?
I recently came across an interesting post:
“I live in Oklahoma. Nearly everyone in my county has indigenous blood from many different tribes. You’re actually a bit of an oddity here if you don’t have any. We aren’t Navajo, and Oklahoma isn’t Navajo territory. I don’t know what else it could’ve been, and I didn’t know what else to title this, but Jesus Christ I have never been more scared.
Many years ago I was walking with my two cousins and older sister in the woods around November. It was raining and had gotten dark a lot faster than any of us were expecting. We had flashlights and lenient parents, so we thought we were fine. We were goofing off, playing some game, probably pretending we were squirrels or something. Then we started to play hide and seek.
I ran pretty far away from my cousins and sister, as my sister was It. I hid behind some trees, crouched down, and waited for my sister to find me. I was alone in this part of the woods, my cousins had taken off together to hide in the opposite direction.
About ten minutes into the game, I hear footsteps crunching leaves pretty close to me. I giggled and crouched down further, thinking it was my sister. The weird part was that it was coming from BEHIND me, which would mean my sister would have had to walk right past me to get to where the footsteps were coming from. I obviously hadn’t considered this. I was just a kid. Anyways, I heard footsteps. They circled around me for a bit, and then stopped suddenly. I heard my sister’s voice clearly, she said my name. The voice was weird, cold, and a bit hoarse. Goosebumps immediately formed on my arms.
I stood up, not really caring about the game anymore. I’ve always been the easily frightened of my family members, and I thought she was using that to her advantage to draw me out of hiding. Well. It worked. I wavered between running to find my cousins or running up to my sister to beat her up for scaring me. Then she said my name again and demanded I come over to where she was. I could see her when I squinted. She was about 50 yards away, standing decidedly limp.
I was about five seconds from obeying her when my sister grabbed me from behind and yelled “Boo” really loudly in my ear. I screamed and started to cry, just bawled in her arms. She was really freaked out and asked me what was wrong.
I told her about the “person,” and she was really bewildered. She had no idea what I was talking about. She had already found my little cousins, and one of them had snitched on me and told her where I was hiding.
I had never been more grateful for such a betrayal. The voice stopped and the thing disappeared after my sister found me, and we went back home after that. I still haven’t been back in the woods near my grandma, and no one believes me when I tell them about it.” LL

New Single & Video: Native Harrow – As It Goes
NASA’s Nicole Aunapu Mann will be the first Native American woman to visit space
NASA is breaking new ground for astronauts. As Indian Country Todayreports, the agency recently confirmed that Marine Corps Col. Nicole Aunapu Mann will be the first Native American woman to travel to space. The Wailacki tribe member will serve as the mission commander for the SpaceX-powered Crew-5 mission heading to the International Space Station as soon as September 29th. When she arrives, Mann will be ISS Expedition 68’s flight engineer during a six-month stay.
The Crew-5 mission will also ferry NASA’s Josh Cassada, Japan’s Koichi Wakata and Russia’s Anna Kikina to the ISS. Chickasaw Nation member John Herrington was the first Native American of any gender to visit space, flying aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2002.
Mann has a background well-suited to spaceflight. She started her career as a Navy aviator and has flown the F/A-18 Hornet while supporting missions operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. She also earned her master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford. NASA chose Mann as one of eight astronaut candidates in 2013. That group has since become influential, producing influential figures like Anne McClain, Jessica Meir and Crew Dragon pilot Victor Glover. Some of them, including Mann, have made NASA’s shortlist for the first crewed Artemis missions to the Moon.
For Mann, this first spaceflight isn’t just historic. In her interview with ICT, she saw the trip as smashing “barriers” for Native American children who didn’t think they could become astronauts. It won’t be surprising if more follow her before long.
