Phil Spencer Talks Activision Deal And Xbox’s Policy On Exclusive Games
In a new interview, Xbox boss Phil Spencer discussed the reasons behind the Activision Blizzard acquisition and the company’s policy on console exclusivity.
Speaking to XboxOn, Phil Spencer claimed that Xbox is focused on June’s showcase, but other news will be on the way. Spencer also mentioned that Everwild, from developer Rare, is still in development. When asked about the response to the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Spencer said, “For the Xbox community, there’s a lot of anticipation… for the industry, and I think this is right, there’s questions about, well, what does this mean… how is this going to affect competition?”
He re-affirmed that the Activision Blizzard acquisition was never primarily about Call of Duty, but was about building the company’s mobile portfolio. “[Mobile] is the largest gaming platform on the planet…for us, the logic really started from how do we gain more capability on mobile?” He commented on Call of Duty itself. He said, “we want to increase the places where people can play Call of Duty. Kind of like Minecraft.” He also affirmed that certain modes or cosmetics in Call of Duty will not be exclusive to Xbox.

Punxsutawney Phil is terrible at Groundhog Day weather predictions
It’s Groundhog Day! The odd little annual tradition where Americans and Canadians look to a furry little woodchuck to predict the weather.
While there’s no real harm in our silly Groundhog Day tradition (unless of course it’s the year 2014 and you’re Staten Island Chuck meeting then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio), it’s astonishing just how wrong the day’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, has been in his predictions over the years.
According to the Stormfax Weather Almanac, which tracks Phil’s predictions, the groundhog has only been right 39 percent of the time over the past 136 years. 39 percent. That’s abysmal! This is your god, western Pennsylvania?
First, a simple overview of the Groundhog Day rules: If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow when he first emerges from his burrow, we get six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, we’re in for an early Spring.
So, Phil’s got two choices. A 50 percent chance of guessing it right. Yet his record of correctly forecasting the weather has been terrible. We’re better off going with whatever the opposite of Punxsutawney Phil’s predictions are.
Phil has been doing this since 1887 (as a side note: damn, he’s old). As of 2023, Phil has 137 predictions under his belt. Unfortunately, 9 of those predictions have been lost to history. But, that means we have 128 predictions to look at here. Phil has seen his shadow and predicted 6 more weeks of winter a total of 108 times. He’s predicted an early Spring only 20 times.
What about this year? For 2023, Phil has gone with his comfortable 6 more weeks of winter prediction after seeing his shadow. On the flip side, his biggest competitor, Staten Island Chuck, just predicted an early Spring for a whopping 8th year in a row.
Punxsutawney Phil vs Staten Island Chuck
Who will be right this time? If I was a betting man, I would not go with the Nate Silver of Punxsutawney, PA. I’d go with Chuck who has an incredible 80 percent accuracy rate since he’s been in the game starting in 1981. Not bad for a rodent who was dropped by NYC Mayor de Blasio in 2014 and passed away a few days later.
Regardless of who is right this time around, I think we can all agree that Phil and Chuck are already having a better year than Quebec’s groundhog Fred la Marmotte. The Canadians who put together that Groundhog Day event brought everyone out this morning and waited right before Fred was to come out and make his prediction to drop the ultimate surprise: Fred’s dead.
Happy Groundhog Day!
Phil Spencer says Microsoft will continue to ‘support and grow’ Halo amid 343 layoffs
Xbox head Phil Spencer says Microsoft remains committed to the Halo franchise and developer 343 Industries. In an interview following this week’s Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct showcase, Spencer told IGN “the heart and soul of Halo is with 343 and the team’s that there, and I have the utmost confidence in the team that’s there and leading and the plan that they have going forward.”
Spencer’s comments come after 343 was reportedly “hit hard” by Microsoft’s recently announced company-wide layoffs. The number of employees Microsoft let go at the studio is unknown, but according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Halo Infinite’s campaign team saw significant cuts. The news prompted 343 to publish a brief statement on the layoffs last weekend. “Halo and Master Chief are here to stay,” studio head Pierre Hintze said. “343 Industries will continue to developer Halo now and in the future, including epic stories, multiplayer, and more of what makes Halo great.”
According to Spencer, the layoffs were an effort by Microsoft to position 343 for the future. “What we’re doing now is we want to make sure that leadership team is set up with the flexibility to build the plan that they need to go build,” he said. “Halo will remain critically important to what Xbox is doing, and 343 is critically important to the success of Halo.”
Frustratingly, Spencer wouldn’t discuss the franchise’s future beyond the broad strokes he offered. He declined to comment on whether Microsoft still has a 10-year support plan in place for Halo Infinite. “I’m going to let 343 talk about the plans that they have right now,” Spencer said when asked about the subject. However, he did offer reassurances for Halo fans left worrying about what comes next for Master Chief. “I expect that we’ll be continuing to support and grow Halo for as long as the Xbox is a platform for people to play.” The rest of the interview is well worth reading if you’re an Xbox fan. The piece covers a lot of ground, including the console’s lackluster 2022.
Xbox head Phil Spencer discusses recent Microsoft layoffs, Activision Blizzard acquisition, and more
In a recent interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer touched on a range of topics to do with the platform, including the recent layoffs.
Earlier this month, Microsoft laid off roughly 10,000 employees to supposedly prepare for slower revenue growth, and Xbox owned studios like Halo developer 343 Industries and Bethesda were affected too. Spencer recently spoke with IGN about what lies in Xbox’s future for the year, but also spoke of the layoffs.
“As somebody who’s been on Xbox for an awful long time, it’s always a challenge whenever a coworker…a team member is not going to be on the journey with us going forward,” Spencer told IGN. “I take to heart the impact on individuals. I see my commitment and my responsibility as the person who heads the business to create a safe place where people can do their best work. And obviously, we have reductions for certain people there. I haven’t succeeded at that.”
