Quantum entanglement will make quantum internet “unhackable” thanks to quantum steering
Professor Mehul Malik has been studying quantum technologies for 15 years. With his team at Heriot-Watt’s Institute of Photonic and Quantum Sciences, Malik has conceived a new way to send quantum information on optical fibers – a way that helps avoid data loss and brings the concept of quantum internet…
Tesla recalls over 40,000 cars to address power steering flaw
Tesla has at least one more recall in store this year, if not as large as the last one. As BBC Newsreports, the EV maker has recalled 40,168 Model S and Model X vehicles over a software defect that can reduce or cut power steering assistance when the car mistakenly treats potholes and other bumps in the road as steering assist torque. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is concerned the sudden loss of help could be jarring enough to lead to a crash.
The flaw affects model years 2017 through 2021 for both cars, and first appeared with the 2022.36 firmware update. As with some of Tesla’s recalls, the fix involves a software patch that has already rolled out. Over 97 percent of affected vehicles already have the new code, Tesla says.
This is the 17th recall Tesla has issued in 2022. It’s not nearly as far-reaching as a September recall over faulty power window functionality, which affected almost 1.1 million cars in the US. Combined, however, the glitches have affected about 3.4 million EVs across the company’s lineup. They’ve included problems with seat belt chimes, overheating infotainment systems and a Full Self Driving bug that let vehicles roll through stop signs. The company also had to change its Boombox feature over worries the external audio playback could override mandatory low-speed sounds.
The power steering defect also comes at a difficult moment for Tesla. The company’s stock value has dropped sharply in recent weeks as investors fear Elon Musk’s Twitter purchase may have distracted the entrepreneur. Tesla stock is hovering around $190 as we write this — lower than it was in May 2021. Factor in a tumultuous third quarter and it’s clear the brand has lost some confidence, even if its sales are still very healthy.
James Gunn Will Co-Lead DC Studios, Steering Upcoming DCEU Movies, Shows, And Cartoons
With former DC Film president Walter Hamada officially out of the company, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been named to lead DC’s film, TV, and animation projects as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, which was formerly DC Films.
The succession of Gunn and Safran ends a month-long search for the recently-merged Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav, who had been looking for a “Kevin Feige” type figure to run that part of the studio. Gunn commented on his new position, but simply tweeting his excitement for things to come, albeit brief.
Accurate. So pleased to be here. #DC pic.twitter.com/KpvdME4Pju
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) October 25, 2022
Gunn and Safran will now helm all of the development and execution of a long-term plan for many of the characters and properties of DC Comics. In addition to those responsibilities, Gunn and Safran will develop, direct, and produce their own projects.
Steering Defect Forces Tech Darling Rivian to Recall Nearly Every Car Its Ever Made
Rivian, the Amazon-backed electric vehicle upstart and long-rumored Tesla killer once valued at $100 billion just had to recall nearly every vehicle it’s ever made.
Rivian recalls 13,000 EVs due to potential steering control problem
Rivian has notified customers that it’s recalling 13,000 EVs — or almost all of the electric trucks and SUVs it has ever delivered — due to an issue that could render drivers unable to steer and control their vehicles. The company issued the recall after becoming aware of seven reports wherein a fastener connecting the steering knuckle to the vehicle’s upper control arm “may not have been sufficiently torqued,” according to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.
In the letter sent to customers, Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe said the company is recalling vehicles despite the small number of reported defects “out of an abundance of caution.” He said the fastener could become loose in “rare circumstances” and lead to loss of steering control, but that there had been no reported injuries related to the issue.
At the moment, Rivian has two models on offer, which are the R1T truck and the R1S SUV, but it also makes electric delivery trucks for its minority owner Amazon at its factory in Normal, Illinois. Like most players in the auto and tech industries, the global supply chain woes over the past couple of years impacted its production capability. It even tried to raise the price of its R1T pickup truck by $12,000 due to inflation and component shortages earlier this year, though it quickly reversed the decision after customer backlash.
In July 2022, the automaker reported that it had almost doubled its production output to 4,401 vehicles for the second quarter of the year compared to the first. That’s a fraction of other automakers’ output — rival company Tesla, for instance, manufactured 258,580 EVs within the same period — but it’s a positive step towards achieving its goal of producing 25,000 vehicles in 2022.
This recall isn’t expected to prevent the company from reaching that goal, and the automaker is hoping that it can check all affected vehicles within 30 days. Rivian told customers that they can bring their vehicles to service centers to have the fasteners in their vehicles tightened within minutes. The company also said that they can send mobile repair vans to customers. Those experiencing possible symptoms for the issue, such as noise and vibration, may want to look into that option.
Rivian recalls more than 12,000 vehicles due to potential steering loss
According to Rivian’s safety recall, the potential issue affects all 2022 Rivian R1T, R1S, and electric delivery vehicle (EDV) units as well as EDVs manufactured between September 2021 and December 2022. The EV manufacturer could not confirm that vehicles produced during these periods had a properly torqued fastener between the…
Rivian recalls over 12,000 EVs over loose fastener that could affect steering
Rivian’s recalling 12,212 electric vehicles (EVs) over a loose fastener that could affect drivers’ ability to control the car (via CNBC). The recall affects nearly every vehicle Rivian has produced this year, and spans the carmaker’s entire lineup, covering certain 2022 R1T pickup trucks, R1S SUVs, as well as the electric delivery vans (EDVs) it’s building for Amazon. Rivian produced a total of 14,317 vehicles in the first three quarters of 2022 and delivered over 12,000.
According to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fastener connecting the front upper control arm and steering knuckle may not have been “sufficiently torqued.” This could potentially result in separation, “causing a loss…
