Kate Garraway returns to host GMB today after star bravely opened up about Derek Draper’s final days

Kate will be back on Good Morning Britain on Monday just three days after her beloved Derek Draper‘s funeral.
The brave widow previously revealed she will return to our screens following the tragedy because “life has to start” again.
Holding back tears she said: “I don’t know how it’s going to be. Grief isn’t containable in a day or year.
“People ask why I’m going back to work. Life has to start. We have to pick ourselves up and go on.
“That’s what Derek would want me to do. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”
She also revealed that son Billy was heading back to school.
“We have to pick ourselves up, that’s what Derek did and would want us to do”, she added.
“Grieving will continue. We’re in the foothills. Anyone who’s been through it will know. There’s a long way to go.”
Kate was last seen on GMB on December 8 before taking a break to look after Derek following his deterioration.
He sadly died less than a month later on January 3.
Talking about Derek’s four-year battle, Kate said it was important that he didn’t feel like he was letting his family down.
She said: “Derek’s spirit and fight to keep going, and the children, have been extraordinary throughout.
“It feels like five years and two minutes since Derek was in a positive place before the cardiac arrest which took him from us.
“It was the furthest from the spectre of death we could have been.
“It was a challenge to make sure he knew that he wasn’t letting us down because he couldn’t get through this last one.
“They were so beautiful, the children about that.
“Darcey said ‘If you can’t do this it’s okay, don’t worry about us. We will be OK. Don’t worry about mum. We will be fine. You don’t have to worry about looking after us all. You will live on through us’.
Last week, Kate said goodbye to Derek at his star-studded funeral.
The funeral of Derek Draper, which was attended by figures including former prime minister Sir Tony Blair, musician Sir Elton John and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, was held on Friday at the Church of St Mary The Virgin in Primrose Hill, north-west London.
It comes as…
- Kate revealed she held her husband’s hand as he died
- Derek’s last photo shows him at pal Peter Mandeson’s wedding
- Kate’s co-stars including Susanna Reid have led tributes to the dad-of-two
- Derek’s health battles revealed after he suffered heart attack before Christmas
- ITV bosses will give Kate ‘as much time off as she needs’
Former political lobbyist-turned-psychologist Draper married the GMB presenter at the same church in September 2005.
Draper fell seriously ill during the early part of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 and spent 13 months in hospital before he was discharged.
He died on January 3 aged 56 after suffering long-lasting symptoms from coronavirus.
Despite being scheduled to return full-time, ITV have offered their full support and said she can take time off as and when.
Heartbroken Kate has told pals she is keen to keep busy and get stuck into work as she continues to mourn Derek.
Mum-of-two Kate has also told bosses at Smooth FM she is keen to host her popular morning radio show there as well.
A source said: “Kate has had an incredibly rough past couple of months, and it has taken its toll mentally and physically.
“But she is a workhorse, and journalism, being on live TV, runs through her blood — it’s what she knows and loves.
“Kate is keen to keep busy and get stuck back into work.”

Asda makes big change in stores today to help with high cost of living – and shoppers praise ‘excellent initiative’
ASDA has made a big change in stores today to help shoppers with the cost of living – and they’re delighted.
The supermarket is offering all its customers a free bowl of porridge and a hot drink every day from now until March 20.
It will be available from 8am to 12pm in all 205 Asda cafes.
Thee is no eligibility criteria and all you need to do is ask for the deal at the counter.
You can find your nearest branch by using the store locator tool on Asda’s website.
Shoppers have taken to social media to praise the initiative, which is being run in partnership with Quaker.
Writing on Facebook, one shopper said: “Well done Asda. It’s a great idea. A lot of people will be very grateful.”
Another added: “What a great idea, lovely for youngsters to have a warm breakfast.”
A third wrote: “Well done Asda for looking after your community and customers.”
It’s not the first time that Asda has offered a deal to help customers struggling with the soaring cost of living.
Shoppers aged 60 and over can also get hot soup and a roll with unlimited tea and coffee for £1, from today till the end of the month.
Asda has also made its Kids Eat for £1 meal deal permanent across all cafes as well.
Baby food is also available as part of the initiative, with little ones able to get a free pouch of Ella’s Kitchen baby food in their local Asda café.
Selected Asda stores also run a ‘Community Cuppa’ campaign in cafes.
It’s aimed at community groups who may otherwise struggle to meet due to rental costs or high energy costs.
Spaces are available on weekdays from 2pm to 6pm and all community group members who visit get a free hot drink.
Asda isn’t the only supermarket to step up to help pensioners in the cost of living crisis.
A child under 16 can eat for free at Morrisons cafés when you buy an adult meal worth at least £4.99.
A kid’s meal comes with a piece of fruit and Tropicana kid’s orange juice, apple drink, or bottle of water. Morrisons is rolling out the scheme nationwide.
