I bought THREE houses for just £2.60 in Italy… they’ll be totally unrecognisable once I’m done with them
A WOMAN who bought three homes for just £2.60 in Italy has revealed new plans she has for the properties.
Rubia Daniels intends to retire in picturesque Mussomeli, Sicily, where her houses are – but has now revealed she plans to create two businesses in the buildings.
The enthusiastic new home owner from California, who speaks Italian, first became aware of the 89p (€1) homes after reading an article about the small town online.
While she hadn’t intended to buy so many homes in 2019, she added: “It’s how the people make you feel that makes you say, ok, I’ll buy three.”
The properties are only a ten minute drive from one another.
She plans on turning one into a wellness centre.
The other will be an art gallery, and the third is reserved for her and her boyfriend to retire in after the massive £16,000 renovations.
She said: “You don’t even get a car for £16k in California, it’s a very small investment.
“We have one mostly completed already when we go, and hopefully the second will be done by October.
“I never felt overwhelmed or fearful about this project – it’s a big task but a great opportunity.”
Rubia plans to restore all three buildings to their former glory, and help restart the small town in which they lie.
She said: “It was a fantastic new concept for me.
“I work in the environmental industry and to use what we already have where properties have been abandoned – it’s a great opportunity.”
Several towns in Italy have made headlines in recent years for offering up the practically free houses to buyers.
The Sun previously reported that there are around 25 regions who have taken part in the scheme, each with a number of properties.
Many of the areas have a dwindling or aging population and hope to build the community again.
But while some do sell for 89p (€1), on average houses sell for around £4.4,000 (€5,000), although some are up to £17,000 (€20,000), according to Meredith Tabbone who bought one herself.
Not only that, but there are often fines for buyers who don’t complete their renovations in time.
Buyers are also often required to pay a £4.4,000 (€5,000) deposit, which they lose if they haven’t finished sprucing up their property within a set time.
Buyers are also advised to check on whether they are required to live in the property full time before buying, as some towns sell the houses on the condition of moving to the area, as well as working or starting a business there.
Dias claims that she ultimately “loves the architecture of the house and the history” of the old building, despite the pricey cost of the renovation.
Here is everything you need to know about buying and renovating an 89p (€1) house in Italy.

Nicola Bulley: Councillors receive ‘vile’ telephone calls over missing mum & cops say they’ll investigate
COUNCILLORS of Nicola Bulley’s home town have received vile calls over the missing mum.
All members of the parish council were said to have been bombed with late-night “mystery phone calls” following the disappearance of the mum-of-two.

One council member in particular, who lives nearby, was said to have been left an ‘offensive’ voicemail[/caption]
One caller left an “offensive” voicemail message referencing Nicola – which police are now investigating.
A source close to the Inskip with Sowerby Parish Council revealed the “mystery” calls came in to all six members between 12.45am and 3am on Saturday.
They said all but one rang off as the Lancashire councillors picked up.
A council source said the caller did mention Nicola – but they would not give any more details on what was said.
They said: “I believe the police have identified the offender.”
When asked if the councillor who was left the voicemail was rattled by the message, they said: “No, we’re not soft.”
However, all councillors’ numbers have now been pulled from the website.
Wyre Borough Council leader councillor Michael Vincent said members understood “the emotional gravity of” the 45-year-old’s disappearance.
But, he added: “We will not tolerate any form of abuse of any of our Elected Members of Wyre Borough Council or any of the town and parish councils within our borders or our staff.”
Michael continued: “It is a shame that we have had to take this step at such a difficult time and appropriate steps are being taken to ensure that residents are still able to contact their elected representatives.”
Lancashire Police confirmed it had been made aware of the phone calls, and said “it is being looked into”.
The search for Nicola is today entering its 20th day.
Police were seen scouring a caravan site on Sunday just yards from where the mum disappeared on January 27.
Officers were also compiling a list of all registered sex offenders in the area as is protocol, according to a former Scotland Yard detective.
Prior to that it was revealed police were looking into two men trying to hide their faces near Nicola’s dog-walking route the day before she went missing.
Cops have been standing by their “main working hypothesis” that the mum fell into the river but said they were keeping an “open mind”.
But Nicola’s partner Paul Ansell said in recent days that he is “100 per cent” convinced the mother of his children is not in the river.
The dad-of-two revealed he thought a local was behind the disappearance.

From 9am today, four variations of the special 50p coin are on sale, with the starting at £11 for a brilliant uncirculated version.
The prices then range up to £1,195 for a gold proof coin.
There are several different types of coins you can buy from the Royal Mint.
Circulated coins are the ones you’ll see in your shop change.
Brilliant uncirculated coins are of a higher standard than circulating and bullion coins.
The machines used to strike these coins are polished and finished by hand.
Proof coins are the highest quality coins produced by the Royal Mint and are all hand-finished.
Bullion coins are made from gold and silver and are usually used as an investment that aims to retain a certain value over time.
Some coins in the Harry Potter range also feature an enchanting “latent feature”, which rotates in the light to reveal a lightning bolt and the number 25, marking the anniversary year.
Nicola Howell, chief commercial officer at The Royal Mint, said: “As the official maker of UK coins, we are delighted to make a spellbinding coin collection to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
“The collection is expected to be in high demand, as it is amongst a small amount which will see a portrait change during the series.”
Jim Kay, illustrator and designer of the Harry Potter coin collection commented on producing the coin design: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet.
“It is the same for most aspects of publishing – because you are on your own all of the time in a studio, none of it quite seems real until you see the book on a shelf in a shop.”
The coin series has been created in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing, The Blair Partnership and Warner Bros, Consumer Products.
The first coin in the collection celebrating Harry Potter is available to purchase from The Royal Mint’s website.
