False Memories Can Form Within Seconds, Study Finds
Overall, the participants regularly misremembered the letters, but in a specific way. People were generally good at remembering when a typical letter was shown, with their inaccuracy rates hovering around 10%. But they were substantially worse at remembering a mirrored letter, with inaccuracy rates up to 40% in some experiments. And, interestingly enough, their memory got worse the longer they had to wait before recalling it. When they were asked to recall what they saw a half second later, for instance, they were wrong less than 20% of the time, but when they were asked three seconds later, the rate rose as high as 30%.
According to Otten, the findings — published Wednesday in PLOS One — indicate that our memory starts being shaped almost immediately by our preconceptions. People expect to see a regular letter, and don’t get easily fooled into misremembering a mirrored letter. But when the unexpected happens, we might often still default to our missed prediction. This bias doesn’t seem to kick in instantaneously, though, since people’s short-term memory was better when they had to be especially quick on their feet. “It is only when memory becomes less reliable through the passage of a tiny bit of time, or the addition of extra visual information, that internal expectations about the world start playing a role,” Otten said.

Enjoy 15 seconds of bombastic monster slaying in Atlas Fallen’s first gameplay trailer
Last summer, our Ed was lucky enough to see gameplay from Atlas Fallen, the upcoming action RPG from Deck13, the gang behind The Surge games. The game’s sandy dunes and over-the-top combat gave Ed chirpy AA vibes, whle the rest of us were relegated to the initial CG trailer and the hands-off preview. Until now. Publisher Focus Entertainment have now debuted a gameplay trailer for all of us, too – although it mostly consists of second-long combat snippets, sandwiched in between very grave and serious and important VO.

Surprisingly, the ice on the windscreen melts away in seconds.
The video’s title reads: “Wow! Didn’t know you could use an orange!”
While the caption reads: “Frozen car windscreen life hack.”
Some viewers loved the hack, with one saying: “Great tip!”
But most viewers seem more concerned about the man’s microwave, which looked extremely dirty.
One said: “It’s probably the bacteria on the orange that’s melting the ice.”
Another said: “It’s probably the bacteria on the orange that’s melting the ice.”
Another said: “I think your microwave started the new covid string.”
A fourth pointed out: “Really letting the car warm up works well too. While you are waiting, you can clean the microwave.”
Another hack is cutting a potato or onion in half and rubbing it all over the windscreen and windows the night before setting off.
Vinegar works similarly because its freezing point is much lower than water.
It’s essential to drive with a clear windscreen.
Drivers can be slapped with £100 fine and get up to three points on their licence if caught driving with an iced-over screen.
There’s plenty of other hacks to quickly de-ice your car.
One nifty trick is filling a zip-lock bag with hot water and rubbing it over the windscreen and windows.
Plus, one savvy motorist has come up with a hack to defrost your car in seconds that costs virtually nothing.
TikTok user @rosie_the_jack revealed that drivers only need a hair clip to de-ice their car.
Another hack is cutting an onion in half, and then before your windscreen is iced over, rub it generously over the screen.
And the most simple tip is to park your car in the right place because the sun rises in the east and will melt it for you.
Also, spraying your windscreen with a solution of water and vinegar every night before going to bed can help too.
You can now post Facebook Reels up to 90 seconds long
Every social media platform thinks you want to watch longer videos.
Last year, TikTok increased the maximum length of a video post from three minutes to ten minutes. Instagram Reels followed suit, increasing its 60-second maximum length to 90 seconds in June 2022. Today, Meta announced that Facebook Reels can be up to 90 seconds long, too.
Meta is also launching more creative tools for Facebook Reels creators — all of which were already rolled out for Instagram Reels months ago, leading some people to believe that Meta tested the changes out first on Instagram Reels before transitioning them to Facebook Reels. Almost all of the new tools appear to be imitations of tools already available on TikTok.
The new tools include a template feature that helps users create Facebook Reels using trending templates, ready-made Reels from Memories, and Grooves, a tool that automatically syncs the motion in your video to the beat of a song.
It’s easy to compare Facebook Reels to its short-form video predecessor TikTok, but Reels on both Instagram and Facebook has proven to be a formidable force all on its own, particularly in the face of potential TikTok bans. Just look at India: After the government banned TikTok across the nation, both Instagram and YouTube saw significant increases in downloads.
Meta rolls out new Facebook Reels features, expands max video length to 90 seconds
Meta announced today that it’s adding support for longer Facebook Reels of up to 90 seconds, along with some new creative tools. Up until now, Facebook Reels were limited to 60 seconds. The changes come several months after Meta launched support for longer Instagram Reels of up to 90 seconds. The expansion followed TikTok’s move […]
