‘Glimmer Man’ Follows Mischievous Teens in Michigan Neighborhood
A teen in Lake Orion, Michigan is with a group of kids playing ding-dong-ditch in a residential area. After one of the episodes, the teen and a friend are aware of a translucent human-like figure following them.
The following account was forwarded to me:
“I was 13 years old in Lake Orion, Michigan, visiting my mom’s friends and their kids for the fourth of July weekend. I and a friend and their kids were roaming around the city area late at night. We ended up walking down some residential roads, it was really quiet and dead out, probably around 2 am, with no cars driving around. Just that really calm peaceful time at night when hooligans can run wild. Some of the kids wanted to ding-dong-ditch some houses, and I was kind of a straight-edged kid, so I went along with it even though it made me nervous.
We had ding-dong-ditched probably 5 houses at that point, and the kids started pressuring me to do it. That it was my turn, don’t be such a p*ssy type of stuff. So, they directed me to ring the doorbell of the house we were standing in front of. It was a smaller white house, square-shaped, with some metal fencing around the back for the owner’s dogs. I walked up and there was no doorbell, so I walked back. They told me to “just knock then!” So, as someone who didn’t want to kill the fun, I went back and knocked to find they had already taken off running.
I ran after them, and I don’t know if I believe what they were saying, but even my friend said they saw it. Apparently, there was a face in the window the first time I went up, and the house is notoriously haunted. I was a little spooked, and out of breath, we must have run half a mile.
I looked behind me to see if there was anything scary following us and I saw this figure that I have always described as looking made out of water. A humanoid figure is translucent, which makes the background behind them wavy and has a defined outline. I figured my mind was playing tricks on me and just kept walking joking around with the others, looking back every so often. It was following us, and I could see it under the streetlamps occasionally. The leader kid, that wanted to ding-dong-ditch houses, looked to see what I was looking at and exclaimed to his friend, “Do you see that?” and took off running. My friend looked back and took off running, and I was again left running after them. We ran all the way back to his house, probably three miles. No sign of it behind us anymore, but I have never been so shaken or scared in my entire life. I was inconsolable.
I was scared for a while. I would see it again and find out it had been following me the entire time. It’s been over 10 years now, and I’ve never seen anything like that again, and I’ve never been able to find anything like it searching for hours on the internet, until recently.” SS

We need to smash the stereotype that hackers are all teens in hoodies
The typical image of a hacker is wrong, writes WithSecure’s Tom Van de Wiele. This is an issue because many businesses could benefit from skilled, ethical hackers.

Instagram was fined $402 million for mishandling teens’ data in the EU
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined Meta €405 million (about $402 million) after an investigation into how it handled teenagers’ data. The decision and fine were finalized last Friday, DPC spokesperson Caolmhe McGuire tells The Verge, and “full details of the decision will publish next week.”
The DPC’s deadline for making a final decision on this matter was the end of this week. The investigation leading started almost two years ago, and focused on two ways in which the company allegedly breached GDPR rules. The first was Instagram allowing young users, ages 13-17, to set up business accounts on the platform, which made those users’ contact information publicly available. (Users sometimes switch to business accounts because…
Instagram tightens default content settings for teens
Instagram announced the platform is rolling out a feature that defaults accounts for new users under 16 years old to “Less,” the most restrictive setting for Sensitive Content Control. Teenagers already on Instagram will get push notifications “encouraging” them to opt-in to the heavier filtering on what the algorithm shows them across Search, Explore, Hashtag Pages, Reels, Feed Recommendations, and Suggested Accounts.
The “Standard” setting in Instagram only lets users see some content deemed sensitive, while the “Less” option tightens the restrictions even further, and the “More” option allows users to see more sensitive content or accounts than the default settings. While users over 18 years old typically have access to “Standard,”…

Teens have abandoned Facebook, Pew study says
A fifth of US teens use YouTube ‘almost constantly,’ with TikTok not far behind
Pew Research has published a new report that examines social media usage trends among US teens. The organization found that a whopping 95 percent of them use YouTube, while 19 percent are on the platform “almost constantly.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, two-thirds (67 percent) said they used TikTok, with 16 percent claiming they are on the app “almost constantly.” The third most-popular social media platform among teens is Instagram, per Pew, with 62 percent using it. A tenth say they use it almost all the time — despite the app occasionally telling them to take a break. A previous poll conducted in 2014-15 found that 52 percent were using Instagram (Pew didn’t ask about YouTube usage for that survey and TikTok didn’t exist at the time).
Snapchat also rose among teens, with 59 percent using it in 2022, compared with 41 percent in the previous poll. Facebook was the top social media app among teens seven years ago, with 71 percent of them using it, but that figure has dropped to 32 percent. Teen adoption of Twitter (down from 33 percent to 23 percent) and Tumblr (14 percent to five percent) has fallen over the same period too.
The 2014-15 poll didn’t ask about Twitch, WhatsApp or Reddit. These days, a fifth of teens use Twitch, 17 percent are on WhatsApp and 14 percent are accessing Reddit. For what it’s worth, the earlier poll suggested 33 percent of teens used Google+, while a quarter used Vine. This time around, Pew did not ask teens about their use of Discord or social gaming spaces such as Fortnite.
Pew surveyed 1,316 teens aged 13 to 17 (as well as one of their parents) in April and May. It found that boys were more likely to use YouTube, Twitch and Reddit and girls were more likely to say they access TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. More Black and Hispanic teens said they used TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp than white teens.
Even though over half (54 percent) of teens said they’d find it hard to give up social media, 36 percent admitted they spent too much time on the platforms. Around 55 percent said their usage levels were “about right.” Meanwhile, 97 percent of teens now use the internet every day, with 46 percent saying they’re online almost all the time.
The poll found that 95 percent of teens have access to a smartphone (up from 73 percent in 2014-15), while 90 percent can access a desktop or laptop computer, up from 87 percent in the previous survey. Curiously, the percentage of teens who say they have access to a gaming console has fallen slightly, from 81 percent to 80 percent.
