Google unveils AI updates for Workspace collaboration suite
At its annual I/O conference, Google today announced a number of AI-infused upgrades to its Workspace suite of office tools and applications for business teams to use in collaborating on projects.
As a competitor to Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, Google announced Duet AI, which offers a number of generative AI tools for Google’s productivity apps within Workspace. Duet AI offers assistance in writing text in Google Docs and Gmail, as well as help with image generation for Slides, a PowerPoint-like slide presentation program. Duet AI can also summarize conversations on Google Meet, a video conferencing service.
Huawei Claims To Have Built Its Own 14nm Chip Design Suite
Today, the EDA market is largely controlled by three companies: California-based Synopsys and Cadence, as well as Germany’s Siemens. According to the industry watchers at TrendForce, these three companies account for roughly 75 percent of the EDA market. And this poses a problem for Chinese chipmakers and foundries, which have steadily found themselves cut off from these tools. Synopsys and Cadence’s EDA tech is already subject to several of these export controls, which were stiffened by the US Commerce Department last summer to include state-of-the-art gate-all-around (GAA) transistors. This January, the White House also reportedly stopped issuing export licenses to companies supplying the likes of Huawei.
This is particularly troublesome for Huawei, foundry operator SMIC, and memory vendor YMTC to name a few on the US Entity List, a roster of companies Uncle Sam would prefer you not to do business with. It leaves them unable to access recent and latest technologies, at the very least. So the development of a homegrown EDA platform for 14nm chips serves as insurance in case broader access to Western production platforms is cut off entirely.

Microsoft Intune Suite consolidates endpoint management and protection
Microsoft has launched the general availability of Microsoft Intune Suite, a consolidation of its endpoint management and security solutions to streamline protection for cloud-connected and on-premises endpoints.
The consolidation is aimed to serve as a single vendor for all endpoint security needs for the customers to have single analytics, rather than multiple disparate datasets, with a consistent visibility to potential vulnerabilities and anomalies, according to a company blog post.
Primate Labs Launches Geekbench 6 Benchmarking Suite
The updated software navigates away from heavy reliance on pure single-threaded CPU numbers, with machine learning and other workloads changing the way that benchmarks need to work. Testing datasets have been replaced to better “reflect modern hardware and applications.”
- Bigger photos in resolutions captured by modern smartphones (12 to 48MP)
- HTML examples representative of modern web design standards
- A larger library of images for import tests
- Larger maps for navigation tests
- Bigger and more modern PDF examples
- An increase in Clang workload size.
Primate Labs says that the tests are able to better represent the file types customers are likely to use or interact with in 2023, and are closer to workloads used by apps. Geekbench 6 has been updated to take better advantage of the GPU for machine learning for more accurate cross-platform comparisons.
Multi-core benchmarking has been overhauled and is designed to measure how cores share workloads in true-to-life workload examples, and there are a number of new tests that measure how people use devices. Existing tests have been updated as well.
- Background blur, as during video conferences
- Photo filters, similar to those used by modern social media apps
- Object detection for AI workloads
- Photo library for importing and semantic tagging photos and metadata
- Text processing for parsing and converting things like markdown and regex in Python (more true to real developer use cases)
Geekbench 6 is free for all non-commercial personal use, while the Pro version of the software is priced at $79 for the next two weeks thanks to a 20 percent launch discount. Pro functionality adds command-line automation, offline result management, and more. Geekbench 6 can be downloaded from the Geekbench website.
