How Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow’s Tactical Soul System Inspired A New Generation Of Metroidvanias
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is celebrating its 20-year anniversary today, May 6, 2023. Below, we look back at how the successor to Symphony of the Night is still influencing the genre.
From the Souls-ian hack-and-slash of Blasphemous to the pastel beauty of the Ori series, the sheer volume of metroidvanias in today’s gaming market can overwhelm even the most die-hard enthusiast. But while most fans will always correctly consider Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as the most influential entry in Konami’s lauded series, there were other games that had a big effect on today’s metroidvanias–and I would argue 2003’s Aria of Sorrow is the best of them.
Aria of Sorrow is the third Castlevania game for Game Boy Advance, though it’s much more memorable than its two predecessors. It’s the fourth “Igavania”-style entry in the series, meaning that it has the same exploration and RPG mechanics first inaugurated by Symphony of the Night and designer Koji Igarashi. Its grand new innovation, the Tactical Soul system, would be the next step forward for the franchise, and it’s a mechanic that’s inspired many of the metroidvanias that have emerged over the years.

RPS@PAX 2023: We chat with Necrosoft Games about their spooky-not-scary tactical horror RPG Demonschool
It’s day one of PAX East and what better way to kick off our show coverage than highlighting a great indie game! We first came across Demonschool back at PAX West last year and have loved it ever since. It’s a slick, tactical Persona-like where you play as a band of university students navigating school life by day and beating up ghosties and ghoulies by night.
I had a chat with Demonschool’s Jenna Stoeber who talked me through what Demonschool is about, the game’s many horror inspirations, and what spooky shinanigans players can expect. If the giant skeleton lad in the game’s trailer and demo is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat. You can watch the full interview by watching the video below:
If you’ve haven’t yet, set your peepers on Demonschool’s slick trailer to see what demon hunter Faye and her gang of misfits are up against. There’s no concrete release date, but like Jenna said, Demonschool should be out sometime in 2023 with a playable demo available in May.
We’ve got plenty more interviews, demos, and highlights lined up for the rest of the week and you can find all our PAX East coverage by checking out our RPS@PAX tag.
Miasma Chronicles mixes XCOM with a fresh take on tactical RPGs
Upcoming tactical RPG game Miasma Chronicles has a lot of impressive influences. The dark, bleak aesthetic feels very XCOM. The turn-based combat is like classic Final Fantasy. Created by Bearded Ladies, of the 2018 RPG Mutant Year Zero, there’s even a slight hint of Hitman, many of the developers having previously worked on IO’s stealth series. But as we get confirmation of the Miasma Chronicles release date, there’s an interesting mechanic, hidden in Bearded Ladies’ latest, that may set it apart from the RPG and deckbuilding crowd.
