Renfield Isn’t Here To Kick Off A Cinematic Universe And Writer Robert Kirkman Couldn’t Be Happier About It
Any time a big-budget action movie heads to theaters, immediately people start wondering about sequels, spin-offs, and other continuations that grow to become a cinematic universe. More than a decade of Marvel Studios movies have trained many viewers to see bigger films through those glasses. That’s why it’s so refreshing to see a movie like Renfield, which is full of the action, comedy, and ridiculous gore the trailers have been promising, without having to also worry about missing a post-credits scene or a nod to a potential future movie. It’s entirely self-contained about Count Dracula’s (Nicolas Cage) familiar, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), which is exactly how writer Robert Kirkman wanted the story to be told.
Speaking to GameSpot, Kirkman readily admitted that he loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other large film franchises. Still, he adds, “It [has] kind of done to death now where [at] the end of the movie, they kind of give you a preview of the movie you wish you would have been watching the whole time.”
And he’s not wrong. As exciting as every new Marvel or DC movie is, in the back of your mind, you’re wondering what’s going to happen at the end to set up the next several films, rather than just taking the time to bask in what you’re watching.
Renfield Is a Very, Very Bloody Good Time
Absolutely dripping blood and camped out all week long, Renfield is more Raimi than Coppola, delightfully ripping into gangsters and corrupt cops as Renfield—Dracula’s traditionally toothless companion—turns out to be not-so-toothless after all. This film, directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) and written by…
Nicolas Cage Cautions That His Dracula Doesn’t Have Much Screentime In Renfield
Nicolas Cage is playing Dracula in the upcoming movie, Renfield, but his character doesn’t have a lot of screentime, the actor has confirmed. Speaking to Collider, Cage discussed the role and why the movie is, of course, more about Nicholas Hoult’s character, Dracula’s servant Renfield.
Cage pointed out how the Dracula character has appeared in media many, many times over the years–sometimes well and sometimes… not. Cage said he wants to be “on the side of doing something fresh and something that pops.”
Cage, naturally, believes he has achieved that with his portrayal of Dracula in Renfield. But the movie is not about him, so Dracula doesn’t appear all that much.
Renfield: When Nic Cage’s Dracula Movie Comes Out, Latest Trailer, And Everything Else To Know
The premise sounds like a fever dream: Nicholas Cage playing Dracula in a horror comedy based on a pitch by Robert Kirkman–you know, the Walking Dead guy–directed by the man responsible for The Lego Batman Movie. And yet, here we are–Renfield is due out this year and we can’t wait.
The concept is pretty simple, for how absolutely bonkers the casting and production is. The story revolves around R.M. Renfield (surprise!), the henchman of Count Dracula. You may recognize his name, if you’re a fan of classic Dracula literature and media. He’s Dracula’s henchman and devoted familiar who is featured heavily in Bram Stoker’s original novel and many adaptations of it. This movie, however, will likely feature a different side of the character given that it’s a horror comedy.
