Labour accuse Tories of spending sprees on hotels, dining and gifts
Union militants’ main aim is to upend the Tories and even our entire economic system
Train wreckers
WE have to hand it to the union militants.
They aimed to inflict as much reckless damage on the economy as they could — and statistics show they managed it.

They downed tools in December, hammering other people’s jobs and businesses, and our GDP shrank 0.5 per cent.
Not quite enough for the recession the brothers would love to have gifted the Tory Government they despise. But close.
The Office for National Statistics puts much of the blame for this grim figure on the mass strikes in the public sector and at Royal Mail.
That lower GDP means less revenue for the Treasury and less money available for the already unaffordable pay rises the unions are demanding.
Except that’s not their only motive.
The main aim is to upend the Tories — and even our entire economic system.
Think we’re exaggerating?
A leaked RMT memo shows chief Mick Lynch being lobbied by officials “to work for the suppression of the capitalist system by a socialistic order of society”.
As if the Marxist meathead needed reminding.
He and his hard-Left mates are as ideological as Arthur Scargill and equally delusional too.
So far Rishi Sunak has rightly shown them some unbending Thatcherite steel.
Jeremy Hunt insists our economy is resilient.
He and his boss must be too.
Safety first
WE always opposed cuts to defence.
But we get why they happened.
After the Cold War it wasn’t the highest priority.
And with money always tight following the financial crash of 2008, the NHS and schools came first.
But with his invasion of Crimea, the Salisbury poisonings and finally his monstrous war on Ukraine, Putin has provided a hideous wake-up call.
So Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is right to urge the PM to put billions more into our forces, as Boris Johnson did.
It’s not about votes in 2024.
It’s simply about keeping our country safe from murderous tyrannies.
Boat race
STOPPING the small boats ferrying illegal migrants to Britain will take bottle in No10.
It will mean facing down a cacophony of abuse from the Left.
Especially if, long-term, we opt to leave the European Convention on Human Rights.
But there’s a shorter-term solution: A watertight new law barring illegal arrivals from using the Human Rights or Modern Slavery Acts to wangle a stay they are not entitled to.
Then, crucially, ignoring disobliging rulings from the ECHR — as we did for years after it demanded we give prisoners the vote.
Two top lawyers say this is vital to establish a deterrent and avoid new lawsuits designed to thwart deportations.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman must take heed.
The Tories must win this fight.

There’s no sugar-coating the Nadhim Zahawi calamity for the Tories – it’s right that he’s gone
Taxy for Zahawi
THERE is no sugar-coating the Nadhim Zahawi calamity for the Tories.
Last year, already engulfed by multiple scandals, they appointed a Chancellor who turned out to be one of Britain’s biggest tax avoiders.
That said, the blame lies with Zahawi.
He kept his Inland Revenue difficulty from three successive Prime Ministers even as they handed him Cabinet jobs.
He failed to mention it in any declaration of interests, used lawyers to try to deter those investigating it and wrongly branded resulting news stories “smears”.
His resignation letter took another undignified swipe at the Press, which was just doing its job.
It was The Sun which revealed he had paid a tax penalty.
It is odd No10 never interrogated HMRC about the extent of Zahawi’s problems.
But we don’t blame Rishi Sunak for leaving the ultimate judgement to his ethics advisor.
That is why Laurie Magnus was hired — even if Labour prefers instant justice without trial for Tories.
Once the verdict was in, the PM acted immediately.
It is a sad end for Zahawi.
Plenty of people owe their lives to his effectiveness in overseeing the Covid jabs programme, even if they will never know it.
He is a popular MP too.
But this was a disaster entirely of his own making, which he handed abysmally. It is right he has gone.
Silly suds
THE campaign to rehabilitate Prince Andrew is mind-bogglingly tone-deaf.
The disgraced Duke has already paid Virginia Giuffre millions to keep quiet — an unusual strategy for a supposedly innocent man falsely accused of career-ending wrongdoing by a fantasist.
Now, though, after his absurd alibis involving sweat and a particularly memorable pizza, comes the maddest yet.
His chum Ian Maxwell may look at two masked adults sitting in a bath and conclude that it is physically impossible for them to frolic sexually therein . . . but millions may beg to differ.
Indeed they may marvel at the paucity of Mr Maxwell’s imagination.
Now consider today’s evidence that the infamous photo of Andrew and Virginia is genuine, not the fake Ghislaine Maxwell now claims, and this desperate PR drive looks ever more unhinged.
Andrew always inhabited a different planet.
His friends plainly do too.
Enough. Have a little respect for the public. Stop insulting their intelligence.
Cheats clamp
THE well-meaning Modern Slavery Act has been a Trojan Horse for foreign criminals aiming to cheat their way to a life in Britain.
Offenders arriving on small boats routinely claim to be trafficked victims. So we welcome the crackdown tomorrow.
It’s not THE solution to this crisis. But it’s a start.

Boris Johnson calls on Tories to unite to beat ‘snoozefest’ Sir Keir Starmer
BORIS Johnson last night called on the Tories to unite to beat snoozefest Sir Keir Starmer and make an almighty political comeback.
The former PM unveiled a portrait of himself at the Carlton Club last night.

And he predicted that inflation would fall and evil Putin would fail to win in Ukraine.
The ousted premier called on Tory MPs to back the government but pointedly failed to mention his successor but one, Rishi Sunak.
He told members at the posh Tory club that people would realise only the Conservatives could tackle small boats, take on the unions, cut taxes and give Brits the chance to own their own home.
He predicted: “At this dawn of this bright new year I make some confident predictions: Putin will lose in Ukraine.
“And the Conservative Party will recover.”
He stressed that the Tory party could still “win again” despite falling so far behind in the polls.
He vowed: “There is only one party that really believes in Brexit – and it’s potential to transform the economy of this country…
“And when people realise this – I think the political dynamic is going to change…
“There is no desire to vote for Keir Starmer, for Sir crasheroonie snoozefest…
“So never give in, keep fighting, keep backing the government – keep making the case for levelling up, for opportunities and for a dynamic low tax global Britain.
“That is how we will win again.”
