The Rust September update adds a brutal new mode to the survival game
The big Rust September update is just around the corner, adding a brutal new mode to the survival game and streamlining some of the crafting interfaces. There’s also a few smaller changes on the way, such as alterations to how you access the clan menu and some model and texture improvements, including a more realistic-looking campfire and big flashing light switches, which is handy if you *checks notes* find yourself never being able to see light switches.

Saturnalia’s neon-folk survival horror will stick to you for a very long time
We’ve got a pretty good line in interesting folk traditions here at RPS. I grew up in a county where staying up all night at the stone circle to welcome the Summer Solstice was an annual tradition (later augmented by a woman wearing antlers offering a selection of downers and hallucinogens), and as a child I had an unnecessary encounter with the Salisbury Hob-Nob. For the past few years Alice0 has gone to the Burryman’s Parade, gracing us with pictures of that most wholesome gentleman. Rural traditions are fun if you’re part of them, but to outsiders they can be unsettling at best.
This is relevant to my thinking about Saturnalia, an upcoming survival horror game by Italian studio Santa Ragione, where a small group of outsiders try to escape a village on the night of an ancient ritual. I’ve been playing a preview build of Saturnalia for the last week or so, and also got to talk about it with the studio director Pietro Righi Riva. “I usually tell people, ‘Oh, you should make a game in like six months’, and I have tried to do that in the past,” he tells me. “This one just kind of got out of hand. I found an email yesterday, as I was looking for finishing the credits, about me discussing some story items in April 2017.” And, while I am sure that most developers don’t wish they’d been making a video game in the middle of the pandemic, I think the extra time may have allowed Santa Ragione to make something excellent.
Stranded: Alien Dawn is a familiar survival sim with room to grow
Stranded: Alien Dawn is Haemimont Games’ second sci-fi sim on the trot, and despite being set on a planet that actually has air this time, it could well make Surviving Mars’ well-funded colony building feel like an afternoon playing with Lego. In Stranded, as I saw from a hands-off preview at Gamescom 2022, you’re certainly not planetside by choice, having crash-landed on an uncharted world with just four surviving astronauts left to scavenge, hunt and build their way towards something resembling a life.
“Like RimWorld”, I thought to myself upon hearing the pre-demo pitch, and subsequently wrote in my notes four separate times before ceasing to bother. If only mere words could convey just how much “like RimWorld” Stranded: Alien Dawn is – other 3D-ified clones exist, like last year’s Going Medieval, but here, even the exact spaceship-wrecking premise matches that of Ludeon Studios’ seminal survival sim.
Earth: Revival hands-on – 5 reasons you should be excited for this multiplayer open world sci-fi survival game
There are games that pit you against the elements in tough battles for survival, such as Rust, DayZ, and Valheim. Then there are games that take you on a grand sci-fi adventure with your friends, like Destiny and Outriders. But what if there was a game that let you do both? Enter Earth: Revival, an ambitious blend of survival gaming and shared-world shooting, that takes place on Earth following an alien invasion. We’ve taken Nuverse’s intriguing hybrid for a spin, and jotted down five reasons why you should be excited about Earth: Revival.
Earth: Revival’s takes place in the shadow of global catastrophe, with a setting that blends near-future sci-fi and post-apocalyptic storytelling. Set in 2112, Earth: Revival takes place on a ravaged and destroyed planet Earth, a result of an intergalactic conflict with a mysterious alien species. As Survivors of the war against the aliens, players will fight to reclaim Earth and restore what was lost.
The world of Earth: Revival is vast, diverse and dangerous. On their journey, players will explore numerous open environments, from a rid deserts to snow-filled valleys to dense, futuristic cityscapes. But don’t be fooled by what beauty Earth still retains. Its wildernesses are intensely hostile, with players contending against acid-rain, sandstorms and clouds of alien spores. Cities, meanwhile, are prowled by gangs and mercenary factions. To survive, you must gather resources and utilise 3D printing technology to create useful items and equipment, ranging from crucial survival gear to vehicles that help them traverse the world more easily. You’ll also need to manage your basic bodily needs, cooking food to maintain energy, purifying water to avoid becoming sick, and building cabins for shelter and as a base of operations.

Survival game Stranded: Alien Dawn Early Access set for October
A new survival game is on the way, this one coming from the developers of sci-fi city-builder Surviving Mars. The Stranded: Alien Dawn Early Access release date is set for this October, and the game challenges you to lead a small band of survivors who find themselves marooned on a beautiful but hostile alien planet.
Marauders is a sci-fi survival FPS with space scavenging and spaceship dogfights
One of the briefer — but nonetheless exciting — games shown off during Gamescom early this week was Marauders. This multiplayer survival looter FPS has you venture out into space to scavenge for supplies, fending off other players as you try your best to make off with a nice haul.
Releasing into Steam Early Access in October 2022, players keen to jump in even earlier can take part in a series of technical tests during September between September 6-14. More information on these tests will be present on the official Marauders developer blog.
Narrative-wise, it’s got an interesting premise. The game is set in an alternative 1980s where World War 1 never ended. As a result the world has been over-industrialised to near destruction, forcing some to venture out to space as a better alternative to the war-torn world below.
