iOS 16.1 tweaks the battery percentage yet again – but I liked how it was before
Apple listened to your complaints and is changing iOS 16’s battery percentage icon
Ever since the world got its first look at iOS 16’s reintroduced battery percentage indicator at the start of last month, people have voiced strong opinions about the icon. Many, including Engadget Deputy Editor Cherlynn Low, felt Apple could have done a better job with it. In its current iteration, the icon remains static – displaying only a percentage – until your iPhone’s battery depletes below 20 percent capacity. It’s a design decision that makes the indicator less useful than it ought to be since in most cases you need to look closely to see how much battery you have left.
There we go: Apple has tweaked the design of the battery percentage icon in iOS 16.1 beta 2. It now shows the proper charge level 🎉 pic.twitter.com/15tvFUCaPx

Thankfully, Apple is working on an improved version of the icon. Earlier today, the company released the second iOS 16.1 beta (via MacRumors). Among other things, the update introduces a tweak to the battery percentage indicator. Now, instead of the icon only turning red when your iPhone’s battery dips below 20 percent charge, it will also gradually deplete as the battery does. It’s a small change, but one that improves usability.
Beta two also includes a tweak to the lock screen. When you plug your phone to charge, a battery percentage indicator will briefly appear above the time, bringing back a feature from iOS 15. On the iPhone 14 Pro, you’ll also see one appear within the Dynamic Island. The next version of iOS 16 does not have a release date yet. We’ll also note here that Apple could further tweak some of the changes found in beta two.
iOS 16.1 Adds Battery Percentage to iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 Status Bar
Battery percent was not present on iPhones that have Face ID in iOS 15 because of the lack of space on either side of the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera hardware, but Apple’s updated iOS 16 design adds the specific battery level to the battery icon, providing a better idea of battery status at a glance.
With this update, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 users can see their battery percentage in the status bar, and battery percentage is officially available on the iPhone XR and later. Devices without a Face ID notch always display the battery percentage as well.

The iPhone 14 Pro could bring back the old battery percentage indicator
The iPhone 14 Pro is rumored to revive the classic battery percentage indicator (yes, the one with the percentage and the battery level icon side-by-side), according to an alleged mockup of the device’s interface shared with MacRumors. This means Pro users may not get stuck with the hideous, and sometimes unreadable, indicator that Apple’s testing in the iOS 16 beta, which shows the percentage inside the battery icon.
But Apple’s current version of the indicator on newer devices takes the form of a battery icon (without a percentage) that shows a visual representation of how much power your phone has left. This was first introduced in the iPhone X due to a lack of space caused by the notch, and forces you to swipe down to the Control…
Latest iOS 16 Beta Updates Battery Percentage Options in Low Power Mode
When using Low Power mode, it is now possible to turn off the percentage indicator that is shown in the status bar, something that was not able to be done in the prior beta. The change was first noted by 9to5Mac, and it is useful for those who do not like the battery icon in the status bar to show the percent.
iOS 16 beta 5:
iOS 16 beta 6:
In iOS 16 beta 5, activating Low Power mode automatically turned on the battery percent feature even if it was not toggled on, with no option to have Low Power mode on without showing battery percent information. That’s no longer the case with iOS 16 beta 6, and the two toggles are no longer linked.
It is now possible to turn on Low Power mode while also turning off the battery percent reading for the battery icon.
Battery percent was a standard iPhone status bar feature until the launch of the iPhone X in 2017, which saw it removed due to space constraints caused by the notch needed for the TrueDepth camera system hardware. Until the fifth iOS 16 beta, the status bar showed a visual representation of battery level, and viewing the specific battery percentage required swiping into the Control Center or checking the battery widget.
With the fifth beta, Apple added the option to turn on battery percent, with the number overlaying the battery icon. The number replaces the typical battery icon that shifts over time as the battery drains, and because of that, it has not been popular with some users.
Battery percent is available on the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. It is not available on the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, iPhone 12 mini, or iPhone 13 mini.

iOS 16 Beta 6: New Battery Percentage Icon Still Not Enabled on Some iPhones
Since the release of the iPhone X in 2017, and on every iPhone with a notch since, battery percentage has only been visible in Control Center by swiping down on the top-right corner of the display. Apple made headlines last week when it finally made battery percentage visible in the status bar again on iPhones with a notch, eliminating the need to swipe down, but the feature is not supported on all iPhones in the latest iOS 16 betas.
The new icon includes the battery percentage within the icon rather than to the left of it. The white battery icon remains completely filled in until the battery reaches 20% or lower, at which point a fifth of the icon turns red and the rest of the icon becomes translucent. The icon’s current implementation has proven to be controversial, but it’s important to remember that iOS 16 is still in beta and subject to additional changes.
It’s unclear why the new battery percentage icon is not available on some iPhone models with a notch, but the excluded models are either “mini” iPhones or have an LCD display instead of an OLED display. As mentioned, iOS 16 is still in beta testing, so it’s possible that Apple could expand the feature in a future beta release.
Apple is expected to release iOS 16 to all users with an iPhone 8 or newer in September.

iOS 16 Beta 5 Adds Battery Percentage to iPhone Status Bar
Five years after Apple introduced the iPhone X with a notch, and relegated the battery percentage indicator to Control Center, Apple has finally added the battery percentage back to the iPhone’s status bar in the fifth developer beta of iOS 16 released earlier this week.
The new battery icon is available on most iPhone models with a notch. The battery percentage appears within the battery icon to save space, but not everyone is a fan of this design.

It appears that Apple’s annual iPhone event won’t be a fully in-person event again this year, as Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman this week claimed that Apple has started to produce a pre-recorded video for the event. It’s possible that Apple will still invite media to the event for in-person hands-on demos with new products.
Unsurprisingly, Apple will likely unveil its iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 product lineups at the September event, and at least five other products are expected to be announced this year.
iPhone 14 Pro Models Rumored to Be More Expensive
Apple plans to increase the prices of iPhone 14 Pro models compared to iPhone 13 Pro models, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

USB-C AirPods Expected to Launch in 2023
Apple plans to switch to USB-C charging cases for all AirPods models in 2023, but the second-generation AirPods Pro launching later this year may still have a Lightning charging case, according to a recent tweet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

‘It’s Time for Apple to Fix Texting’ Says New Android Website
Google’s Android team has launched a new “Get the Message” website that again calls on Apple to adopt Rich Communication Services (RCS) alongside iMessage in the Messages app on iPhone.
Google has been pushing Apple to switch from SMS to RCS for months now, with no response from Apple. RCS would allow for read receipts, audio messages, and more for conversations between iPhones and Android smartphones.

Batteries App Brings iOS 16’s New Battery Percentage Icon to the Mac
As on the iPhone, the battery percentage appears inside the battery icon on the Mac for a consistent appearance across iOS and macOS. The existing battery indicator on the Mac can be disabled in the System Settings app in the Battery menu.
Starting with the fifth developer beta of iOS 16, it is once again possible to view an iPhone’s battery percentage in the status bar without having to swipe down to open Control Center. The feature is available on most iPhones with a notch, with the exception of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 mini, standard iPhone 11, and iPhone XR. It’s possible that Apple may expand the icon to additional iPhones in later iOS 16 betas.
Apple had removed the ability to view battery percentage in the status bar when the iPhone X was released in 2017 due to the notch and only brought it back now.
Batteries for Mac is a useful app that lets you view battery percentages for an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, Beats, and other Bluetooth devices in the macOS menu bar. The app can also provide low battery notifications for the devices on the Mac. The app is priced at $8.99 in the U.S. and is also available as part of the Setapp subscription bundle.
