Surprise, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom speedrunners are already setting records
It’s not even been an entire day for most of us playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom yet, and even still someone has already managed to pull off a speedrun.
You might not be very familiar with Breath of the Wild speedruns, and if you aren’t, you should be, because they’re a work of art. The current world record for the first game currently clocks in at just under 24 minutes, a ridiculous figure when you consider how big that game is. But you know what’s even more ridiculous? The fact that someone has managed to not only beat the game on launch day, but do so as a speedrun, and that speedrun coming in at just over an hour and a half.
You are reading that right, someone has already managed to speed through the game in a breeze, achieving the specific time of 1:34:33, an incredibly impressive achievement for a day one speedrun. As spotted by VGC, this particular run comes from speedrunner gymnast86, who shared their speedrun earlier today – obviously the run will be absolutely full of end game spoilers, so don’t watch it if you don’t want to ruin the ending for yourself. Gymnast86 was even kind enough to put out a short video showing off some of the tricks they used to pull off the feat, but again, spoilers, so maybe stay clear until you’re done with the game.
Ocean Temperatures Break Records. Scientists are Alarmed
Ocean surface heat is at record-breaking levels. Temperatures began climbing in mid-March and skyrocketed over the course of several weeks, leaving scientists scrambling to figure out exactly why.
Temperatures have fallen since their peak in April — as they naturally do in the spring — but they are still higher than they have ever been on record for this time of year…. The record may not seem huge — it’s nearly two-tenths of a degree higher than the previous record in 2016 — but given how much heat is needed to warm up this huge body of water, “it’s a massive amount of energy,” Matthew England, professor of ocean and climate dynamics at the University of New South Wales, Australia, told CNN… Some scientists are concerned the scale of these new records could mark the start of an alarming trend. Others say record-breaking temperatures like these are always concerning but to be expected given the human-caused climate crisis.
All agree the consequences are likely to be significant. Warmer oceans bleach coral, kill marine life, increase sea level rise and make the ocean less efficient at absorbing planet-warming pollution — the warmer oceans get, the more the planet will heat.
The science leader at the British Antarctic Survey told CNN that “it’s probably too early” to blame El Niño.” In fact, the world just emerged from a 3-year La Niña cooling event in March. So instead, CNN gets a different explanation fro Gregory C. Johnson, an oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
“It’s a little bit like we’ve had the freezer door open for a while and it’s helped to cool the planet,” Johnson said. But even while that freezer has been open, background temperatures have continued to rise. Now the freezer is closed, everything is hotter than before.
Later CNN adds that some scientists are concerned “climate change might be progressing in ways climate models have not predicted.”
One surprising reason could be the reduction of aerosols in the atmosphere. In 2020, regulations were introduced to limit the amount of sulfur in the fuel ships used — a policy aimed at addressing air pollution. Though air pollution has a significant impact on human health, it also acts as an artificial sunscreen and reflects sunlight away from the Earth. One theory is the absence of aerosols may have turned up the heat, said Karina von Schuckmann [an oceanographer at Mercator Ocean International in France].

Apple Q2 results beat estimates, set records, but guidance is flat
Apple beat estimates for its fiscal Q2 2023, but the results released late Thursday were decidedly uneven.
iPhone sales, services, and emerging markets were the quarter’s high spots, but Mac and iPad sales declined, and wearables seemed flat. Looking ahead, Apple officials predict a slight decline as long as the economic situation doesn’t deteriorate.
Apple beats expectations, but revenue falls
First, the numbers: Apple posted quarterly revenue of $94.8 billion, down 2.5% year over year with profits of $24.2 billion and earnings per share of $1.52.
This was ahead of analyst expectations of $93 billion in revenue and $22.6 billion in profits. (The company noted out that if currency rates had remained constant, it would have grown revenues by 3%.)
