Aldi takes tenth of UK’s food shop spend as Brits try to cut soaring bills with discount supermarket
ONE pound in every ten of grocery shopping is now spent at Aldi, as the discount supermarket wins over those trying to cut their soaring food bills.
The chain, which sells its own versions of well-known brands and fresh food, hit a record-high market share of ten per cent in March, industry analysts Kantar found.

Aldi has been a growing threat to the traditional supermarkets and overtook Morrisons to become the UK’s fourth-largest grocer last year.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s have both recently felt the need to launch “Aldi Price Match” promotions.
Aldi CEO Giles Hurley said: “Shoppers are voting with their feet by switching from more expensive supermarkets to Aldi. As we hit this new market-share milestone, our commitment to offering the lowest grocery prices in Britain is stronger than ever.”
The German discount chain has quadrupled its market share over the past 14 years and doubled its store numbers to 990 shops.
It aims to expand to more than 1,000 stores and is creating 6,000 jobs this year at a time when rivals cut jobs.
Shoppers are being more savvy in the face of 45-year-high inflation.
Food bills are 17.3 per cent higher than they were a year ago but the rate of price increases is down slightly from 17.5 per cent in March, Kantar data showed.
Fraser McKevitt at Kantar said it was “too early to call” whether food inflation would continue to fall, adding: “It’s important to remember, of course, that falling grocery inflation doesn’t mean lower prices, it just means they aren’t increasing as quickly.”
Trouble at TRG
AN activist investor is urging shareholders to vote against the “disproportionate” pay of the Frankie & Benny’s restaurant chain’s boss.
Hong Kong-based Oasis Management, which owns a 12.3 per cent stake in The Restaurant Group (TRG), said the firm’s pay policy “fails to deliver value”.
TRG is run by Andy Hornby, CEO at HBOS before its failure in the 2008 banking crisis.
Oasis says Hornby’s salary of £658,000 is higher than can be justified for a company valued at £225million — particularly as it lost 75 per cent of its value in the past year.
Sing when you’re skimming
BIG food firms yesterday admitted they have been heaping pressure on hard-pressed shoppers by hiking prices to protect profit margins.
Kit-Kat maker Nestle revealed it had increased its profit margins to 17 per cent by raising prices 9 per cent over the past three months — higher than its 15 per cent margin pre-pandemic.
Nestle have put up the price of Felix cat food, advertised by Robbie Williams, by 12.2%[/caption]
The Swiss food giant, which also makes Felix cat food, recent ads for which have featured Robbie Williams, said its pet food prices jumped 12.2 per cent.
Pepsico said its sale growth of 14 per cent also came from price hikes, having sold 3 per cent fewer drinks.
McDonald’s said menu price rises in February — such as its Mayo Chicken going from 90p to £1.19 — fuelled a 12.6 per cent sales increase.
Ocado job axe
ONLINE grocer and tech firm Ocado is putting 2,300 jobs at risk by closing its oldest robotic warehouse, as newer alternatives are more efficient.
A site will open in Luton, Beds, to replace the outdated hub in Hatfield, Herts.
Ocado is also slowing down plans for further warehouses after a fall in online grocery sales since lockdown ended.
Ocado, which owns half its retail arm in partnership with Marks & Spencer, is licensing its robot-picking and logistics software to overseas retailers to boost its reserves.
Its shares have halved in value over the past year.
Natwest chief to depart
NATWEST chairman Sir Howard Davies yesterday announced he would step down next year, adding the search for his replacement will begin soon.
The bank’s shares are down by a fifth since he become chairman in 2015.
He said: “One would have hoped the share price would have been stronger, but that’s the way banks are valued at the moment.”
Sir Howard added NatWest had a “robust and resilient balance sheet” as he distanced it from the recent turmoil at Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse, which sparked financial sector jitters.
He said: “Ultimately, poor risk management and long-standing, idiosyncratic challenges were largely to blame for those failures.”
PRE-PAYMENT meter customers have not claimed £160million of help on offer.
The Energy Bills Support Scheme sent £780million of vouchers to low-income homes entitling them to £400 discounts on energy bills but only £620million has been redeemed.
Primark goes for growth
PRIMARK is forging ahead with expansion plans.
The retail giant is rolling out its click-and-collect online ordering service to 32 London stores this summer as it dips its toes into the digital age.

And it is opening its first store in Texas, becoming one of Britain’s best fashion exports.
CEO George Weston said: “In cash-constrained times, we do well because we sell to a wide demographic.”
He added that the retailer had been helped by Government energy support, which put more cash in shoppers’ pockets.
Primark has also been boosted by selling more expensive premium ranges to lure middle-class shoppers on a budget.
These include £20 dresses and £40 trench coats.
Mr Weston said Primark would hold off raising prices again this year, as the costs of cotton, polyester and shipping are expected to come down.
Cheated by firms
UK firms are short-changing more than a million workers by a total of £255million by flouting employment laws.
About 900,000 staff do not get the holiday pay they are due, while 400,000 are paid below the minimum wage, says the Resolution Foundation.
