If you’ve ever had the jarring experience of stumbling upon one of the most robust factions of Twitters, a.k.a. film Twitter, the latest trending randomizer may resonate with you.
The film Twitter take generator parrots a certain kind of internet discourse where director’s names are buzzwords and debates about the Marvel Cinematic Universe are seemingly always trending. If you’re looking for a hot take, this generator will satiate that need.
What started as a way to poke fun at ChatGPT and AI text generators became a reality thanks to Twitter user @garaboldin. Last night, @standardspeeds tweeted, “I used Chat GTP [sic] and AI to come up with this hot take for film twitter, potentially saving hours of time: James Gray is mid.” Fellow Twitter user @garaboldin took an old-school generator with stock phrases and variables on perchance.org and formatted it to spit out common film Twitter takes, highly discussed movies, and directors.
The result is scarily accurate.
“I just winged it…throwing in whatever sounds overly confident and variables that would make it sound extremely stupid,” @garaboldin told Mashable over DM, which is also an apt description of most of the discourse on film Twitter.
The film Twitter take generator is funnier than any ChatGPT nonsense I’ve seen — and that has a lot to do with the fact that it has nothing to do with AI. All it takes to have an awesome generator is someone with a vast knowledge of the subject matter. It also has the added benefit of being divorced from all the ethical questions surrounding AI.
“The more variables [means] the harder it is to make something sound plausible, but it also makes it more satisfying,” continued @garaboldin. “Some sentences are just ‘this movie is good,’ but others have a movie, director, group of people, and an adjective which is how you get ‘French people will not stop paying for The Nightmare on Elm Street while letting The Dark Knight fail.”
Here are some of the most entertaining generated takes that are so real you’d wouldn’t think twice if they popped up on your timeline. Be warned: Film Twitter is getting self-referential.
Play around with the generator yourself here.
