The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me – First-Look Preview
Spooky storytelling makes The Dark Pictures Anthology a cornerstone for fans of choose-your-own-narrative-style gameplay often seen in games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead series and Life Is Strange, but with a bit more horror involved. If you’re not familiar, this anthology from Supermassive Games includes Man of Medan, House of Ashes, and The Quarry, all of which act as individual episodes within a larger season, and the upcoming fourth and final entry – called The Devil In Me – looks like it could be taking the series to some truly horrific heights. If it does, it’ll be via its setting, a recreation of the terrifying “Murder Castle” once used by H. H. Holmes to ensnare his many victims. In it, you’ll guide five distinct characters through this grotesque, Saw-inspired labyrinth while searching for clues, solving puzzles, and making story choices that could determine who lives or dies.
While I didn’t get to try The Devil In Me for myself, I did get the opportunity to check out a 30-minute hands-off demo showcasing the newly added features that may surprise returning fans, such as new exploration mechanics that could make The Devil In Me feel even more streamlined than its predecessors.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me centers around five different characters – Kate, Charlie, Erin, Jamie, and Mark – each working for the fictional Lonnit Entertainment Company in an effort to create a documentary about a supposed reenactment of H. H. Holmes “Murder Castle.” What makes this interesting is that each of the five characters is designed as a playable protagonist, and according to Game Director Tom Heaton, anyone can live or die depending on your choices. I even got to see a character’s death play out after a series of choices went wrong, and it does make The Devil In Me appear quite multifaceted in the number of ways you can approach it. Aside from the schmoozy businessman Charlie, whose unique ability is to – no joke – open locks with his platinum credit card, I’m certainly not familiar with these characters enough to describe their personality traits, but Supermassive promises that each character has a bit more to them than immediately meets the eye, and that could make it worth checking out different outcomes in different playthroughs.
Exploration mechanics are visibly more action-oriented in The Devil In Me. The decrepit hotel that The Devil In Me takes place in is full of rickety and uneven terrain – and potentially plenty of nooks and crannies to find secrets in – and that all needs a little extra bit of dexterity to move through. As such, it makes sense that there are more cues to jump onto ledges, crawl under objects, shimmy around hazards, and just do more things within the environment in general. It looks more interactive and cinematic as a result, and that could aid in making you want to spend more time exploring these environments, since it sounds like there are plenty of different avenues through which you can solve The Devil In Me’s supposedly seven-hour storyline.
That said, it seems like there was a ton of attention paid to H. H. Holmes himself, and this extends to the immaculately-detailed “Murder Castle” hotel, which appears equally beautiful and deadly with gritty, almost haunting lighting in each scene. The villain has placed plenty of Saw-like traps around the building, one of which gruesomely chained two mannequins to an actual saw and, well, it isn’t the most pleasant thing to describe. But it tracks pretty accurately to the actual traps that were once discovered in H. H. Holmes’ very real and very gruesome hotel during the late 19th century. For that reason, history buffs might be particularly interested in checking this one out.
The Devil in Me game director on creating impactful horror, serial killers, and The Dark Pictures Anthology
When a group of keen filmmakers is adamant on securing the second season of their true-crime show, the finale of their first season needs to go out with a bang. The issue, however, is that they’re creatively bankrupt, until a mysterious architect approaches them with an irresistible offer. The Devil in Me, releasing this autumn from Supermassive Games, follows the crew as they investigate the crimes of notorious serial killer, H. H. Holmes, over a century later.
The Devil in Me takes you to a brand-new location with an all-new cast, then takes inspiration from of the most infamous serial killers of all time, and introduces new gameplay mechanics to boot. It seems that any fan of Dark Pictures or even true crime is undoubtedly going to enjoy the game, but we sat down with The Devil in Me’s game director, Tom Heaton, to ask exactly what he thinks we should all be looking forward to and why.
First, can you tell us what you’re most excited about players experiencing in The Devil in Me compared to what else they’ve seen in The Dark Pictures Anthology?
Leaked graphic pictures of Kobe Bryant and Gigi’s bodies ‘found on phones of EIGHT cops’ after helicopter crash
EIGHT officers from the LA County Sheriff’s Department took photos of the grisly crash site where Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were killed, a lawsuit claims.
The deputies allegedly snapped photos of the dead children, their parents and coaches, according to the lawsuit filed last year by Vanessa Bryant in Los Angeles.
Vanessa Bryant filed a lawsuit against the LAPD Sheriff for inappropriate photos of Kobe and Gianna’s death site in 2020[/caption]
The photos reportedly show the bodies of the NBA legend, his daughter, and seven others who died in the crash[/caption]
Kobe‘s wife sued the LAPD sheriff after the graphic photos showed the remains of the NBA star and eight others who died in the helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.
“No fewer than 8 sheriff’s deputies at the crash site, pulled out their personal cell phones and snapped photos of the dead children, parents and coaches,” says the lawsuit, which TMZ obtained a copy of.
“The deputies took these photos for their own personal gratification.”
Los Angeles County has now hit back in new court documents asking Vanessa to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether or not she’s actually been as distressed as she’s claimed.
USA Today reports the filings read: “Despite putting their mental condition front and center in this case, Plaintiffs refuse to submit to independent medical examinations (IMEs).
“…The County brings this motion to compel IMEs of the Plaintiffs, which are necessary to evaluate the existence, extent and nature of Plaintiffs’ alleged emotional injuries.
“Plaintiffs cannot claim that they are suffering from ongoing depression, anxiety and severe emotional distress and then balk at having to support their claims.”

