Emergency services rushed to LNER football stadium shortly after the full-time whistle blew.
Paramedics treated Anton at the scene but sadly nothing could be done to save him.
The cause of his death is not yet known.
Barnsley FC have since released a statement saying they are “deeply saddened” by the news and will be honouring the fan during Saturday’s game against Oxford.
The club said: “Barnsley Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a supporter at Tuesday night’s fixture against Lincoln City.
“Anton Roberts received treatment from emergency services outside of the LNER Stadium following the game, but devastatingly, passed away last night.
“The club has been liaising with and will continue to support the family and friends of Mr Roberts through this exceptionally difficult time, whilst asking for their privacy to be respected.
“We encourage all supporters to join in the 61st-minute applause at Oakwell on Saturday in our game against Oxford United.
“Once a Red, Always a Red.”
Lincoln City FC also paid their respects.
They tweeted: “Everyone at Lincoln City offers their condolences to the friends and family of Anton Roberts.
“Our thanks to the first responders and emergency services who were quickly on scene for their efforts.”
It comes just days after the news a Crystal Palace fan died from severe brain injuries.
Liam Foley was hit by a bus and killed as he celebrated his team’s win against Leicester City in Brixton, South London, at the start of the month.
And last Thursday, a West Ham supporter passed away when he was struck by a train.
The Hammers fan, 57, was in the Belgian city of Ghent for the UEFA Conference League clash when he died.
Supporter podcast – The Nate Files episode 14: eggs is eggs
Can you hear that gentle rapping, tapping at your chamber door? ‘Tis some visitor tapping at your chamber door – only this, and nothing more!
No it isn’t. It’s the Nate Files bonus podcast, funded by our supporters supporters, and we have an egg for you. Quoth the egg “Yolk!”
Here are all the RPS supporter articles available to both Standard and Premium subscribers
At the beginning of November, we announced we were going to write a bumper crop of supporter articles for the month to celebrate the launch of our new introductory offer on our monthly Standard subscriptions. Normally, these exclusive supporter articles are reserved for our Premium subscription tier, but because we wanted to give those Standard introductory folks a taste of what Premium has to offer as well, we decided to make a bunch of them visible to all subscribers.
About a week into November, we realised that we didn’t have a very good way of flagging which of those articles Standard subscribers could actually read (our bad), and due to a combination of holidays, illness and general busy-ness, we completely failed to come up with a solution. Apologies! To remedy that, I’ve now listed all of them below. Enjoy!
Annual RPS supporter memberships are now 25% off for Black Friday week
Until November 30th, we’re shaving 25% off the price of our yearly Premium and Standard supporter subscriptions. Why, I hear you ask? It’s Black Friday week, of course! And what would a good Black Friday be without us getting in on the deals action, too? All you need to do is head over to our sign up page, and pick the subscription that suits you best.
Supporter podcast – The Nate Files episode 13: dry bones
A thousand apologies, friends, for the gap in your Nate Files timeline. Unfortunately, while on a deep sea dive to retrieve the tapes of episodes 13 and 14 (an expedition funded by supporters; your generosity is always appreciated), my ship was attacked by a large and unusually toothsome whale-like creature. The cursed thing took a huge bite out of the side of our noble vessel, The Squiggled Egg, and we were forced to abandon ship. It was only by the grace of the botswain Hughbert Threads that I’m alive to write this post today, as the man gave his life beating back the foul beast, giving a large part of the rest of the crew time to get away. Alas, in the confusion, I only secured episode 14, and episode 13 is now lost to time. That is definitely what happened, and not that the digital recording got mangled somehow.
Still, episode 14 (which is now episode 13, even though I say 14 in the recording) is now here for you to enjoy. It’s all about bad and obsolete palaeontology – the weird ways people in history interpreted fossils, and why.