The think-tank said 14 per cent of the lowest-paid get no paid holiday at all.
It has called on enforcement agencies to be given more powers to tackle breaches.
Fast X: Everything We Know About The Tenth Fast & Furious Movie
After more than two decades’ worth of increasingly fast and more furious movies, the Fast and the Furious main series is finally drawing to a close. Fast X, which hits theaters early next year, is the first of a Harry Potter-style two-part finale that will presumably wrap up the story of Dominic Toretto and his #family. And with an unbelievably stacked cast, the tenth main entry in this series is looking like it’ll be one of the most expensive movies ever made.
The story of how this franchise became the sort of thing that could warrant a budget like that is about as ludicrous as the car stunts the series is famous for. Beginning with a first film that felt rooted firmly in the mid-90s when it came out in 2001, and then bringing out a sequel without Vin Diesel, and then dropping a box office bomb of a third film that had no connection at all to the other to beyond a final scene that plays like a Marvel post-credits scene today.
Somehow, despite even Vin Diesel not really being that interested in keeping it going, director Justin Lin somehow managed to reunite Dom and Brian and usher in the era of The Fast and the Furious.
But all things eventually come to an end, and after two decades none of the old hats is young and spry anymore. And so it’s time for a two-part finale that begins with Fast X.
When is Fast X coming out?
Fast X is scheduled to hit movie theaters just a few short months from now, on May 19, 2023, with the eleventh and final film planned for February of 2024.
Who’s directing?
Vin Diesel will once again lead this gargantuan ensemble cast, with most everybody who survived F9 returning. Aside from Diesel, you can expect old timers Michelle Rodriguez as Letty, Tyrese Gibson as Roman, Ludacris as Tej, Jordana Brewster as Mia, and Sung Kang as Han to all show up. More recent additions to the #family, like Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey, John Cena’s Dom’s brother Jakob, Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw, Helen Mirren as Mama Shaw, Michael Rooker as Buddy, and Scott Eastwoord as Little Nobody, will also appear.
And apparently Cardi B will reprise her cameo role from F9, if that was a thing you were worried about or remembered happening.
Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody and Luke Evans’s Owen Shaw aren’t expected to pop up, but you never know with these things.
On the villainous side, Charlize Theron’s Cipher will return. Again.
Is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson going to be in it?
No
Who’s joining the family?
Vin Diesel’s Instagram
There are two big names joining the main cast of Fast X: Brie Larson and Jason Momoa. Momoa will play a new villain named Dante who works with Cipher. Larson’s character is named Tess, but we don’t know anything beyond that.
Rita Morena, one of only a few actors who have ever pulled off the EGOT (winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar AND Tony awards), will also be joining the cast as the Toretto matriarch. And, in case you weren’t hyped up enough about this cast, we’ve also got Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher 2 from The Suicide Squad) and Alan Ritchson (Jack Reacher in the excellent recent Amazon series) joining up in unspecified roles.
It’s probably safe to bet that, if Fast X is a disappointment, it’s not gonna be because of this cast.
Who’s directing?
Franchise stalwart Justin Lin deserves as much credit as anyone for the Fast franchise’s success after he directed three films (Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6) that turned the series into a big deal. But after he returned to the series for F9, he and Diesel reportedly clashed so hard on Fast X that Lin quit the job just a week into filming. “This movie is not worth my mental health,” he is reported to have shouted after one fight with Diesel.
Lin was replaced by action director Louis Leterrier, known for directing Transporter 2, The Incredible Hulk, and all ten episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. As a last second quick fix replacement, you could do a lot worse than Leterrier, who has plenty of action movie cred.
What kind of cool and exciting locations will Fast X go to?
Surprising probably no one, at least part of the film will take place in Los Angeles, the city the Toretto family calls home. So we should once again get some time with the Toretto house in Angelino Heights that was rebuilt after it got blown up in Furious 7.
Beyond that, we can expect the usual globe-trotting action, this time centered on Europe. Fast X filmed in and around two different cities in Italy–Rome and Turin–and the production also spent time in Lisbon and London. Though London might not be a major location in the film, since they were shooting on Warner Bros’ studio lot in Leavesden–meaning they were probably shooting on sound stages and backlots that will represent other places.
Will they return to outer space, though? That’s
What’s gonna happen in Fast X?
We don’t have any kind of plot summary yet, nor have we seen a trailer. So we don’t know a whole lot. At the end of F9, we had Charlize Theron’s Cipher on the loose once more and John Cena’s Jakob abandoning his bad guy ways to join his secret brother Dom in the #family. And Dom has unfinished business with Cipher, who killed Elena in The Fate of the Furious.
With Fast X (supposedly) representing the beginning of the end for the main series, it’s very likely that Cipher will once more take center stage as a Big Bad, teaming up this time with Jason Momoa’s Dante, a new character. And with Rita Moreno popping in as Grandma Toretto, it’s safe to say we’re going to once again delve deeply into the Toretto family backstory. Hope you’re excited for more flashbacks!
