Raoul Moat took Dad from us when he pulled the trigger …now ITV’s making us relive it, says PC David Rathband’s daughter
THE daughter of one of Raoul Moat’s victims says the gunman took her dad “as soon as he pulled the trigger” – and now the family has to relive their agony thanks to ITV’s drama.
Mia Rathband was just 14 when her badly wounded dad PC David Rathband took his own life in 2012.

The police officer was blasted in the face at close range twice by bodybuilder and ex-bouncer Moat, 37, in 2010.
David, 42, was blinded in the horror attack and after two years of struggling with his disability, killed himself.
Now in her first interview, Mia has said the three-part ITV drama is very “painful” and she doesn’t “understand why it’s needed”.
The new series which ends tonight dramatises Moat’s terrifying rampage – which saw him kill one victim and injure two.
Just 12 years old at the time, Mia was celebrating her birthday with friends at a sleepover the night Moat shot her dad.
The dad-of-two wasn’t meant to be working that night but picked up the extra shift.
Mia, now 24, recalled the moment she woke in the middle of the night and could tell something was wrong.
She told the Daily Mail: “I do remember feeling that something wasn’t right. My mum wasn’t there, but one of our neighbours was.
“She said Mum was at the hospital because my dad had had an accident at work.
“I thought it was a car accident, because he was a traffic officer.”
Walking into the hospital the following morning, Mia was told ” your dad doesn’t look the same” as her mum broke the news he’d been shot.
Mia added: “You know in films where everything around you stops? It was like that. I don’t think I could even process it.”
Previously convicted Moat went on a rampage after he was freed from jail.
He tracked down ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart and her new boyfriend Chris Brown, 29, 13 years ago.
After firing a shotgun through a window in Gateshead, Moat killed Chris while injuring Sam.
Warped Moat then blasted David at random in his parked patrol car after going looking for a policeman to murder.
David’s twin brother Darren Rathband has said “the victims were never a priority” when it came to filming the drama series.
He said: “This ITV drama should be a comedy — or at least a parody set with the Benny Hill theme music.
“The victims were never a priority. ITV have ignored the sentiment, and have paid the relatives lip service.”
Moat’s long-lost dad Peter Blake, 81, said the series should “never have been made” as it will “re-traumatise” his grandkids.
Moat’s daughter Katelaine Fitzpatrick, 24, previously told The Sun the series will “bring the horror back“.
The mum, who admits she’s ashamed to call Moat her dad, said: “For many it will just be a crime drama on telly, but for me and his victims, and the family of his victims, this is our life.
“He was a monster. He ruined so many lives and I don’t think it will ever stop affecting my life.”
The Hunt for Raoul Moat started on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday, 16 April. Episode two aired Monday, 17 April and episode three airs Tuesday, 18 April.

The Internet Archive’s Calculator Drawer lets you relive high school math class
If you’ve been reading Engadget for a while, there’s a good chance your high school education involved using a scientific or graphing calculator during math class. Your old calculator might even be sitting in a desk drawer somewhere collecting dust. If you can’t find it, the Internet Archive’s latest project is here to help (via Ars Technica).
With the help of the team behind the Multi-purpose Emulation Framework (MAME), a project that has spent the past 25 years creating software that can emulate all sorts of gadgets, the archive now offers emulated versions of some of the most popular calculators of the past few decades. In all, The Calculator Drawer features 14 different models for Internet Archive visitors to noodle around, including the venerable Texas Instruments TI-81 from 1990.
Not every calculator of note from the past 25 years is part of the collection. For instance, you won’t find the Casio fx-7000g, the world’s first graphing calculator, on the list, but if you used a Texas Instruments or HP model back in school, there’s a good chance you’ll find something that should feel familiar. And if you feel a bit overwhelmed by all the buttons, worry not; the Internet Archive has also uploaded manuals for most of the included calculators.

The Internet Archive’s PalmPilot Emulation project lets you relive tech history
Fifteen years after the release of the iPhone, it’s easy to overlook the role early innovators like Palm played in popularizing the smartphone. By the time HP unceremoniously shut down the company in 2011, Palm had struggled for a few years to carve out a niche for itself among Apple and Google. But ask anyone who had a chance to use a Palm PDA in the late ‘90s or early 2000s and they’ll tell you how fondly they remember the hardware and software that made the company’s vision possible. Now, it’s easier than ever to see what made Palm OS so special back in its day.
This week, archivist Jason Scott uploaded a database of Palm OS apps to the Internet Archive. In all, there are about 560 programs to check out, including old favorites like DopeWars and SpaceTrader. Even if you don’t have any nostalgia for Palm, it’s well worth spending a few minutes with the collection to see how much – or, in some cases, little – things have changed since Palm OS was a dominant player in the market.
Hey, so, don’t tell anyone, but I’m announcing PalmPilot emulation at Internet Archive for the holidays, probably next week. All the currently-working items need descriptions, so it’s not quite ready. Don’t tell anybody, OK? https://t.co/ye9z4iTPsxpic.twitter.com/0SNRVJw0Kp

For instance, there’s an entire section devoted to shareware and it’s interesting to see just how much some developers thought it was appropriate to pay for their software. Want to use the full version of StockCalc? Just send $15 by post to DDT Investments in Plaistow, New Hampshire.
In an interview with The Verge, Scott said it took about six months to get the CloudpilotEmu emulator to work with the Internet Archive. There’s still some work to be done. Specifically, some of the more obscure apps are missing descriptions and metadata. Scott also hopes to write instructions for each program. Still, short of buying an old Palm device off of eBay, this is the best way to experience a bygone computing era. That’s because CloudpilotEmu allows you to navigate through Palm OS. You can even launch the database from your phone and there’s full support for Palm’s Graffiti handwriting recognition system. If you want to help Scott with the project, contact him on Twitter or Discord.
