Shocking: Congress seemed to actually understand AI’s potential risks during hearing
AI just had its big day on Capitol Hill.
Sam Altman, who is the CEO of ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI, and a figurehead for the current AI discourse, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee‘s subcommittee on privacy, technology, and the law for the first time Tuesday. Members of Congress pressed Altman, as well as IBM chief privacy and trust officer Christina Montgomery, and AI expert and NYU emeritus professor of psychology and neural science Gary Marcus, on numerous aspects of generative AI, regarding potential risks and what regulation in the space could look like.
And the hearing went…surprisingly okay?
I know it’s hard to believe. It’s a weird feeling to even write this, having covered numerous Congressional hearings on tech over the years.
Unlike, say, all the previous Congressional hearings on social media, members of Congress seemed to have a general understanding of what potential risks posed by AI actually look like. Septuagenarians may not get online content moderation, but they certainly understand the concept of job loss due to emerging technology. Section 230 may be a fairly confusing law for non web-savvy lawmakers, but they certainly are familiar with copyright laws when discussing potential concerns regarding AI.
Another breath of fresh air coming out of the AI hearing: It was a fairly bipartisan discussion. Hearings on social media frequently devolve into tit for tat back-and-forth needling between Democrats and Republicans over issues like misinformation and online censorship.
Online discussions around AI may be focusing on “woke” chatbots and whether AI models should be able to utter racial slurs. However, there was none of that here at the hearing. Members of both parties seemed to focus solely on the topic at hand, which according to the title of the hearing was Oversight of A.I.: Rules for Artificial Intelligence. Even Senator John Kennedy’s (R-LA) hypothetical scenario in which AI developers try to destroy the world was maneuvered back on track by the experts who pivoted to discussing datasets and AI training.
Perhaps the biggest tell that things went as well as a Congressional tech hearing could go: There are no memes going viral showcasing how out-of-touch U.S. lawmakers are. The dramatic beginning of the hearing featured Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the chairman of the committee, playing deepfake audio of himself reading an ChatGPT-generated script (Audio deepfakes use AI models to clone voices). From there, the proceedings remained productive to the end.
Yes, the bar is low when the comparison is to previous tech hearings. And the hearing wasn’t perfect. A major part of the conversation surrounding AI right now is just how dangerous the technology is. Much of this is straight-up hype from the industry, an edgy attempt to market AI’s immense, and profitable, capabilities (Remember how crypto was going to be the future and those not throwing their money into the space were “NGMI” or “not gonna make it?”). Also, lawmakers, as usual, seem dismayingly open to members of the industry they’re looking to regulate designing those very regulations. And, while Altman was in agreement with the need for regulation, we’ve heard the same thing from Silicon Valley types, including some who were in retrospect, likely bad faith actors.
But this hearing showed that there is potential for Congress to avoid the same mistakes it’s made with social media. But, remember, there’s just as much potential, if not more, for them to screw it all up.
Shocking moment OnlyFans star Astrid Wett flashes builders across the street sparking backlash
THIS is the shocking moment OnlyFans star Astrid Wett flashes her boobs at builders across the street.
The famous Instagram, TikTok and YouTube star sparked outrage online for her latest antic in front of unsuspecting workers.
Astrid, a keen Chelsea fan, posted the brief clip to her TikTok page, wanting to “cheer up” some builders working away behind her.
It is not clear where the footage was shot.
When the clip begins, Astrid is standing in front of a large, partially-open window with a building site in the background.
The workers in the distance can be seen wearing yellow hazard jackets and hard hats.
Astrid is seen wearing a black t-shirt and tight-fitting shorts.
She then opens the window further and yells out: “Hey, I’ve got something for you.”
The social media star then lifts her top up while the footage zooms in on two workers who look less than impressed by the stunt.
Astrid’s video caused a stir both on TikTok, where it has so far been seen more than 257,000 times, and Twitter.
The star came in for an almost universal panning by social media users.
Aston Villa fan and political commentator Emily Hewerston retweeted the clip to her 131,000 followers and wrote: “Imagine if a man did this to a group of women…”
In response, one Twitter user, posted: “Honestly, only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this girl.”
Another posted: “If I get the attention of some women and do a helicopter in the Premier Inn window… I’m doing time in a cell ffs.”
Other commentators branded her “pathetic”.
A few did see the funny side as one wrote: “I also need cheering up.”
A second posted: “She can come and cheer me up anytime.”
Earlier this month, Astrid appeared as a ring girl during the latest Misfits show.
Astrid appeared during the countdown show before the main event between KSI and Joe Fournier.

