Three new Star Wars movies are coming, including one with Daisy Ridley as Rey
The latest edition of Star Wars Celebration is underway and, along with some fresh details about shows coming to Disney+ over the next year or two, Lucasfilm revealed more info about what’s ahead for the movie side of the franchise. It announced three Star Wars films, one of which will feature the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey.
That film will take place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the final movie in the Skywalker saga and the most recent Star Wars movie to hit the big screen. It will center around Rey forming a new Jedi Order. Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face) will direct the film.
A movie from James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) will delve into the origins of the Force and the Jedi. It will be set 25,000 years before anything else we’ve seen in the Star Wars universe to date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, Dave Filoni will finally get a shot at directing a live-action Star Wars movie. Filoni has been at the heart of the franchise for many years. He directed the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars and has been deeply involved with the recent spate of Disney+ shows, such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. Fittingly, the movie he’s set to direct will tie the stories of those shows together and put a bow on them.
Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t revealed release dates for any of these films. However, Disney’s current slate includes holiday 2025 and 2027 dates for untitled Star Wars flicks.
After the last three Star Wars films (The Last Jedi, Solo and The Rise of Skywalker) didn’t exactly receive wide acclaim, Disney and Lucasfilm walked back on their plans to release a movie every year. They have made several attempts to get other Star Wars films off the ground, including Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, a trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, another trilogy from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and entries from Taika Waititi and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige.
All of those projects have either been canned or deprioritized, according to reports. Disney and Lucasfilm are evidently hoping these three freshly announced films will reignite Star Wars’ success in movie theaters, even if we’ll have to wait at least a couple of years to see the first of them.

Daisy Ridley Discusses Her Star Wars Future
Daisy Ridley played the central character Rey in the newest trilogy of mainline Star Wars movies, and while she is not planning to return in the next trilogy of Star Wars films, the future beyond that is uncertain. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley said she believes Rey’s story came to a fitting end in The Rise of Skywalker but said it would be “amazing” to see her return one day.
“Honestly, I have no idea,” Ridley said about her potential involvement in future Star Wars projects as Rey. “I feel like Rey’s story ended in a wonderful way with the last film [Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker].”
2015’s The Force Awakens brought back Han, Luke, and Leia, and fans are wondering if Rey, Finn, Poe, and others from the newest trilogy could return one day. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Sony is reportedly working on a ‘Gravity Rush’ movie with Ridley Scott’s production team
Sony seems determined to turn every gaming property it has ever laid a finger on into a movie or TV show. PlayStation Productions has a whole heap of projects in the works and the latest, according to Deadline, is a Gravity Rush film.
The movie will be based on the 2012 PlayStation Vita game of the same name from Japan Studio’s Team Gravity (the title was later remastered for PlayStation 4). You play as Kat, an amnesiac who can manipulate gravity to traverse an open world in a novel way. Kat uses her powers to protect the people of Hekseville from gravity storms and monsters. A sequel arrived on PS4 in 2017.
Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free Productions is reportedly working on the movie. Emily Jerome, the writer of upcoming thriller Panopticon, is working on the script. Anna Mastro, who helmed Disney+ film Secret Society of Second Born Royals and episodes of many notable TV shows, is onboard as director.
The Gravity Rush project underlines just how serious Sony is about expanding its gaming IP into the realms of film and television. It finally released an Uncharted movie earlier this year and over the weekend, it emerged that a Days Gone film is in development. That’s on top of shows based on Twisted Metal,God of War and the Horizon games, as well as upcoming Gran Turismo and Ghost of Tsushima movies.
Last, but by no means least, a show based on The Last of Us is coming to HBO next year. The network released the first footage from the series in a sizzle reel on Sunday. With The Last of Us Day fast approaching, we likely won’t have to wait long for a full trailer.
