Twitter will now remember your tab preference on Android and iOS
When Twitter introduced its curated “For You” tab at the start of this year, the feature shipped with an oversight. If you closed the Twitter app or web client after switching to the platform’s reverse chronological “Following” timeline, both would default back to the For You feed after you came back. At the end of January, Twitter took an initial step to address that oversight, tweaking the web client to remember the tab you left off at before closing your tabs. At the time, the company said a similar fix was “coming soon” for Android and iOS. That fix is now available.

Today’s change won’t bring back Twitter’s old “twinkle” button, but it does let you stick to your preferred timeline. And if you primarily use Twitter to follow real-world events, it should make it easier to use the app for that purpose. Notably, the change to Twitter’s interface coincides with the company’s recent decision to cut off third-party clients. That move led to apps like Tweetbot shutting down, leaving the official client the only way to access Twitter.
Spotify’s test of a Friends tab on mobile hints at expanded social ambitions
Spotify’s success with Wrapped, its year-end review, designed for social sharing, may be pushing the company toward building more social experiences directly into its mobile app. The company for many months has been testing different iterations of a “friends activity” tab on its mobile app, and investors have now taken notice. During the streamer’s Q4 […]

Twitter makes it easier to avoid the annoying ‘For You’ tab
Don’t worry if you hate Twitter’s curated For You tab, as you now have a better way to avoid it. Twitter is updating its web and mobile apps to default to the timeline tab you last had open. If you close the app after looking at the chronological Following tab like a sensible human being, you’ll see it again when you come back. The tab default is rolling out today on the web, and “coming soon” to the Android and iOS apps.
This won’t revert to the old “twinkle” button that saved space. It does let you stick to your preferred timeline, though. This could be particularly helpful if you want to follow time-sensitive events (one of the main reasons many people use Twitter) and would rather not switch tabs every time you check your feed.
Were any of you (all of you) asking for your timeline to default to where you left it last?

For You is an algorithmically generated feed that highlights certain tweets based on the users and conversations Twitter believes are relevant to you. While this can surface slightly older posts you might have missed, it also tends to bury content from some users and makes it difficult to follow live events.
The update comes as Twitter faces criticism of its approach to clients following Elon Musk’s acquisition last year. The social network now bans third-party clients, forcing developers to shut down popular apps and pivot to rival services like Mastodon. Many of those apps gave users more control over their timeline view and otherwise helped users dodge common Twitter annoyances. This change won’t likely satisfy fans of alternative apps. It might, however, reduce the sting of being force to use official software.
Instagram finally drops the shopping tab from its news feed to focus on content
Instagram Is Ditching the Shopping Tab
Instagram announced on Monday that it’s removing the Shop tab from its app, revealing a new navigation bar on the way. The change will come next month and will redirect the Reels tab (because everyone loves Reels!) to the bottom of the screen to replace the Shop tab in addition to the new post button, which will also…
Instagram’s redesigned home screen ditches the shopping tab
Were you irked that Instagram’s shopping obsession relegated the “new post” button to a corner? You’re not alone. Instagram has revealed a home screen refresh, due in February, that axes the Shop tab and moves the Create button back to the center of the bottom navigation bar. That, in turn, shunts the Reels tab to the side.
The social network’s Adam Mosseri added in a video that shopping will still exist in your feed, Reels, Stories and ads. There just won’t be a dedicated tab for it. The section usually offers targeted recommendations to encourage shopping beyond the usual mid-feed offerings.
Instagram started testing the new design in September. In a video announcing the rollout, Mosseri characterized the refresh as a bid to “simplify” the service and focus on connecting people to the “things they love.” Insta is remembering that it’s a social network, to put it bluntly.
However, the change may also be part of a larger strategy shakeup. As The Vergenotes, The Informationclaimed to have seen an internal memo in September indicating that Instagram would cut many of its shopping features. Instead, the site would concentrate on commerce efforts that are “more directly tied” to ad revenue. Simply put, the shopping push doesn’t appear to have helped — this would boost Meta’s bottom line as it pivots to the metaverse.
There’s also the matter of competition. TikTok, the inspiration for numerous Instagram features, still features a prominent “new post” button. That placement isn’t a guarantee of success, of course, but that platform has continued to thrive in spite of Instagram. It had about 1.64 billion monthly active users as of October, according to Data.ai figures. The Instagram rethink might encourage more posts, not to mention give would-be converts a more familiar experience.