Love Island Lothario Adam Collard looks very different with shocking new hairstyle
LOVE Island star Adam Collard has switched up his hairstyle for a dramatic new look.
The reality star Lothario, 27, has been caught on film showing off his switched up barnet while working out in the gym.
Adam has ditched his natural dark brown hair and opted for a striking bleached blonde peroxide ‘do.
His new hairstyle is so different from his usual look that some fans are unlikely to even recognise him.
Adam has shared his workout video on Instagram and his followers have been quick to comment.
The Love Island hunk’s celebrity pal, ex Towie star Charlie Sims, wrote: “Like the hair Ad! !”
Another friend added: “Here for the blonde hair .”
And someone else commented: “Heeeey blonde friend.”
Others have compared Adam to America rapper Eminem – whose real name Marshall Mathers.
One teased: “Eminem 2000.” Another chimed in: “Slim shady.”
Adam hasn’t replied to the comments about his new hairstyle.
Last year, Adam returned to the Love Island villa for his second stint on the ITV2 reality show.
He entered as a bombshell, having previously appeared on the show four years previously, and made it to week eight before he was dumped.
Adam had coupled up with Welsh beauty Paige Thorne, steering her away from Jacques O’Neill.
But he has since admitted he went into the villa with a game plan firmly in place.
Speaking to Mail Online, Adam said: “The thing with Love Island is I’m the only one who is willing to admit it, I would completely choose the right person to stay on the show.”
He added: “That’s why I got back on the show in my eyes, they realised I didn’t care about anything.”
Adam previously discussed on his YouTube channel how he had witnessed stars of Love Island, such as Molly-Mae Hague, achieve enormous fame and how he wanted to follow in the same foot-steps.
He shared: “We all know the game. It was really hard for me the second time because I could see through everything, it is unbelievable how clear it is the second time.
“So yes, everyone comes on and says I am here to find love and that, yes you kind of are and obviously that is unreal but nobody is daft.”

Shocking moment ‘landlord lunges at tenant with CIRCULAR SAW after ripping through front door’ in row over unpaid rent
THIS is the shocking moment a landlord appears to lunge at his tenant with a circular saw after ripping through the front door in a rent row.
A terrified Muhammed Raheel captured the crazed moment on Monday lunchtime.

He launched it at tenant Muhammed[/caption]
The surgeon started filming from inside his flat in Galway, Ireland, when his landlord started cutting through the door with the power tool.
Unlocking his home to see what madness was happening outside, Muhammed can be heard telling the man “stay back I’m going to call the police“.
The dad-of-two was then forced to take cover when his landlord launched the saw at him as it whirled around.
Pleading for him to stop, Muhammed shouted: “You cannot do this, please.”
Muhammed said if his wife had not helped pull him back in that moment, “anything could have happened”.
He said: “I have been up all night with my wife and our daughters, 1 and 3, awake with worry that he would return with another weapon.”
The horrifying incident, where the landlord can be heard threatening “no matter where you go in this life I will follow you”, is allegedly over unpaid rent.
Muhammed told The Journal his payments had been bouncing back when he tried transferring them across.
However, claims he kept the money to one side for when the landlord contacted him.
He said: “I kept trying every month and put the money aside so I would have it there when he got in touch.
“I didn’t hear from him for months. Then, on March 28, my wife called me from home and said I had to come right away, because someone was drilling outside.”
Muhammed said he had to rush out of the operating room to head home where he found the locks being changed.
Nearly one month on, the landlord took matters into his own hands inflicting the horrifying ordeal on the Raheel family.
Muhammed said the “little” response he got from cops was “painful” and left him fearing for his family’s safety.
He added: “I felt like my family and I were offered no protection, and we were deeply worried he would come back.”
The local force said: “Enquiries are ongoing at this time.”

Patti LuPone reveals the shocking reason she’s not in ‘Schmigadoon!’
Apple TV+’s Schmigadoon! is a delirious dream for theater kids, combining playful parodies of a slew of major musicals with an ensemble cast stuffed with Broadway stars. Incredibly; however, Patti LuPone, one of the celebrated living legends of the Great White Way, was denied a chance to join in.
LuPone is currently enjoying a flood of praise for her riveting performance in Ari Aster’s latest mindbending A24 movie, Beau Is Afraid. In an interview with Mashable, she describes her part in the film as “the best role I’ve ever had on camera.” However, LuPone also shared her sadness over being rejected by a producer of Schmigadoon!.
Season 2 (aka Schmicago) spoofs the songs of Stephen Sondheim, with whom LuPone has worked repeatedly and iconically in shows like Company and Sweeney Todd. So, Mashable asked if she’d been approached about the musical TV series. In fact, she approached the show first for Season 1.
“I wanted to be in Schmigadoon!, and I was too old,” LuPone said. Asked what she meant, she responded, “Exactly what I said. We reached out to them and said I want to be in Schmigadoon!. They said, ‘Sorry. You’re too old.'”
“It’s so sad. And it’s depressing,” she said of the rejection, before declaring, “It’s their loss! I don’t know what else to say. I so wanted to be in it!”
LuPone is 73, the same age as Martin Short, who appears in Seasons 1 and 2 of Schmigadoon!.
Mashable has reached out for comment to Apple TV+.
