How to Handle Web Sites Asking for Your Email Address
[I]t can be linked to other data, including where you went to school, the make and model of the car you drive, and your ethnicity….
For many years, the digital ad industry has compiled a profile on you based on the sites you visit on the web…. An email could contain your first and last name, and assuming you’ve used it for some time, data brokers have already compiled a comprehensive profile on your interests based on your browsing activity. A website or an app can upload your email address into an ad broker’s database to match your identity with a profile containing enough insights to serve you targeted ads.
The article recommends creating several email addresses to “make it hard for ad tech companies to compile a profile based on your email handle… Apple and Mozilla offer tools that automatically create email aliases for logging in to an app or a site; emails sent to the aliases are forwarded to your real email address.”
Apple’s Hide My Email tool, which is part of its iCloud+ subscription service that costs 99 cents a month, will create aliases, but using it will make it more difficult to log in to the accounts from a non-Apple device. Mozilla’s Firefox Relay will generate five email aliases at no cost; beyond that, the program charges 99 cents a month for additional aliases.
For sites using the UID 2.0 framework for ad targeting, you can opt out by entering your email address [or phone number] at https://transparentadvertising.org.

Punters visiting black market online gambling sites tripled during the World Cup
THE number of punters visiting black market online gambling sites tripled during the World Cup, research shows.
A total of 250,000 used unregulated overseas firms during the tournament — up from 80,000 in the same period in 2021.
The betting industry says it takes under 30 seconds to sign up to a black market site compared to 12 minutes for a regulated UK operator.
It comes as ministers prepare to publish a gambling white paper.
Michael Dugher, CEO at the Betting and Gaming Council, said punters face a “dire threat” from “the growing unsafe, unregulated black market”.
He said the regulated industry worked hard to protect young people during the World Cup by adhering to strict regulations while black market operators “preyed on the vulnerable”.
He added: “While the regulated industry was going to great lengths to protect young people during the World Cup and adhering to strict regulations and promoting safer gambling, black market operators were preying on the vulnerable.
“These unlicensed sites offer none of the safer gambling tools promoted by our members, they pay no tax and employ no one, they do not contribute a penny to sport or services tackling gambling harm.
“Rather than dismissing the problem, the regulator and the Government need to tread extremely carefully and resist blanket intrusive affordability checks at low levels that push even more punters to these dangerous sites.”
He praised the research by Yield Sec, a US-based licensed gaming marketplace.
Britain has yet to rule out giving Ukraine long-range Harpoon cruise missiles to target Russian launch sites
BRITAIN has yet to rule out giving Ukraine Harpoon cruise missiles — which can hit targets deeper inside Russia.
Hundreds of the weapons, due to be retired by the Royal Navy this year, are up for grabs.
The UK’s Harpoon cruise missiles have a maximum range of 240km – six times further than the most powerful GMLRS rockets supplied by Britain so far.
They could target launch sites Russia uses to hit Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Defence Minister Baroness Goldie said: “The UK has not ruled out the possibility of providing longer range weapons to counter Russia’s indiscriminate mass targeting of civilian infrastructure.”
She insisted UK weapons were used “in accordance with international humanitarian law”.
Baroness Goldie added: “We liaise on a daily basis with the Ukrainian Government, and they are clear that equipment provided by the UK is intended for the defence of Ukraine.”
The UK has led the way with a promise of 14 Challenger 2 tanks on top of thousands of anti-tank, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles.
A defence source said could donate Harpoons or buy in missiles from third countries.
Ex-PM Boris Johnson last night said the West should provide longer-range aircraft.
