Thousands of Brits missing out on life saving cancer tests as TV stars back campaign
BRITONS are being urged to take up the offer of life-saving NHS bowel cancer tests by TV presenters Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh.
In the spirit of Sun writer Dame Deborah James, who campaigned for patients to “check your poo” and passed from the disease last summer, the pair are urging Brits to get checked.

Around 30 per cent of adults who receive the tests do not return them, the health service said.
Tommy — who battled throat cancer last year — said: “As a cancer survivor myself, I know how important diagnosing cancer early is.
“But I didn’t know that detecting bowel cancer at the earliest stage makes you up to nine times more likely to be successfully treated.
“So remember, if you are sent an NHS bowel cancer screening test, do it as soon as it arrives in the post. Put it by the loo, and don’t put it off.”
Former Gardeners’ World favourite Alan, 73, added: “I really urge everyone to do it — you owe it to your family, and you owe it to yourself.”
Around 42,900 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK, making it the fourth most common form of the disease.
It is Britain’s second most deadly cancer but can be cured if it’s caught early enough.
Home screening tests looking for tiny amounts of blood are sent out to everyone every two years after they turn 50.
The screening age was lowered to people in their 50s in 2021 thanks to The Sun’s No Time 2 Lose campaign, spearheaded by Dame Deborah.
NHS England national cancer director Dame Cally Palmer, said: “The entire country fell in love with the passionate campaigning of Dame Deborah James last year and her tireless work to bring bowel cancer to the forefront of health conversation.
“Her legacy continues on through these famous faces who are just as passionate as she is “We are already seeing incredible responses to our cancer awareness campaigns with record treatments and referrals.
“So do not delay in returning your kit as your next poo could save your life.”
What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?
The 3 main symptoms of bowel cancer are:
- persistent blood in your poo – that happens for no obvious reason or is associated with a change in bowel habit
- a persistent change in your bowel habit – which is usually having to poo more and your poo may also become more runny
- persistent lower abdominal (tummy) pain, bloating or discomfort – that’s always caused by eating and may be associated with loss of appetite or significant unintentional weight loss
Most people with these symptoms do not have bowel cancer. Other health problems can cause similar symptoms. For example:
- blood in the poo when associated with pain or soreness is more often caused by piles (haemorrhoids)
- a change in bowel habit or abdominal pain is usually caused by something you’ve eaten
- a change in bowel habit to going less often, with harder poo, is not usually caused by any serious condition – it may be worth trying laxatives before seeing a GP
These symptoms should be taken more seriously as you get older and when they persist despite simple treatments.

Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “Currently fewer than 40 per cent of people are diagnosed with bowel cancer at the earlier stages when it’s easier to treat.
“Screening is one of the best ways to detect the disease early, so it’s brilliant to see celebrities like Alan and Tommy getting on board helping to raise awareness and encouraging others to have open conversations about bowel cancer.”
Health secretary Steve Barclay said: “The NHS’ first national campaign on bowel cancer screening means more people will be encouraged to use the home testing kit when they receive it.
“Screening makes it more likely that bowel cancer will be successfully detected and treated.”
Energy bills set to stay at £2,500 from April – saving millions of families around £500
ENERGY bills are set to stay at £2,500 from April – saving millions of families around £500.
Jeremy Hunt is poised to extend the current level of government help for another three months.

