PUBG creator is building a planet-sized sandbox game
Since early this year, we’ve known that PUBG creator Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene has been working on something big – he’s shown off a tech demo that produced 64x64km squares of runtime generated terrain, and said that it’s a ‘proof of concept’ for a sandbox game on the planetary scale. In a new interview, Greene and his collaborator David Polfeldt, the former managing director of Ubisoft Massive, shed more light on the project and what Greene hopes to accomplish. It sounds a lot like a metaverse, but without the usual corporate buzzwords and brands attached.
Greene and Polfeldt are the subjects of former Edge Magazine editor Nathan Brown’s latest Hit Points newsletter on Substack, and the entire article is worth a read. Greene’s project, it seems, got off to a rocky start, and he takes the blame for that – he didn’t have experience managing large teams of developers, and this resulted in some inopportune hires of people who weren’t right for the project.

PUBG devs are making a game based on Korean fantasy epic The Bird That Drinks Tears
Krafton, Korean publishers PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, have released a “visual concept trailer” for a new game based on Korean epic fantasy novels The Bird That Drinks Tears. They’re still describing the game as “unannounced”, but say that the trailer illustrates the “mystical tone” they’re aiming for.

PUBG: Battlegrounds Collaborates With McLaren To Bring New Vehicles In-game
Krafton has collaborated with the British vehicle manufacturer McLaren Automotive to bring the McLaren GT to PUBG just in time for the 19.2 update. In addition to the new car skins, the 19.2 update will also bring new content to the game, including a new weather system in Deston, a new vehicle, and more.
PC players will have access to the McLaren GT vehicle skins from September 7 to November 2, while console players will be able to obtain the skin from September 15 to November 10. To celebrate the collaboration, players can get the McLaren GT Standard-Onyx Black, which features a vehicle skin, costume, gear, emote, and more from in-game McLaren Loot Caches. They will then be able to equip the McLaren Skins to vehicles via the new vehicle interaction feature.
Players will be able to make the following vehicle skins workshop when McLaren tokens are used:
PUBG made it “difficult” to tell the story of The Callisto Protocol
PUBG, the online, multiplayer, battle royale from publisher Krafton, was initially part of a shared fictional universe with upcoming horror game and Dead Space spiritual successor The Callisto Protocol, but this was dropped when linking the two became “difficult” for developer Striking Distance.

PUBG has raked in “80,000 new users per day” since going free-to-play
It sounds like PUBG has done pretty well for itself since going free-to-play, apparently bringing in roughly 80,000 news users a day.
More and more live service games are going free-to-play, with PUBG having done so in January of this year, and Fall Guys having done the same in June. A big part of that is likely to bring in more players, especially because all of the big, successful live service titles like Apex Legends and Destiny 2 are free-to-play. And according to developer Krafton’s preliminary earnings report for the first half of 2022, PUBG going free to play has certainly helped.
The report states that since going free-to-play in January, PUBG “has seen a steady inflow of more than 80,000 new users per day.” To give you an idea of how many new players that is, PUBG went free-to-play 214 days ago, meaning over 17 million players have signed-up to play the game.
PUBG: Battlegrounds Has Grown By 80,000 Players Each Day Since Going Free-to-Play
PUBG picks up 80,000 extra players daily now that it’s free
Battle Royale craze progenitor PUBG: Battlegrounds seems pretty happy with its free-to-play release, as parent company Krafton says it has picked up more than 80,000 new users per day since it went free in January. Revenue from PUBG is also up, with average revenue per user up “more than 20% [quarter over quarter].” This news comes courtesy of the company’s revenue report for the first half of 2022.
PUBG: Battlegrounds got a name change last year ahead of its transition to free-to-play, circumstances which have also opened the floodgates to brand collaborations, most recently with Assassin’s Creed, which we thought was kind of weird to be honest. Either way, revenue for Krafton is overall up, though it’s not clear how much of that is coming from PUBG Mobile or Krafton’s other mobile PUBG-adjacent shooter, New State Mobile.
The publisher’s earnings report reiterated its commitment to Unknown Worlds’ new IP, which will be revealed at GamesCom, as well as Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol. It also reiterated the recent announcement of a game project based on the Korean fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears, which I’m sure is very exciting if you can read the Korean source material.
