The Biden administration may be funding AI research, but it’s also hoping to keep companies accountable for their behavior. Vice President Kamala Harris has met the CEOs of Alphabet (Google’s parent), Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic in a bid to get more safeguards for AI. Private firms have an “ethical, moral and legal responsibility” to make their AI products safe and secure, Harris says in a statement. She adds that they still have to honor current laws.
The Vice President casts generative AI technologies like Bard, Bing Chat and ChatGPT as having the potential to both help and harm the country. It can address some of the “biggest challenges,” but it can also be used to violate rights, create distrust and weaken “faith in democracy,” according to Harris. She pointed to investigations into Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election as evidence that hostile nations will use tech to undercut democratic processes.
Finer details of the discussions aren’t available as of this writing. However, Bloombergclaims invitations to the meeting outlined discussions of the risks of AI development, efforts to limit those risks and other ways the government could cooperate with the private sector to safely embrace AI.
Generative AI has been helpful for detailed search answers, producing art and even writing messages for job hunters. Accuracy remains a problem, however, and there are concerns about cheating, copyright violations and job automation. IBM said this week it would pause hiring for roles that could eventually be replaced with AI. There’s been enough worry about AI’s dangers that industry leaders and experts have called for a six-month pause on experiments to address ethical issues.
Biden’s officials aren’t waiting for companies to act. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is asking for public comments on possible rules for AI development. Even so, the Harris meeting sends a not-so-subtle message that AI creators face a crackdown if they don’t act responsibly.

RUSSIAN dissidents are understood to have claimed responsibility for the bombing that killed a Russian propogandist and have warned more is to come.
The underground anti-establishment group, known as the National Republic Army (NRA), have allegedly claimed to be behind the attack on pro-Kremlin blogger Vladlen Tatarsky.

Trepova, 26, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with terrorism only hours before dissident Russians allegedly claimed their involvement[/caption]
In a statement published on the Russian social media app Telegram, the group claim to have organised and carried out the bombing attack that tore through a café in central St Petersburg.
They also praise the alleged assassin, Daria Trepova, 26, who they call a “hero” for her role in the fight to overthrow Putin and call on others to follow her “example”.
The bile-monger Tatarsky was holding a media event for 100 people on Sunday when a woman, assumed to be Trepova, handed him a gold TNT-laden figurine of himself.
Chilling footage captures the exact moment the Putin-ally meets his end when the concealed bomb explodes killing him instantly and injuring 30 others.
The female suspect, Trepova, was quickly caught and later pictured aggressively being interrogated by Russians on Monday while chained to a radiator after a strange alleged confession.
On Tuesday, she was paraded in a glass cage in court after being charged with terrorism. The 26-year-old could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
However, the NRA have now reportedly declared their involvement “in the liquidation of Vladen Tatarsky.”
The shadowy group is considered one of the most violent of those trying to overthrow mad Vlad – but also the most mysterious.
Their manifesto is to destroy the tyrant and free Russia from his grasp.
It contains the definitive line: “Putin will be deposed and destroyed by us!”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the group rose to prominence through a serious of arson attacks and sabotage missions led against the Russian military from inside their homeland.
The NRA previously claimed to be behind the violent assassination of Darya Dugin – Russian journalist and daughter of Putin’s “spiritual mastermind” Alexander Dugin – in August of last year.
Their alleged new statement reads: “We, the St. Petersburg column of the National Republican Army, declare:
“We organized and carried out an action on April 2, 2023 against a group of Z-activists and personally against the well-known warmonger and war propagandist, war criminal Maxim Fomin, known as Vladlen Tatarsky.”
The group claim they received no outside foreign help and acted “autonomously”, which goes against the shaky claims made by Russian media outlets that Ukraine was responsible for the bombing.
The spokesperson for the group and well-known Russian exile, Ilya Ponomarev, also confirmed the NRA’s claims they masterminded the operation.
“The partisans are resisting the current political system in Russia and want it to be removed”, he told the Express.
“They cannot join the fighting in the military, but they are holding the front inside Russia.”
Ponomarev claims the partisans wanted to make Putin-backing Kremlin elites aware that they are “not safe anymore”.
“The audience is the elites: ‘Beware, you are not safe anymore, Putin is not able to protect you, we are everywhere’,” he says.
The group’s supposed statement continues with: “This action was carried out in a club owned by one of the most famous Russian gangsters and criminals, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
“As a result of the action the club will stop its work. We are satisfied with this.
“The action we carried out was not directed against civilians, and all the victims are among the active supporters of the war, justifying the war crimes of the Putin regime in Ukraine.”
The statement then refers to Trepova as a “well-known figure in the leftist and feminist movement” and a “hero”.
“At a time when many ‘oppositionists’ wrote posts on Facebook and shone flashlights, she fought, went to protests and risked her freedom by participating in all opposition movements that now refuse her.”
The Russian partisan group calls on human rights groups to help the suspect who they see as a “hostage of the system”.
“We call on the people of Russia to follow our example and provide all kinds of resistance to the criminal Russian regime up to its complete destruction.
“Criminals will not feel safe on Russian soil!”
The statement signs off with: “Russia will be free!”
For now, Trepova will remain in Russian custody till June 2 while the trial is ongoing.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said it has charged Trepova with committing “a terrorist act by an organised group that caused intentional death”.
Prosecutors alleged she had acted under instructions from people working on behalf of Ukraine.
Trepova’s husband said he believes she had been framed and had not known the statue contained explosives.
It has previously been claimed Putin personally ordered Tatarsky’s assassination and will use it to crush his rivals.
Telegram channel General SVR – which claims to be fed information by a Kremlin insider – claimed the Russian tyrant was “pleased” with the killing of Tatarsky, and the successful hit will supposedly be used to fuel a new wave of attacks on his opponents.

Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO, responded to the mass layoffs under Elon Musk’s ownership by saying he owns “the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation” and that he grew the company “too quickly.” On Friday, Musk laid off about half of Twitter’s workforce, affecting employees across all departments.
“Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment,” Dorsey writes. “I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that.”
I am grateful for, and love, everyone who has ever worked on Twitter. I don’t expect that to be mutual in this…
