Dead Island 2 review: a HELL-A zany take on the co-op zombie shooter
Dead Island 2 starts in the sun-soaked and blood-drenched City of Angels, but there are no angels here. Brain-dead, ravenous zombies govern this city, now casually called HELL-A. You awaken aboard an aeroplane that has succumbed to the plague of zombies, and with merely the clothes on your back and an immunity to the undead’s slavering bites, you need to escape from HELL-A. Even if you have to become every other survivor’s middle man in the process.
As you trek across HELL-A, you explore mansions galore, approach the surprisingly well-maintained sewers with the utmost intrepidity, and even get to make your mark on Hollywood Boulevard. In spite of its flaws and quirks (and there are so, so many), Dead Island 2 does exactly what it needed to do just under a decade ago when it was first announced, and what it needed to do now, at launch: it provides mindless, zombie-slaying fun in an environment seething with life, vibrancy, and eccentric charm. Incredibly life-like warts and all.
Dead Island 2 has the same fundamentals as its predecessor – visceral disfigurement, brainless hard-as-nails zombies, and a Tarantino-like obsession with gore – and dresses them up in a package that feels fit for 2023. The setting you find yourself adventuring across is stunning, dialogue is cringe albeit well-grounded, and yes, there are a few glitches here and there. I expected nothing more, and nothing less, and ultimately finished Dead Island 2 satisfied with my experience.
Terror suspect who went on ‘active shooter’ course in Poland banned from returning to Britain
A TERROR suspect who went on an “active shooter” course in Poland has been banned from returning to Britain.
The 37-year-old man was stripped of his Brit citizenship after MI5 warned he was “a threat to UK national security”.

The Krav Maga Urban Extreme Active Shooter course advertised that it could improve people’s “shooting fundamentals”.
The Islamist fanatic — born in an undisclosed non-European country — already had serious convictions for firearms and drugs offences.
His citizenship was revoked in 2021 and the Special Immigration Appeals Commission rejected his appeal.
The Home Office said it was “pleased” that the SIAC found in its favour.
He came to the UK in 2000 and was given UK citizenship two years later before completing his education at a South London secondary school.
But he fell into a life of crime and was jailed for three years and four months in 2007 for supplying Class A drugs.
In 2009, after his release from prison he was arrested fleeing a car which crashed after a police chase.
Officers found a blank-firing pistol fitted with an improvised barrel – with a round of live ammunition in the breach and five more in its magazine – near the car.
EA’s magic shooter ‘Immortals of Aveum’ arrives July 20th
A studio full of video game veterans is about to release its first big project. Ascendant Studios and EA have confirmed they’re releasing the magic first person shooter Immortals of Aveum on July 20th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Windows PCs. You play a new battlemage who’s thrust into a never-ending war for control of the world’s magic.
This isn’t Call of Duty with spells, though, or even a revival of classic fantasy shooters like Heretic. Immortals revolves around a combination system that rewards mixing up different magic types to defeat enemies. You can also draw on magical abilities to create shields or turn the environment against your foes. Ascendant is also promising a narrative-focused experience with an extensive backstory, not to mention recognizable voices like Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever) and Gina Torres (Firefly).
Ascendant is part of a wave of indie studios formed by departing leaders at major game developers. It’s helmed by Bret Robbins, the creative director from the original Dead Space, who formed Ascendant in 2018 with Immortals in mind. The team also includes former Telltale Games workers as well as people behind well-known games like Spider-Man and Tomb Raider. Like other well-known exiles, Robbins and crew are effectively trying to regain creative control — even if they’re still publishing through major brands.

XDefiant preview: A perfectly serviceable hero shooter that does nothing to alleviate FPS fatigue
XDefiant is the latest arena shooter effort from Ubisoft, hoping to provide a fast-paced first-person shooter experience to anyone that likes the idea of diversifying their play styles, or has recently tired of Call of Duty and gotten a taste for all that sanitised military nonsense.
During a two-hour session with XDefiant, I was able to try out each of the distinct Factions and game modes on offer. I also had the chance to mess around with the array of weapons (though, in two hours, you never get to personalise your loadout as much as you’d like). So, only time will tell as to how powerful or loadout-transforming weapon attachments can be – and what sort of meta emerges.
Factions consist of characters and utility curated from the ranks of Ubisoft’s best series; Far Cry 6, Ghost Recon Phantoms, Watch Dogs 2, The Division, and more. The maps on offer also take direct inspiration from the breadth of Ubisoft titles, and are the highlight of the game, frankly.
Ubisoft’s arena shooter XDefiant needs to do more to stand out from the crowd
After two hours of XDefiant, I came away with a rather different thought in my mind than I expected. More than anything, I was impressed at just how good we have it in the multiplayer FPS genre at the moment. Apex Legends, Warzone 2, Overwatch 2, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege. That’s some unbelievably tough competition. XDefiant has to either give players something completely different, or absolutely nail the basics. It’s opted for the second path, and having played several matches against a medley of press people and content creators, I’m not convinced Ubisoft’s new arena shooter is up to the challenge.