Vanessa’s attorneys slammed the request, calling out the county for trying to force the evaluations on all of the surviving family, including “four teenagers, a 10-year-old child, and a 5-year-old kindergartener.”
The lawyers added in their response filings: “The County has resorted to scorched-earth discovery tactics designed to bully Plaintiffs into abandoning their pursuit of accountability.”
Vanessa’s original lawsuit filing also alleges the crash photos were a topic of discussion within the sheriff’s department, as deputies allowed their colleagues to see the photos that had no investigative purpose.
A deputy showed off the crash site pics to a woman he was trying to impress at a bar, the lawsuit claims.
That’s when a bartender overheard the conversation and blew the whistle by reporting the information to the sheriff’s department.

LAPD Sheriff Alex Villanueva allegedly didn’t tell the victims’ families about the images, Vanessa claims in her filing[/caption]
In Vanessa’s lawsuit, she claims Sheriff Alex Villanueva attempted to cover up the misconduct by going to the department substation that responded to the crash and told deputies they’d get off scot-free if they deleted the photos.
Villanueva allegedly didn’t tell the victims’ families about the images – their loved ones only learned of the scandal in the media after the story broke, according to the lawsuit.
The suit claims the Sheriff never gave the family clear answers, and now Vanessa lives in constant fear that the devastating photos will leak to the public.

“Ms. Bryant feels ill at the thought of strangers gawking at images of her deceased husband and child, and she lives in fear that she or her children will one day confront horrific images of their loved ones online,” the documents said.
On August 24, 2022, a unanimous jury determined that Los Angeles County must pay Vanessa $16million over the photos.
The jury also awarded $15million to Vanessa’s co-plaintiff, Chris Chester, who lost his wife and daughter in the crash.
Vanessa shared Instagram photos of memorabilia pieces she collected during her late husband’s career last year amid the legal drama.
Included among the keepsakes are the NBA star’s high school jersey and warmups, which she said their family didn’t get back until 2013.
Among the other items are the Adidas sneakers Kobe wore during his championship run with the Los Angeles Lakers and the champagne-soaked locker room t-shirt he wore after winning the championship in 2001.
“I keep EVERYTHING for my baby and our girls,” she added.
