Before 2022, Bobb Matthews might have been an ascending star, but he could never quite break through on a sanctioned lifting platform. Aside from some solid podium finishes, he was awaiting his turn to shine in the spotlight. In what was likely his last competitive appearance of the 2022 calendar year, Matthews came, saw, and conquered. On Dec….

It’s been an eventful fall for strength sports living legend Hafthor Björnsson. After some years away from Atlas stones and other heavy implements, the Icelandic athlete had announced he’d be making an eventual strongman comeback. First on his agenda, though, was a foray back into powerlifting, an effort he seems to have maximized. On Dec. 3, 2022, Björnsson…

Airbnb will soon show you the actual total price you’ll have to pay when you search for a rental on the platform. Imagine that — no more surprise high-priced cleaning fees snuck in at checkout.
Users have long complained about fees hidden from search. As it stands, Airbnb prioritizes the nightly rate, which doesn’t include fees that get tacked on later. Most notably among those fees: the dreaded “cleaning fee” a host asks for, despite them often requiring the vacationer to do a suspicious amount of cleaning. Why pay a cleaning fee and then also have to wash sheets? Those fees used to pop-up only after the user got past the search process.
Airbnb said that come December, when you search, you’ll be shown the actual total price before taxes.
The company wrote in a press release:
Starting in December, we will begin rolling out the option to display total price in countries without existing price display requirements. Total price will include all fees before taxes and be shown in search results, as well as on the map, filter, and listing page. Before confirming their booking, guests can still view a full price breakdown that shows Airbnb’s service fee, discounts, and taxes.
Airbnb also noted that guest would no longer be subjected to undue cleaning requirements. I guess Airbnb has been seeing the tweets and memes.
“Guests should not have to do unreasonable checkout tasks such as stripping the beds, doing the laundry, or vacuuming when leaving their Airbnb,” the company wrote in its press release. “But we think it’s reasonable to ask guests to turn off the lights, throw food in the trash, and lock the doors — just like they would when leaving their own home.”
So go ahead and look for your perfect getaway on Airbnb. Finally you’ll be greeted with what you’ll actually have to fork over.
A full price breakdown of Airbnb’s service fees, discounts, and taxes will also be made available, and the total price of accommodation will be prioritized over nightly rates in the Airbnb search algorithm. “The highest quality homes with the best total prices will rank higher in search results,” says Chesky. “We started as an affordable alternative to hotels, and affordability is especially important today. During this difficult economic time, we need to help our Hosts provide great value to you.” […] The transparent pricing toggle is set to roll out sometime in December, alongside new pricing and discount tools for hosts to allow for more competitive rates. In other Airbnb-related news, the European Commission said Airbnb, along with other short-term home rental companies, will have to share data on the number of people using their platforms under proposed EU rules. “The new proposed rules will help to improve transparency on the identification and activity of short-term accommodation hosts, and on the rules they have to comply with, and will facilitate the registration of hosts,” the Commission said in a statement.
“They will also tackle the current fragmentation in how online platforms share data and, ultimately, help prevent illegal listings. Overall, this will contribute to a more sustainable tourism ecosystem and support its digital transition,” it said.
