Worst areas in UK for super rat invasions revealed – here’s how to keep rodents out of your garden

There are now more than 150 million of the disease-ridden pests across Britain – with some as big as cats.

Experts said that rats are becoming immune to normal control methods – with rodent populations exploding in many UK cities.
Officials figures show Swansea in Wales is top of the league for rats – recording more than 16,000 infestations.
Southwark in South London has the second-biggest rat problem with 16,665 infestations – and neighbouring borough Lambeth places ninth on the list.
Third place in the rat-race goes to Birmingham, with 12,736 infestations, followed by Liverpool.
Glasgow takes fifth place, with North Lanarkshire the other Scottish local authority in the top ten.
The remaining spots in the top ten go to Sunderland, Wigan and Nottingham.
Pest control expert Stuart Halliday revealed his three tops tips for doing your bit in the war on rats – or at least for keeping them out of your garden.
He told The Sun: “The best way to keep the rats out is to keep your grass cut and you garden well maintained.
“Rats hate a change of environment so things like trimming the hedges, cutting the grass – that will put them off.
“They won’t want to be there because you’re moving it around too much.
“If it’s unkempt and the grass is tall and the flowerbeds are messy they will love it there.
“Another thing is making sure you are keeping any compost in proper sealed containers. Rats love grassy compost because it’s food.
“If they can’t get to your barbeque they will go for that in your shed. Don’t leave bags of compost outside.
“The final thing is water. Rats need a lot of water for their size to survive.
“If you’re leaving buckets of old rainwater around your garden, you’re just making them a nice home. They will be attracted to that water source.”
The research, from Direct Line Home insurance, says there has been a 12 per cent rise in residential rodent call outs since 2020.
Last year local authorities dealt with 226,831 rodent infestations – the equivalent of 621 per day costing councils a combined estimated spend of £36million.
Eastbourne Council saw the highest increase in rodent infestations in 2022 with 598, up from 208 in 2021 – a massive 188 per cent increase.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Edition Of Best Switch Handheld Controller Revealed
If you’re worried about wearing out your Joy-Cons playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom over the next couple months, never fear. Hori has you covered with this gorgeous Tears of Kingdom-themed edition of its excellent Split Pad Pro , which costs $60 and releases August 31 (though that could be a placeholder date). Preorders are sold out at this time, but we imagine it’ll be available to order again.
The Hori Split Pad Pro is GameSpot’s current pick for best Switch controller for handheld-focused players, and for good reason: it gives you a full-sized, ergonomic controller experience in handheld mode. The buttons, the sticks, triggers, and D-pad are all much larger on the Split Pad Pro than they are on the stock Joy-Cons. Rihanna’s baby boy’s unique name finally revealed one year after welcoming son- and fans are shocked by her inspiration
RIHANNA has finally released the name of her new son, and fans are confused by her choice.
Rihanna, 35, and her partner A$AP Rocky, 34, had their first child together almost a year ago on May 13, 2022.
Rihanna’s son’s name has just dropped, and her fans need a minute to compose themselves[/caption]
The name was released after a news outlet discovered the baby’s birth certificate[/caption]
The couple has another little one on the way, but until today the name of their first son was unknown.
The Daily Mail reported the name of Rihanna’s child after they obtained his birth certificate.
The almost-one-year-old is named RZA Athelston Mayers.
He’s apparently named after the producer and rapper RZA- who is also the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan.
Up until this information dropped, the boy’s name was presumed to be Noah.
FANS IN SHOCK
Fans rushed to social media after the baby’s name dropped online, and many are shocked and confused about the inspiration behind the name.
One fan on Twitter said, “Not Rihanna naming that baby after a Wu-Tang Clan, I can see why she tried to keep it secret.”
Another was in full denial, “Now I know d**n well Rihanna ain’t name that baby that…”
A third tweeted, “This is the most Caribbean name I’ve seen in a long time. Lmfao.”
“I know Rihanna let A$AP pick that damn name. She really in love,” said another.
MOVING ON
She already has homes in Barbados and Los Angeles, and now Rihanna is eyeing up a new place in Paris.
The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed the pregnant superstar secretly viewed properties in the French capital in April — but opted to do it between 3am and 5am to avoid being spotted.
She was joined by A$AP Rocky for tours around two luxury properties in the 16th Arrondissement, near the Arc de Triomphe, including a spacious home with a garden.
One of the properties is on the market for more than £2.6million, so they certainly aren’t scrimping.
A source said: “Rihanna wants her kids to be able to see the world — and what better way than to have homes all over the place?
“They went under the cover of darkness so they could tour the houses in peace and without a rush.
“It was a bit of an inconvenience for the team showing them around, but given it was for Rihanna, no one was complaining.
“The houses they are viewing are gorgeous but their main concern is really good security and an amazing location.
“They won’t spend their money on any old place, but they would like to get a deal done sooner rather than later so that it’s ready for the next time the family is in town. Rihanna’s due date is fast approaching but she has loved her getaway to France and can’t wait to return.”
