Naughty Dog is holding off on announcing its next game to encourage a better work-life balance
In a recent interview, Naughty Dog co-president and The Last of Us Director Neil Druckmann explained why the studio hasn’t revealed its next game yet.
Speaking to ComicBook about the upcoming live-action take on The Last of Us from HBO, Druckmann spoke about how Naughty Dog has announced some of its games too early. “You’re right, we did announce Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2 way in advance, but that actually caused a little bit of the work-life balance issues that we’ve sometimes had at the studio,” Druckmann told ComicBook.
“By delaying that announcement a bit, we could play with the schedule more and we’re more conscious now about how we’re approaching production. So there’s our [The Last of Us] multiplayer project and there’s another project that I will not say anything about that’s beyond that that we’re also very much excited for.”
Naughty Dog shares The Last of Us multiplayer teaser image, thinks there’s “more story to tell” in the future
Naughty Dog doesn’t seem to be finished with The Last of Us franchise, if a quote from Neil Druckmann is anything to go by.
Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding HBO’s The Last of Us series, the studio’s co-president said there is still “more story to tell” within the franchise.
While this isn’t confirmation of The Last of Us Part 3 or anything, it sounds reassuring, and also adds to comments made by Druckmann in 2020 that confirmed a story outline was already written for a third game.
Naughty Dog’s next game will be “structured more like a TV show”
In a recent article with The New Yorker, Naughty Dog’s co-president, Neil Druckmann, and The Last of Us’ HBO series showrunner, Craig Mazin, discuss the evolution of video games. Particularly, they talk about how The Last of Us came to be adapted into a TV show, and what’s next for Naughty Dog.
There’s initially a lot of discussion regarding the curse of video game adaptations. Let’s be real, video games adapted for the silver screen have never done all that well, unless you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. “Hopefully, this will put that video-game curse to bed,” Druckmann said regarding The Last of Us’ TV series adaptation. Mazin, on the other hand, suggests with a laugh that, “it’s gonna make it worse.”
“Sometimes adaptations haven’t worked because the source material is not strong enough. Sometimes they haven’t worked because the people making it don’t understand the source material,” says Druckmann. However, Druckmann thinks the relationship between video games and adaptations of them has shifted somewhat, and for the better.

New San Diego-based PlayStation studio working with Naughty Dog on a “beloved franchise”
A new PlayStation studio has been formed by Sony and currently, it’s working with Naughty Dog.
This is according to a job listing noticed by VGC, which states the unnamed San Diego-based studio is working with the Uncharted developer on a “beloved franchise.”
The job listing is for a summer 2023 internship and states the following:
Modern Warfare 2’s campaign eases off the bombast and takes inspiration from Naughty Dog
^Stay tuned for our review chat with loads and loads of gorgeous 1440p gameplay.
Modern Warfare II (2022)’s campaign takes place around two years after the events of the first game and barely follows up on them, choosing instead to carve its own path with the same set of characters and world state, which culminates in a surprisingly innovative set of missions which contain a lot of downtime full of quiet moments and introspection.
It also does a bunch of clever things with the gameplay: a memorable stealth section featuring an injured Soap has a very Naughty Dog feel about it. Sneaking around and hyper-realistic location, scavenging for crafting parts, deftly avoiding checkpoint after checkpoint of chattering guards.
