Horror game Alone in the Dark returns to terrify players
Alone in the Dark is the mother of the horror game genre, sending shivers down the spines of unsuspecting 90s kids by immersing them in a monster-infested world that tested not just players’ ability to survive, but their sanity. Resurrecting the iconic series, Pieces Interactive is bringing Alone in the Dark into the modern day, and it’s just as terrifying as the original.
WoW Classic PvP players won’t be punished for refusing XP
WoW Classic PvP players who choose not to gain XP from player vs player combat in World of Warcraft’s battlegrounds will no longer be placed into a separate pool of players in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This change will likely be hugely welcome news to one segment of the MMORPG’s player base, who prefer to avoid experience gains as they wish to compete in a specific level-locked bracket.
As described in a blue post from developer Pazorax on the WoW Classic forum, “the ability to earn experience from PvP was originally added to encourage people who enjoy PvP to do battlegrounds as part of their leveling up experience.” However, the team realised that this change caused problems for one particular set of players.
PvP communities have formed around certain level brackets in WoW PvP – oftentimes because players particularly enjoy the balance at a particular level, or because it reminds them of an experience they had when first playing through the game. One particular example that is quoted in the post is ‘level 19 Warsong Gulch’ – much as you’d expect, this involves a subset of players who compete with highly optimised level 19 character builds.

Civ 6 players are good managers and science proves it
Civ 6 players are cut out to do well in business management, or so a study from the Review of Managerial Science says. The study, Good Gamers, Good Managers? A Proof-of-Concept Study with Sid Meier’s Civilization, was published in the Review in 2020, but since most of us don’t spend our disposable income on JSTOR subscriptions, parts of it are making the rounds on Reddit now. Here’s the gist of the study (without having to buy a sub).

Diablo Immortal bug perplexes players again with reduced EXP
A Diablo Immortal bug is perplexing players of the RPG game once again. This time, the symptom is randomly reduced EXP values obtained from enemies while farming. Some of the free-to-play game’s most dedicated grinding fans have been attempting to ascertain what is causing the issue, which is causing farming to become less effective thanks to random inconsistencies in earned experience values.
Reddit user staplepies posted their research on the topic to the game’s subreddit. Staplepies, who says they are one of the game’s top farming experts on the American servers and were among the first players to hit paragon level 150, dug into the mysterious experience bug in detail after spending a while researching the phenomenon.
The examples given are for the Shassar Oasis zone, but Staplepies comments that the bug “happens everywhere I’ve tested to some degree.” Due to their high paragon level (generally 13 to 14 levels above the server paragon level), their earned experience is already reduced from the base amount, meaning that they are only expecting to earn 10% of the default amount – this is expected, and is Diablo Immortal’s way of keeping a server’s population levelling at roughly similar pace.

EA say it’s “fair” that players can buy controversial loot boxes in FIFA 23
FIFA 23’s Ultimate Team mode will follow previous games by including loot boxes, EA have confirmed. In the past few years, several studies have linked loot boxes with gambling, and several European countries have moved to regulate them. In a statement given to Eurogamer, EA said that Ultimate Team packs are “a part of FIFA that players love” and that “Giving players the choice to spend if they want to is fair.”
Anime MMO Tower Of Fantasy offers players free gifts after rocky launch
Free-to-play gacha MMO Tower Of Fantasy was struggling with server issues after it lauched yesterday, but – touch wood – no more. The developers say that these are now fixed and that players should find it easier to log in and play. They’ve also said there’s more fixes planned for the next couple of days.
Why Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC devs want players to “feel like we’re honouring the platform”
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is the latest ex-PlayStation exclusive to rock up on PC, following a collaborative effort between original developers Insomniac Games and porting specialists Nixxes. It’s also a skyscape-swinging, baddie-decking good time, so says Alice Bee’s review, and one that comes with plenty of special features just for the Windows version. I’ll be posting a more performance-and-hardware-focused guide to it later this week, but in the meantime I called up Jurjen Katsman, founder and senior director of development at Nixxes, and Mike Fitzgerald, core technology director at Insomniac, for a chat about how Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered makes the jump to PC.
Elden Ring’s story no longer makes you invade other players’ games
Elden Ring just got a bit easier for single-player purists. Patch 1.06, released today, adds a new way to advance the quest of White Mask Varré — something that previously involved using the multiplayer system to invade other players’ worlds. Now, Varré will let you defeat a new character in order to join his assassins’ order, something that grants early access to a major area of the game. This comes alongside a variety of other changes, including the option to invade or help players across a much larger distance.
Varré’s multiplayer demand was a rare sore point for people — including me — who either weren’t interested in player-versus-player dueling or played in offline mode. Avoiding his quest didn’t completely lock you out of any…