The cap was due to rise to £3,000 for the average family as the Government tried to end state support for sky-high bills.
The Chancellor could make the announcement in his upcoming Spring Budget on March 15, which the respected Institute for Fiscal Studies say could cost around £2.7billion.
Businesses have been told to get ready for both outcomes, which could stop millions from struggling to afford their bills.
Wholesale energy prices are predicted to tumble later this year, with ministers hopeful they can wean everyone off state aid for their bills come July.
Energy Secretary Grant Shapps has been openly lobbying for the move.
Without government help, bills would have soared to a staggering £4,279 a year last January.
It comes after the Treasury received a bigger than expected windfall from higher tax receipts in January.
And lower predicted energy prices will cut the cost of the scheme for ministers – giving them an extra £30billion in extra cash ahead of the Budget.
But Mr Hunt has played down the prospect of slashing eye-watering taxes – saying he wants to use it to push down Britain’s huge debt mountain first.
Adam Scorer, chief executive of fuel poverty charity National Energy Action welcomed the move, but said it would still leave around 7.5million households in fuel poverty.
He said: “The need for targeted support for the most vulnerable households is as urgent as ever and unless we tackle the least efficient housing stock in Europe, the poorest households will simply not be able to afford a warm and safe home.”
Four saving tricks to create bespoke-style furniture on a budget using pieces from Ikea
YOU can create bespoke-style furniture on a budget using affordable pieces from Ikea.
Adapting staples from the Swedish store yields big savings, plus it gives your home its own style.
We have four saving tricks to create bespoke-style furniture using pieces from Ikea[/caption]
Here are four handy tricks . . .
EASY DRESSING TABLE: Make a fabulous dressing table on a budget with Ikea’s £45 Ekby Alex shelf with drawers.
Decide on a wall area where you want a vanity station, then attach the drawers at table height.
This works as an alternative to a dressing table as the drawers are shallow but wide.
Complete the glam station with your mirror and stool of choice.
CUSTOMISED MIRROR PANEL: Giant industrial-style windowpane mirrors are popular but can easily cost around £100.
Using Ikea’s £1 Lonsas mirror, plus the Yllevad black frame for 75p, you can get the same style statement for a fraction of the price.
First, plan the size of the mirror you want.
A nine-panel three by three (working out at £15.75) is a good place to start.
Pop mirrors in the frames then use command strips to attach to a wall — a pack of 12 costs around £3 from Amazon.
The frames need to be side by side in rows and columns.
Using a spirit level will help you keep the edges from sloping when attaching.
CHEAT BUILT-IN WARDROBES: Built-in wardrobes look great but can cost thousands of pounds.
However, Ikea’s Pax units easily look as good as a bespoke solution — as long as your ceiling is not much above 240cm. Prices for a one-door wardrobe start from £122 or units without doors start at £240.
You can mix and match units to fit the space.
And Ikea also has an online Pax planner to create a wardrobe perfect for your bedroom.
BUDGET ALCOVE SHELVING: The Havasta and Hauga ranges mimic the popular shelf and cupboard combination in living room alcoves.
Again, using a carpenter to create a bespoke version can cost thousands of pounds.
On the other hand, the Ikea cabinets start from £179 and come in a range of sizes so you can find the one that will slot into your space.

Martin Lewis show: Money saving expert reveals how to avoid massive 14% mobile phone bill surge in April
BRITS could avoid huge increases on their mobile phone bills thanks to these genius hacks.
Cheeky providers are set to hike their prices by 14 percent from April – leaving up to nine million Brits at risk of losing hundreds of pounds.
Money expert Martin Lewis said that’s because many are out of contract and now overpaying on their current deal.
But speaking on his Martin Lewis Money Show on Tuesday, he said Brits have a number of options to avoid a phone-shaped hole in the wallet.
The first trick is to work out if you are out of contract or have termination fees to leave your contract.
To do this, the saving whizz said: “Free text INFO to 85075 on your current phone.
“Sometimes they can’t do it, but it’s worth checking.”
He stressed that anyone who had termination fees and was within their contract may have to wait it out in order to save money.
The next hack is to switch networks to enjoy “huge savings”.
“All you do is change the SIM in your phone”, the savings expert said, before using a comparison site to see what deals are out there.
And if you’re worried about giving up your old number, you can keep it by texting PAC to 65075 on their current phone.
Doing this is also a good opportunity to start haggling with your provider to get a better deal on your phone contract.
Importantly, you should not be worried about changing phone providers based on phone signal you get.
Only four networks operate in the UK – EE, O2, Three and Vodafone, with all other firms like Orange and Tesco Mobile “piggybacking” on signals.
While you may not get certain services like WiFi calling, these other providers may be cheaper.
FBI says it ‘hacked the hackers’ of a ransomware service, saving victims $130 million
The Department of Justice announced this week that FBI agents successfully disrupted Hive, a notorious ransomware group, and prevented $130 million worth of ransom campaigns that targets no longer need to consider paying. While claiming the Hive group has been responsible for targeting over 1,500 victims in over 80 countries worldwide, the department now reveals it had infiltrated the group’s network for months before working with German and Netherlands officials to shut down Hive servers and websites this week.
“Simply put, using lawful means, we hacked the hackers,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco remarked during a press conference.
The FBI claims that by covertly hacking into Hive servers, it was able to quietly snatch up over…
